The real problem with trading Gonzo is the fact that you're left without him on your roster. Picks are nice, but now you go into 2026 with your outside corners being iffy. Davis is solid but gets banged up a lot, and is getting older. You can play Marcus Jones outside if you want to, but he's small. Then you just have Woods, Prunty, Canada, and I guess Vildor if you call him up from the practice squad. Maybe one of those guys grow into the role but that's a gamble. The safety play should be good and should help protect them to a degree, but it's a far cry from what you would've had with an elite lockdown CB on the field, and all the picks you get for him won't help you this year. At the same time, not having to pay him mega bucks and only needing to pay Maye next year gives you back a lot more room to breathe on your salary cap. So there are pros and cons long-term, but it's a huge problem for the immediate future.

Honestly, I want him in our defense, but that "want" isn't an inflexible need. That is quite an offer, and I doubt it's reality. But if it is, does Vrabes turn that down?

Anyway, it's all in the mix, all the information is of dubious value, and it keeps the wheels turning until next season. I'm not sick of the "rumor tracking" nature of these types of threads, but I am baffled by guy that show up spouting how sick they are of a cheap owner. He's an owner managing a business. Surprise, it's not just the players that have to look at it that way.

My take? The whole, "hey maybe he'll play maybe he won't" storyline is generated by "he hasn't said he will play." Well, neither have most of the other 52 guys. The difference is, nobody is trying to make up clickbait based on absence of a post saying HEY EVERYBODY I'M PLAYING!

Well, honestly, exactly that. We have no idea who is telling the truth, what the offers are, what the contract language is, none of it.

So far it seems to me that he has been very civil and well behaved. It’s not his fault his contract expired and the team hasn’t given him what he’s asked for.

His handling of that situation has been about as good as it could be. If that’s how he behaves going forward we should want him around.

QBs are the face of teams and Maye will soon be one of the biggest names in the game. People know who Drake Maye is. I bet there are people who have no idea who Gonzo is, or Surtain, or Witherspoon etc.

So, it really doesn’t matter how ugly the negotiations get? If we start worrying about Maye holding out that’s ok, it’s just not okay this year because it’s a CB not the QB?

Or are you saying things won’t get to that point because ownership will cave no matter how outrageous the demands? Maye can ask for an indexed constant percentage of the cap and get it, when it’s unthinkable now?

Your starting corners would be Carlton Davis and..Karon prunty? Channing Canada?

Also, how exactly has he been a thorn? Showing up for minicamp and otas and training camp? Literally doing his job?

The longer this goes on, the less sympathy I have for Gonzo. Unless the team is simply refusing to make him a reasonable offer, it reflects poorly on him in terms of being a winning player that he is willing to depart from a team that just made the super bowl and then improved significantly in the off-season simply to attempt to squeeze out every last drop from the organization that he can. If he's serious about winning, then a deal will get done.

If not, then goodbye. His position is not a position that we historically struggle with. We have had many great players come and go in his position.

We paid top dollar for the CBs we brought in here like Gilmore and Revis.

The Patriots simply refuse to a deal in which they pay $60m up front like Witherspoon's deal.

Why did the Patriots trade a 1st rounder for oldhead AJ Brown when they weren't sure they could sign Gonzo? Because this team is going nowhere without him, and now we're trading away our future? Makes no sense. It's management malpractice.

To top it off, we handed huge contracts to Carlton Davis, Harold Landry and even AJ Brown is going to get paid, but we didn't want to sign our All-Pro?

Lots of assumptions here about what's being offered. From my understanding, unless we're simply being lied to by Kraft, Gonzo has an excellent offer on the table. If Gonzo chooses to break up the relationship between him and the team over not being able to squeeze out even more, that's a him problem. There will be other players who can take his spot and do very well. There always are.
