People really seem to dismiss the fact that the top of the first round is where you'll find the premium picks.

This is why Belichick never traded down out of the premium picks. He understood that once you get to the 20s, you're looking at players who have the same grade as the guy at 40.

But that's not true of the guy at 10. He has a better grade than the guy at 20.

Seymour, Warren, Mayo. We didn't have a top 10 draft bust. And until Mac Jones, we didn't have a top 20 bust: Wilfork, Solder, Gonzalez.

I don't agree. There have been plenty of instances elsewhere (You saw the state of the Bear's team yesterday, did you not?) where players bailed on the coach and on the team. Why assume those players did not also want to extend their careers? They presumably felt their interests were ill-served by a lousy team or by incompetent coaching. The Pats players have clearly drawn no such adverse conclusion about their coaches or teammates, based on their continued efforts under that leadership.

Frankly, I might give Maye as much credit as Mayo for this resilience, but that is another matter.

There is an emoji for that, LOL More importantly, the team is suddenly trending towards gelling as cohesive team. That comes down to the players making the commitment to play hard as a unit and a coaches who foster that mindset, or at least don't get in the way. McGinest, Law, Brian Cox and BB set the ball in motion for the first part of the dynasty. It is great to see Maye take charge of the locker room as a 21 year old. If players like Gonzo and Barmore join the players locker room leadership team, Mayo's job gets much easier.

My only fear is that the D responds like they did after the Bengals win - they thought they can just show up and everyone will suck as bad.
It's going to be a completely different deal next week. The Rams aren't great, but Stafford and that coaching staff know a little bit about football (which the Bears don't).
They better be humble and prepared.

But staying healthy, keeping current 5 OL improving, and using Gibson more at RB will be critical.

Maye reminds me of a cross between Josh Allen and Brett Favre. Why Favre? That rare ability and willingness to take chances, sometimes resulting in interceptions, and then come back and shake it off like it never happened. That is very rare.

The Josh Allen comparison is obvious. And BTW, he's def good enough with his feet to call designed runs. He's going to be VERY TOUGH in short yardage situations next year come playoff time. Yes, I expect them to make the playoffs next year.

I don't mind the Favre aspect, in part because Maye seems savvy enough to keep it in check, in part because such QB's are fun to watch, and in part because if a defense has no idea what the hell such a QB might do, that can be an advantage. Such unpredictability can be an advantage in poker, certainly, or in negotiations or conflict both in business and in international affairs. Not to get political, but Trump does this all the time: he likes his adversaries to exhaust themselves in puzzlement as to what the heck he might do. That's how he got the Euro's to pony up more for NATO, and it is why he's bandying about the notion of punitive tariffs, a policy he may or may not actually intend to implement. Annoying, perhaps, but clever too.

Those of you who live in the city will know that such tactics also work in Boston traffic. If they think you're nuts, they give you a wide berth. Ask any cabbie.

He did make a really good effort to try to stay inbounds, he just barely stepped out by like a half inch. He was trying hard not to, I have to respect the awareness and hustle to keep the play alive even when we all figured it was just gonna be a throw-away.

Love the competitive edge going there, but he is gonna find out reaaaaaaaaaally quick that NFL seasons are much longer than college seasons.

Learning to protect yourself is a huge part of any NFL QB's development. It was good to see that Maye seemed to make a conscious effort to reduce the number of runs. There does seem to be some debate about when a slide can create a more dangerous situation, like the play Maye got hit in the head. At one point I heard AVP say that sometimes a headfirst dive is safer than a slide. Regardless, he does need to be more careful before he is injured.

I don't disagree with your point. Making faking a slide or pretending to go out bounds, ala Mahomes, a penalty will go a long way to protecting QB's.

I have not seen it mentioned, but I found it very impressive that the team was able to get 20+ yards downfield and get set to clock it for the FG. I went back and watched it and Boutte caught it at 11 seconds and handed it to the Ref at 8, they clocked it with 1 second left. That is a coaching point the has me cautiously optimistic for Mayo.
