One of our intrepid reporters noted Stupar appeared to still have a locker. One presumes the Pats had some expectations in that direction, though I'd try for the Bills too if I was a young TE trying to break into the NFL.

I expect the final stages of team building found him falling a bit short, but still on the shadow roster.

Not a biggie but we needed a TE and kept Spann instead before acquiring a FA a day later so I think removing names from lockers was probably a low priority on Labor day weekend. Maybe our signing an ex JET was Stupar's clue that it might be best to move on.

I think if you watched his overall performances including in camp objectively with an eye towards what each of them was being asked to do versus what they actually did and when this was not a shocker. The media set themselves and the fan base up over a throwaway comment that they really liked Gutierrez. They let that color/skew all their observations thereafter, about him as well as Cassel. I think Cassel was always intended to be a stable backup they might flip if they found an equally good or better one. They didn't. That is why they drafted O'Connell. Cassel is not signed beyond this season and if he didn't want a shot at starting (or at least backing up some injury prone starter) he would lack the ambition to get better and make him history here in 2009 either way. Gutierrez was odd man out because he did not pass Cassel on the depth chart in the eyes of the guys who know what they are looking for and at. If he looked like it was really going to be a close call they might not have drafted O'Connell - although the forcast for QB's in the 2009 draft was said to be shaping up as a thin one and that played some role in their decision. Had Gutierrez panned out they might have been looking to flip O'Connell in 2009. Now it's far more likely he becomes Matt Cassel for the next 3-4 years.

Bill made a comment last week that was insightful if you were really listening to him. He said if a guy finishes a race strong and it was a close race to begin with he might win, but if he was well behind that strong finish would still land him behind the guy he was chasing.
