2017 Draft Prospect Thread

Ah, I see, you don't allow us to include first rounders. That takes out a ton of talented starters and superstars across the league. Just looking at the last couple years:

  1. Cyrus Kouandjio became a starter in Buffalo this year (and became a citizen, so congrats to him).
  2. Michael Williams was looking good as a blocking TE for us prior to going on IR.
  3. TJ Yeldon is the main guy for the Jags. Would probably be a star in a better offense.
  4. Quinton Dial is a starter for the 49ers, and he just signed his second contract with them.
  5. AJ McCarron is a top backup in Cinci, and played pretty well last year in relief of Dalton
  6. Derrick Henry had a solid rookie year, and looks poised to be a solid player for a long time
  7. Jarran Reed and A'Shawn Robinson both carved out playing time this year for playoffs squads
  8. Cyrus Jones . . . er, wait.

I could go on, but I think that you get the point.

We haven't talked much about Wise, but he comes from the same program as Trey Flowers. He had some injuries this year and so his production was down, but he absolutely has NFL traits. I'm really warming to him as a target in the same spot we took Flowers. Here he is last year:

I'm a big fan of Wise as a mid/late round guy. As you said, he was injured all year which really limited his productivity, but it showed how good a teammate he is being willing to accept a lesser role off the bench for the good of the team. I think if he were healthy all season he could have played himself into an early round pick. His 2015 tape showed some good potential while in 2016 he was limited to being mostly an interior sub rusher because he was less effective against the run due to hand and shoulder injuries.

I see Wise mostly as a base DE who shifts inside on passing downs. I don't think he is quick enough or athletic enough to be a pass rushing threat off the edge, but what he does posses is great length and strength. When healthy, he uses his long arms really well to keep OT's off of his body and control the edge. He should be a really solid run defender in the NFL because this allows him to set a strong edge and disengage to make a tackle.

As a pass rusher I think his calling card is his bull rush. He's not the most agile guy and certainly wont bend around the edge to pressure the QB like Von Miller, but he will extend his arms, get a hold of opposing O-lineman and drive them into the backfield. He has one of the best bull rushes in this class and while he might not put up big sack numbers in the NFL he should create consistent pressure by collapsing the pocket. His ability to drive OT's back into the QB's lap was the most impressive part of his game to me. Have him play DE on early downs and move him inside on passing downs and I think he will be a good contributor.

In terms of character/off the field he seems like a perfect fit for this team. He has NFL bloodlines with his father playing in the NFL and CFL as well as being a HS coach. He is very active in community service which is something his family has prioritized his entire life. He seems like a really good kid that comes from a good family and would be an excellent addition to New England as a player and person.

How Arkansas star Deatrich Wise Jr. learned the value of community service

The more I hear about Rodney Adams I more I love him as a prospect. Kid was raised right and family is big w/ him. Medical will probably drop him back if it checks out.

Jalen Robinette is another that people will be talking up. Kid has like 30 yards a catch. 6'3+/215. Choppy w/ his steps but what he brings, he does it at a high level.

Taywan Taylor and is another guy I love. He's a freak n will blow up the combine.

Both Taylor and Adams are guys that might be able to step into the slot role in 2 years after learning from the best.

Robinette is a monster, wr/te/flex. He can block some and will only get better once hes coached up.

This is disappointing

The Q I can't find the answer to is what's with Pats regular 6th and 7th picks (traded back and forth several times)? Anybody kept track?

I think this is largely right, other than the confusing Collins trade :

New England Patriots Future Draft Pick Status

1
2
3
3 (Supplemental for Collins)
4 (whichever is lower between Seattle and NE)
5 Broncos
5 (Supplemental for Hicks, could be a 6th)
7 Lions

The main thing I get out of this (understanding trades will be made) is that with 7 picks in the first 5 rounds if we trade JG, Bill likely won't be shy about taking 2018 picks as we have a solid stock of 2017 picks already. I hated the Collins trade but an extra #3 is looking good right about now.

Thanks.
Without speculating about JG . they might still be interested to get a couple of more 2017 picks w trading down (from 3rd and 5th f.e.) since they might see it as a better way to fill the (90) roster after losing more FAs.

Here's the thing with Alabama defenders. They were born and bred in our system then sent to pro teams that do not play our defense. Some adjust, some do not.

If Foster is in the Kuechly/Bowman tier of ILBs, our defense could be incredible. He has to be our Jimmy G pick if/when we trade him. Watching him has been fun.

The OSU CB impressed me the most out of the top CBs so far. Looks like a great fit in our man scheme across Butler on the right side.

This draft could be the most intriguing yet because of the talent and potential picks. Looking forward to all the great contributors in the forum after the season.

Which OSU CB? I think they both declared. Most people have Lattimore higher, but I like Conley for our defense.

Foster definitely reminds me of Bowman. I don't think either one is at Kuechly levels (sure fire hall of fame lock imo), but Foster could be a nice upgrade, particularly as a coverage backer. The other linebackers I've watched who have similar coverage skills are all significantly smaller and lighter, and don't play the run as well as he does. Could be a special player.

I'm trying to dig into some lesser known prospects right now, but I keep coming back to the top picks. So much talent.

Some guys worth a look imo if you haven't already

Check out the Youngstown guys DE's Rivers and Moss. Both show some flashes but not a lot of tape out there.

S Armani Watts is a guy who deserves a look if you haven't yet

I think Daeshon Hall is a guy that could be getting overlooked big time imo. 22 when the season starts. 6'6 260 and a better player than people give him credit for.

Matt Milano is a perfect Pat.

Joe Mathis is def worth a look and pretty complete guy. I sure you seen him watching VV

Anthony Walker was doing push ups at 2 years old.

Tyus Bowser is guy to check out as a possible Collins fit somewhere.

DE Trey Hendrickson

I watched Lattimore. I'll check Conley out though. Adding a Bowman-type player would be awesome.
