Patriots Rumor Tracker / FA Signings (Updated: Signings in OP - 4/7)

Doub...ughh that's an overpay

Doubs and Okonowo would be a nice pair of signings today IMO.

Doubs is an outside receiver who's shown some ability downfield but specializes in intermediate routes and has some chain moving ability to him. That works well with Boutte who has really been more of a downfield guy since Maye took over. Not saying he's a #1 or some monster, but they lost their most productive receiver in Diggs and their #1 playing time WR last year was Mack Hollins even before that so there's definitely a need to fill in snaps here with proven production. Many people tout the idea of KWilliams' development replacing Diggs, but the truth is any improvement from him should have already been ticketed for eating into Hollins role because he just flat out shouldn't be WR1 in terms of playing time. So even if KWilliams develops like we all hope, still need someone to take a heavy WR snapload because we should be looking to replace Diggs since he's gone AND Hollins since he just shouldn't be a high playing time WR.

Okonkwo is a versatile move TE which can fill in some of the gaps for those slot-type routes that they let go with Diggs as opposed to last year where we played with two in-line TEs in Henry/Hooper together. Still leaves us without a strong blocking TE out of those 2 TE formations, but you become more versatile in the receiving game. Last year, even with 2 "receiving TEs", our 2 TE set didn't have a ton of route tree versatility. Henry and Okonkwo would be more complimentary in terms of the ways they can attack the defense in the passing game.
Doubs. Check.

Onto Okonkwo....

True...they are all just overpaid!
Overpaid based on what? This seems to be the going rate. How would you suggest teams going about signing skill position players while also having it be team friendly ?

Based on production guys like Kupp and Jeudy are way overpaid vs replacement level #2's, but yes, have to hit on them in draft or you are overpaying for them in open market. Doubs at least is young enough that is entering his prime, heads not always screwed on straight though. In Vrabel I trust

Devin Loyd is gone. He was my want for LB. Now what. They cannot be happy or content with what they have.
Goes to Carolina. Jesus!

Yeah agreed. Today was “drunken sailor day”. Hopefully it calms the F down this week and some value is there.

One positive is Chaisson didn’t sign. Maybe the league doesn’t view him the way he views himself. I’d welcome him back at a sub $10MM/yr price
I bet you’d welcome every player giving half their paycheck back to the team, too. Am I right?

Be realistic, Chaisson is not going to come back here for 50% less than he’d be able to get from another team. If we get him back for less than $15mm aav he’s giving a good hometown discount. Whether you like where this market is doesn’t matter. It is what it is.

This aged well. Lol.
24 hours in FA is an eternity. Look at all the fans who felt this roster was doomed because we only signed 3 guys by 10pm yesterday

I guess we’ll see. No one has signed him yet.

It’s possible they look at his whole career and say “meh”.

Yeah, I love Lloyd and he didn't sign for an outrageous amount, either.

They have to do something with that LB group - Tavai is gone, Spillane is old and was banged up. Chenal? That's my #1 hope they sign guy right now.

Those great Patriot teams always were strong at the second level of the D. I don't hate the guys they have, but there are pieces missing from that group.

Trade up for CJ Allen

It really sneaks up on you when your season doesn't end in December.

I like it.

No doubt! I was thinking about how it (the offseason) has dragged on and on and on the past 'few' years. Pats were just in the SB and the combine already took place....I would say we are chugging along to the new season fine so far...

There's some of that.
There's also some cajoling between front offices and agents that 'that's not really the market, that was the Raiders trying to hit their salary floor', so we might have a quiet couple of days.

Hendrickson is finding that out right now.

I'm also pretty curious about what Stephon Diggs' market is now.

I wouldn't rule out Diggs returning on a 1 year deal. He could find out his value in the open market isn't anywhere near the 27 million the Patriots would have had to pay him, That would be putting a band aid on the position, but it's more likely they just draft a WR Day 2.
