You’re looking at the 2nd time it hits the ground. Watch the GIF again:

- ball hits right hand
- ball hits the ground
I don't see it hitting the ground there, at least not conclusively. I don't think it would be overturned, unless there's a better angle. If it does hit the ground there, you are correct. He definitely should have thrown the challenge flag.

Well, if DC and AVP were much better, we might only notice Mayo on the 4th down calls or hail Mary vs. field goal attempts. And he'd be told how to act by Rothstein on those plays.

I'm not saying we shouldn't get a better HC, because we should. I guess I'm just saying that if you hypothetically wanted to make the CEO head coach structure work, you'd need your coordinators to be performing much better.
I think we are expressing the same take from two different directions: "The coaches aren't very good, but then neither is Mayo." vs. "Mayo isn't very good, but then neither are the coaches." I guess the GM fits in there somewhere too.

Oh, and neither are players, except for couple of them.

Yikes. Still seems like only yesterday we didn't have to worry about any of this. Most weeks the only question was, "Well how are we going to win this game." We kind of did get to taking wins for granted.

Of course, what goes missing from all of this is this:

1. Were these scouts trustworthy when it came to WRs in the past?
2. Was Harry rated higher than the others and slated to go higher by the vast majority of people doing the analysis (again, the answer is YES, Harry wasn't a reach, he was mocked to go at #30 in the mock of mock drafts).
3. Did those scouts also recommend other WRs over Harry? Like any of the 5 WRs who busted between the Harry and the Metcalf pick?

Obviously Belichick blew this, but the context is much wider than what people make it out to be.

Never mind the fact that Deebo is considered a huge albatross of a contract now for a player that can't live up to it, and that AJ Brown didn't sign a second contract with the team that drafted him, and that he was making noise this year of leaving for yet another team.
There was also a report that Caserio, the most important voice other than Belichick, was in favor of Harry. It’s not like he went against a unanimous opinion of everybody below him.

It’s completely believable too, as Caserio drafted basically the same player two years later:

NFL Comparison N'Keal Harry
Outside receiver with excellent size and quality build-up speed to attack the third level. Collins shines with his ability to track the deep ball and land the 50-50 catch. His size, hands and competitive nature give him an advantage on contested catches underneath. He struggles to slip press coverage quickly and has issues ridding himself of coverage unless he's getting vertical.

Turns out that scouting report isn’t a death sentence. Collins is 8th in receiving yards despite playing 4 fewer games than everybody in the top 10. He’s first in yards per game.

That is incorrect. Read the official NFL rulebook, rule 8, section 1, article 3. The ball can shift on contact with the ground as long as the receiver regains control before the balls contacts the ground again. A shift does not automatically mean control has been lost. It would not have been overturned.
We can get overly technical here, but what you're describing is something else, it's the ball moving when it's OFF the ground, not when it's ON.

You know what? They do have a lot in common. Tomlin's demeanor on the sideline, especially earlier in career, does remind one a lot of Mayo. But even then he showed more emotion and engagement than Mayo. And I don't recall his media interactions being so ridiculous.
Yeah. I think he’s the model for what you’re going for with Mayo. And to be fair, Tomlin has done a consistently good job keeping the Steelers pointed in the right direction under some trying circumstances.

I'm digging your new avatar.

Tomlin was a controversial hire because of his lack of experience, but it was still a hell of a lot more than Mayo. He had one of the best DC's in the game in **** LeBeau. He also had experienced OC's in Ken Wisenhut and Bruce Arians to start off with.

Mayo's biggest mistake was promoting Covington.

No, the ball can move in the hand when it contacts the ground. As long as the referee thinks the player maintains control after the movement, it's a catch. Check out the rulebook.

That scouting report was a death sentence for Polk

Some thoughts. Haven't read this thread. So sorry for redundancy.

- I am really enjoying the progression of Drake Maye. I think his ceiling is Josh Allen. I don't know if he will ever get even close to that point. But he is far, far closer to Josh Allen at this point in his career than the actual Josh Allen was two years into his career.
- The Patriots, now that they are officially eliminated, need to take the training wheels off the guy completely. They are still afraid to put the ball in his hands in certain situations and it is hurting them. They are running the ball too much to the team's detriment at times.
- That said. Gibson has been a very good free agent pick up for the Pats. His overall stats aren't all that impressive, but he is a damn effective #2/change of pace RB.
- The Pats need a real X WR. A true #1. Whether it is Tee Higgins or trading for an elite WR in trade (not sure who) or drafting with their first pick. It is really hurting them in the red zone. Other than Hooper and Henry, there is no big body to worry about in those tight spaces to go over a defender for the ball.
- I still cannot get upset about losses this year. Yes, the Pats should probably have won this game and gave it way with stupid mistakes, but all I care about is the progression of Drake Maye. Going 6-11 or 5-12 vs 3-14 or 4-13 isn't going to change anything on this team. It is all about Maye.
- I have seen people on the internet criticize Mayo for not challenging this catch. But it was a pretty clear cut catch. Yes, the ball can hit the ground and move and still be a catch as long as the receiver maintains control of the ball. The receiver had control of the ball all the way through the catch. And the Pats ended up needing all their timeouts in this game. So they couldn't have afforded to lose the challenge.

- I still have a hard time pinning down this defense. They seemed to have played better than the score suggested, but they also caved at all the wrong times. That final Colts drive was a disaster.
- What happened to Kyle Dugger? He has been a shell of himself all year. Was he just a product of schemes under Belichick with Mayo and Steve scheming him up? Is the lack of talent around him hurting him?
- Alex Austin might be a find. I don't think he will ever be a great CB, but for a seventh round pick he is exceeding expectations.

Your second bullit is spot on. They really need to start game planning around Maye. Didn’t Bill say at this point in the season they are no longer rookies.

The same Brass that watched tapes of Tyquan and Pickens and came away thinking Slender man would be the better pro. A couple a reasons why you are not Coaching Today Bill.
Tyquan looked so scrawny and weak. And his game tape even in college looked slower than his actual time. What the hell did we see in him over SEC superstar Pickens?

Wasn’t Tomlin only a positional coach when he was hired by the Steelers? Or am I misremembering?

Yeah, I think maybe Mayo could have succeeded if he had better established coaches in place. Everyone trying to learn their jobs all at the same time was a recipe for disaster.

Most people forget he was a DC for one year in Minnesota. His claim to fame was coaching the DB's in Tampa Bay during their Super Bowl run in 2002 and then got hype as a DC in his only year because of both Kevin and Pat Williams. Teams wouldn't even both running on them.

Just came in to say that I was thrilled to see Alex Austin out there yesterday.

There's your #2 corner opposite Gonzo, right there. All the tools.
Austin did have a good game up until his PI.

Pickens is a fkn Problem Child, while a good player, they are still talking about him being a Punk causing REAL problems.
TAKE a look at his stupid lately.
He's a dumb ****.

He causes problems for Pitt every day

He's angry at the world. He's a fkn Punk.
Of course BB Didn't take him.. even ****yman Tomlin is having trouble with this fkn reject.
You fkn ******s..his guy is a cancer.
