Patriots trade 7th rounder to Falcons for TE Eric Saubert

What are you basing this theory on? It's not the actual players, obviously, because the TE position is a dumpster fire right now, in terms of who's actually in camp to play the position. Is your theory that they'll use OL as TEs?

My guess is more plays with Devlin at H back or TE.

I think Izzo has the inside track to make the initial 53 man roster as the blocking tight-end. Saubert is probably only going to cost the 7th rounder on condition he makes the roster* so I don't think this is a hugely significant move other than getting another camp body due to the Lacosse injury. He has an outside shot at making roster only due to the Ben Watson suspension, seeing that he is not really reliable in any facet (blocking or passing) other than his special teams value.

*my projection

New theory: 7th-rounder is conditional on Saubert being on the roster for 5 weeks.

Two comments:

a.) This doesn't move the needle for me, but we gave up only 1 of our 4 2020 7ths....fine by me.

b.) This kid played a lot on ST's and blocks well. Makes me think we might be keeping him on the roster so we can cut a ST'er elsewhere on the roster to keep some non-ST player. Useful to have someone who covers a need at TE/STs for the first 4 weeks.
Only gave it up if he makes the team.

I remember a few years back from his Draft Bio I stopped reading from right here " Tapes littered with drops" yuck.
A tanker truck filled with Jerry Rice stickum was reported pulling into Gillette.

What about Anderson? Do we expect him to be cut? And then it comes down to Izzo, Beck, and LaCosse competing for spots with Saubert now?

I expected Anderson to be cut either way. We already have a pure receiving TE in LaCosse.

Just read on WEEI that to free up a roster spot for Saubert that LaCosse could possibly land on the IR. That shocked me as I didn't think his injury was anywhere that serious.

Damn.

If there is a chance he can come back by week 8 then he has to be on the 53 first. So they would need to carry him on the roster until after cut-down day and then IR him.

Its from Hannable. I wouldn't rank that too high on a believe-ability scale.

Might be the dreaded high ankle sprain

Hey, I like the trade!
It's a low-risk, big-reward gamble on a still-young TE prospect straight outta Central Casting, who's in obvious need of different eyes & voices if his pass-catching potential is ever to be realized. He's also a willing blocker, so that ability should get him looks on STs & 1st down/short-yardage situations.
I place his chances of making the 53 as good as any other TE's chances right now.
Pollyanna.

Did Gronk put the 69 curse on any future NE TEs or something??? This is absurd

Our three most likely TE's are suspended, injured and injured. We need camp bodies. And yes, we may very well acquire another TE.

If Belichick disagreed, he wouldn't have made the trade for Saubert.
