2025 Red Sox Thread

This is a very easy one. When the man who pays you 31.5 million per year flies down to KC on a Friday night to ask you to do what's best for the team and not publicly throw the organization under the bus and after that you still give him the finger? A person like that doesn't work for that organization for very long. Tie in the fact that he is out there taking grounders at short stop pre game and you can see how the optics aren't great for the team.

Did the Red Sox handle it perfectly? I don't really know, seemed to be some level of mixed messaging. But still, when I look at a team that has Toro plays third base, then first. Mayer playing 3rd when he had about 10 game there in the minors. Cambell was playing center and second.

Yet doughboy couldn't pick up a glove and take grounders at first just to see, no he takes them at short. Teammates see that and I guarantee it rubs them the wrong way. Thats why he HAD to be gone. The instant he had the press conference in ST and his arrogance about being a team player, I wanted him gone.
My issue is the return, the Red Sox are not as good today as they were yesterday...
They unloaded a boatload of cash, but as a team they have lost a lot of firepower..
He should have moved to first, but for the RS this is not a good move.

I don't think anyone is questioning the why. It's them giving him away.
My belief is there was interest from other teams which offered a better package, but ownership wanted the entire contract off their books (as opposed to a Pork Chop Sandoval situation).

As usual, the priority was financial (as opposed to winning) .

I'm all set with them. I'm good.

They have a ton of position players in the minors right now that are very, very good. Not surprising they got a package of arms, and left arms. They don't have a ton of that in the minors.

It's either money or prospects. They took the money route and SF ate all of it. I'm good with that. It was a mistake to give him 315 million for a guy who is hitting .270 and is now a DH.

And nobody knows if the return sucks or not yet. Arms are like lottery tickets and Bailey knows these guys very well. Extend Bregman, trade for another elite pitcher and extend him. Team will be much better for it.

Yes. Their farm system is flush with top prospects.

What they need now are veterans who can hit, play D, be a positive clubhouse influence.

I really don't like this trade but my hope is that Devers really was a locker room cancer and that this ends up as addition by subtraction. Even with that though they gave up one of the best hitters in baseball and got two JAG pitchers and a prospect.

Didn't see this till 1/2 he ago...
This is wild.

I have to digest this one for a few....

Ok well this sucks (if true). Hope he gets a warm welcome back to Fenway. And by warm I mean Manny or Damon warm.

I am hoping what they have is enough. My hope is Narvaez starts to grow a voice as a leader. He gets fired up for great plays and seems to be building to that. Durran is a vet, as is Refsnyder etc. I do want them to now pivot and trade some pieces for a stud pitcher to match with Crochet. Can you imagine a rotation of Crochet, TBD stud, Bello, Dobbins....man if Bello and Dobbins continue to blossom you are really cooking with fire.

I just got banned from another forum for using this as an example. It's not real I guess, but Jim Murray has said that Devers was upset with Campbell asking to take reps at first base. So Devers is a turd that isn't worth 31 million.

Wonder if his 12 Ks in the first 4 games of the season was on purpose.

Wait until Bregman comes back, has a solid rest of the season and opts-out. Let's hope Mayer can play 3B at least better than Devers. Seems like a given but his value is still as a SS. He has that beautiful swing so he'll hit and hit for power.
Also, by the time Story's contract is up in two more years the Sox have some solid SS's coming up, including a 19 year old (Franklin Arias) playing in High A ball who is a really good prospect. He needs to get stronger but has time to mature physically.
i wonder if Story would be willing to move to 1B?

All this tells me is that he had an issue with management here and how they handled things. A good club works this out. Henry saw an opportunity to not pay a big contract and went for it.

I wouldn't want James Harden on the Celtics, and I'm glad Devers is gone from the Sox. Out of shape, poor attitude, me-first guy.
That's a $240M check written from the bank account of the SF Giants deposited directly into the Sox for other playing signings. I'll take it.
Extend and play the kids. Sign another big pitcher, or trade for the Pirate's ace. That's a team worth rooting for.

Except that's not ever, Ever happening.

Sure it will. Let's see what they end up doing. Remember this GM brought you Crochet, Chapman, Narvaez, Bregman etc. I think thats a pretty good track record and a commitment to winning, would it not be?

Not to mention, there's a huge difference between 35 year old Harden playing basketball who would essentially be a "let's hope this old guy has some gas to make a difference" and 28 year old Devers who was supposed to be our big bat for the next era of the Red Sox.

If this team proved anything, it's that they they are trigger happy at finding ways to cheap out.
