With up to 4 comp picks projected for BB and a bunch next year w/ all of the pending FA's .. I could see BB targeting teams in trades similar to what he's done the last couple of years and getting quality players at a discount. (Think Kyle Van Noy, Josh Gordon, Danny Shelton etc)

This might be a new draft strategy. Where BB loads up on picks to trade for younger players in the league that haven't fully developed and continue to roll them over year after year. Instead of taking all of his picks.

The next question would be.. Who would be those types of players entering their 4th or 5th year of their rookie deals?

Interesting. Use the earlier picks for guys that have been in the league for a while (whom he might've picked but missed out on), and use late picks and UDFAs to stock the team with depth and special teams. I think one of key losses besides Edelman and Hightower in 2017, was the extremely underrated Jonathon Jones, who's a great special teams player, and was playing well as a slot CB in 2016. On the trade front, Van Noy has turned into an invaluable player, and a Pro Bowl level player. That was a GREAT trade.

Edit: I forgot to say, Great thread by the way, I think you might have really might have touched on something that definitely seems to be Belichick's thought process. Great job.

Well according to Lombardi Michael Belichick targets first year head coaches so I would look at Kingsbury Cardinals
    Taylor Bengals
    Packers
These will be some of the rosters BB will slice thru like a cheetah taking the tripping gazelle.

I don't believe BB has a "fixed strategy" per se....it is just us looking under all rocks for value anywhere.

Historically, we never get much from rookies....Michel is the only rookie that has really contributed right off the bat in YEARS...or at least that I can remember.

And we are almost definitely loading up on receivers again....and rookie receivers just don't contribute right off the bat...so I think we go the veteran route there (e.g. Golden Tate).....any young receivers in years 4/5 that have underachieved?

Lombardi said BB targets rosters of new coaches and GMs because they typically haven't evaluated how to best use players or want their own guys so they are quicker to deal misused or untapped talent

Yup, it's why I asked if there are any 3rd/4th/5th year receivers still on their rookie contracts on those teams with new HC's?

Can't think of any right off the top of my head.....

Christ, he's one of the few draft choices that hasn't gone right to IR before the season starts.

God bless BB's choices in UFDAs. They seem to not get injured.

The trouble with many of BB's deals is that they are for players in the last year of
their deals. One year and gone.

I don't think they would trade him unfortunately but I wouldn't hesitate to give a second.

Exactly right. New coaches and GMs want their own schemes and players that fit their schemes.

BB sees that as a great opportunity to acquire a talented player at a discount

Helps on the comp pick front, though. They could turn the 2018 95th pick into one absurdly cheap year of Brown, the 2018 143rd pick, and a 2020 pick around 100th overall.

Great point. He would target guys who don't fit the new scheme like a Vinny Curry example down in TB.

    DEN | MIA | CIN | ARI

I would say that he always looks for market inefficiencies first and foremost.

    Stork
    JC Jackson
    Mason
    Malcom Brown
    Ryan
    Collins

    Etc etc

The idea that rookies don’t start or contribute heavily is ridiculous. There’s 1-3 every year. Fewer then on some other teams, and some guys do get worked in slowly, but plenty of them have been 8-16 game starters as rookies or key role players
