Not true, signings of equal value cancel each other out, so last year the Pats would have gotten a 3rd round pick for Logan Ryan, but they signed Gilmore for more money, so that cancelled that pick out.

Unless the Pats sign a couple of guys for $15 million a year, the two 3rd round picks for Solder and Butler are going to be there, the other two could possibly get cancelled out if the Pats sign some guys in the 5-6 million a year range.

I think you're misunderstanding his point. Yes, signings of equal value cancel each other out (see his first post). However, by definition a qualifying signing MUST offset a qualifying loss. So if you sign 4 qualifying guys, each at $3M per year, if the Patriots only lose 4 qualifying guys (Solder, Butler, Amendola, Lewis), despite their much higher salaries, they would all be cancelled out. In that scenario, *if* there are any leftover comp picks beyond the first 32, the Patriots would likely be eligible for one 7th round "value" comp pick.

So they've got to be careful. If they're going to sign someone to offset the likely 3rds that Solder and Butler provide, that person better damn well be worth it....

Short version: the Pats can sign any two qualifying UFAs to contracts less than ~$10M/year without risking the comp 3s. [Note that players released by their teams, such as Suh, don't qualify, nor does anyone released after today.]

Note: I was wrong about the rule for picks canceling out. They cancel out within a round first, and then follow the downward rule. The cutoff for 3rd rounders is somewhere around $10M, so anything over that amount would likely cost the Pats one of their 3s. A player less than that would cancel out Amendola or Lewis.
