I did anticipate Grissom being added. With experience at DE, LB and ST, he fills in three holes the injury riddled Pats have. Also, when Reedy was first signed, the thinking was that, if he panned out, he would be added to the active roster as soon as he mastered the system. This move, IMHO, points to the playoffs. Reedy is an experienced punt and kickoff returner who can save Amendola and Lewis from being the only options. Also, he adds a layer of depth behind Dola in the slot. This could be especially important if Edelman has trouble next year returning to top form.

Personally, I feel like Reedy actually not being a scout team signing but on the 53 is one of the most surprising personnel moves of the season.

It seems risky to me to add a return specialist towards the final third of the regular season. Yes I know that their role is isolated, yet confidence and not feeling too much pressure "to make a play" seem to be the key ingredients to avoid pulling a Harper which could jeopardize a playoff game (or any game for that matter).

Harper had 19 total punt returns and 0 KRs in three seasons at Cal.

Reedy had 76 KRs in four seasons at Toledo, and 19 PRs in his junior year alone.

I suppose we could go through the play-by-play on Reedy's returns for Tampa this season to see what the score was at the time, and what yard line he was on when he fielded punts and kicks. It seems to me that, since Tampa has been behind a lot in games this season, there have been ample opportunities for Reedy to attempt a "desperation return."

Reedy had 7 FCs versus 14 PRs in nine games, so at least we know he wasn't attempting returns every time.

Side note: Reedy's teammates at Toledo included Kareem Hunt, TE Michael Roberts, LB Jayrone Elliot, RB David Fluellen, DB Junior Sylvestre and a couple other guys who were signed by NFL teams as UDFA, at least. So, the odds are that the Pats had college scouting reports on Reedy going back to 2011.

King for Grissom was pretty obvious.

Didnt see the RJF getting waived and especially Reedy getting promoted. Thought he would be a scout team guy and not a very late season addition as returner.

To me it seemed obvious that BB wanted someone who could take the role of KR and especially PR so that Dola & Lewis had less risk of injury. If he does well, he'll keep that role. If not, expect Dola & Lewis to be back on STs for the playoffs.

Wildcard: emergency in every sense of the word, slot receiver depth

You have great instincts then because I have seen the same script of "interesting" players being signed to the PS to only end up being scout team signings again and again.

I have a feeling that, given the injuries to Trey Flowers and Van Noy, and given the potential suspension of Gronk, the next couple weeks could be fairly active transaction-wise, with possibly several moves between the PS and the active roster.

The PS as of Monday, Dec. 4th (one open spot):

Cody Hollister WR
David Jones SAF
Damarius Travis SAF
James Ferentz OC
Ryan Lewis DB
Riley McCarron WR/PR/KR
Jomal Wiltz DB
Will Tye TE
Marcus Hardison DT

No LB's or DE's here. One TE.

Becoming?? On this Defense Van Noy is very important.
He is vital.

For what it's worth I like everyone on our PS other than Wiltz (who I don't know) and Ferentz (who sucks). I don't think any of them would let us down if they had to make the step up.

Then again, I also was a big fan of Chris Harper...

How banged up is Van Noy?
He's becoming very important.

Calf strain is what's being reported. He played only 15 snaps Sunday, but looked "okay" until he got in on a sack. Limped off to the sideline and didn't return. Was reported to have a serious limp as he left the locker room, so he may have made the original injury worse.

The good news (speculation on my part) is that Reilly was already in the stage of the concussion protocol that allowed him to practice on Friday, though without contact. He may well be ready to go by next Monday night. He's not a one-to-one replacement for Van Noy, but he still puts another LB on the field which allows MP more flexibility with role assignments.

With Gronk's suspension under appeal and the outcome perhaps undecided until after Thursday's practice (Gronk is prohibited from practicing with the team until then, AFAIK), it's possible that Will Tye (PS) could be practicing with the offense #1s this week, in case they need to promote him to take Gronk's open roster spot for the game.

No roster transactions for the Pats reported yet, so I'm assuming that the open spot on the PS will remain open until sometime tomorrow.

If Reilly is out of the concussion protocol by Wednesday, it's possible that the Pats could waive Grissom and move Tye up to that spot.

I think it's hilarious that Ferentz has become Patsfans famous for being one of the worst players to be protected by nepotism.

The Pats typically have 1-2 OL on the PS who have basically no chance of making the 53-man. They're NOT there as "developmental candidates". They're there as part of the scout team OL for the defense to practice against (rather than using the starters). For the center on that "mock line", it might as well be Ferentz as someone else.

If Gronk is suspended, I don't believe that he counts towards the 53.

I thought that he does count for the 53, but has to be among the inactives. I don't think you get a roster exception for a one game suspension.

I've heard this before, maybe from you, and I buy it. It's just frustrating to watch in the preseason and I acknowledge that it's not about making the preseason fun to watch. Also, when the player who sucks just happens to be the son of someone known to be tight with BB...

The jokes come easy.

I'm pretty sure that's correct. As of the moment that the suspension was issued yesterday, the Pats had an open roster spot. However, once the appeal was filed, I think that Gronk was technically reinstated pending the outcome of the appeal, thus no open spot at the moment.

The appeal might be decided by the end of business today (Tuesday), but it might be as late as Thursday, possibly after practice.

Even if the league reduces the suspension to a fine today, I think there's a good chance that Gronk sits Monday night. However, if the suspension is upheld, the Pats will have an extra roster spot to work with for the game. The sooner they know about that, the better.
