Pats hire Dom Capers as DB coach, fire Joel Collier, move Caserio and O'Brien

Re: Does Dom Capers hiring mean Belichik is in trouble

I certainly don't fault nepatz for raising the issue - and note he's only asking a question, but I think everyone would agree that we shouldn't read too much into this.

Such a theory might be worthy of consideration if they simply brought Capers in as an "Assistant Head Coach" or something, but in this case its clear they were not happy with Colier, fired him, and brought in Capers to take his spot.

In other words what motivated this was a desire to upgrade our Secondary coach, pure and simple. That being said Capers brings broader experience than just a normal positional coach - but that's just a plus, not a statement on Belichick's future.

If anyone should be worried, it's Pees. Belichick has nothing to worry about.

You guys are reading this wrong (or possibly not at all, except for the subject). He was asking if it means the Patriots are afraid Belichick could be suspended (NOT fired) and that the Pats would prefer to have an assistant coach with head coaching experience rather than having to scramble with McDaniels and Pees or Scharneccia.

It's a worthwhile question and while I'm not sure it's a accurate it's worth a thought.

threads like this are exactly like the gameday threads....a whole bunch of scary mary and chicken little breast beating...jeezus, learn to relax a little bit and ENJOY this team without the constant paranoia.

Re: Does Dom Capers hiring mean Belichik is in trouble

Maybe this means Dean P's job is in danger

Well, I've wondered if they might move to a more physically oriented coverage over the next few years, and Don Capers hiring just might be a step in that direction.

I wouldn't really say Pees has to worry about his job, but I think Capers could help the secondary improve, and he could make a good DC if BB ever decided to promote him.

Also, this will be like having three DC's on the staff (BB actively coaches the defense, Pees is the DC, and Capers has been a good DC in the NFL), so it's a welcome improvement to the staff.

I don't think it was paranoia - just someone noting that sometimes there's more to such moves than meets the eye...

In this case there's not IMO - but I appreciate someone applying a little additional thought and insight.

The NFL is one big chess game - and some moves are setting up future moves and strategies. That, I think, is why we're all such big fans of this game. Even the offseason is chock full of major strategic decisions.

You've got to be kidding, right?

um no that means Joel Collier got fired and hes being the secondary coach. Why wouldnt they fire Peas and announce Caper as the DC? Because its not happening. Peas lead our defense to being ranked 4th in league. Thats with Rosie Colvin and Seymour being out half the year, an injured Hobbs late in season, missing Rodney for 4 games and having 2 ILBs who are 73 years old put together.

the gameplan in SB wasnt bad..we stopped the run and we just let up too many pass plays. Is it Peas's fault for all the dropped INTs? Not tackling Manning? Gay getting beat a number of times for catches? Hobbs biting hard on pump and being caught way out of position? Samuel going for pick in endzone instead of deflection?

not his fault. Players didnt execute. Everything was there

Re: Does Dom Capers hiring mean Belichik is in trouble

I highly doubt BB's job is in danger. As reported before they were on the outs with Coiller and Capers is a logical veteran replacement for defensive purposes. I'm hoping the defensive play calling improves as a whole with the hiring. It's something to be excited about most def.

Although I don't think Capers is insurance for if Belichick gets suspended, I don't think him not coming in as the Assistant Head Coach is the reason to argue against it. Dante Scarnnechia is the Assistant Head Coach and teams can only have one. I really doubt they would demote Dante especially since it would definitely raise the suspicions of people that Belichick, Pioli, and/or Kraft know Walsh has credible evidence against the Patriots. No way would the Pats want to give Walsh that much credibility.

I think personally that Capers was available and willing to take the job. He hadn't gotten a DC offer and nothing is really available. I see this being very similiar to Ron Rivera who was DC of the Bears and a hot candidate for a Head Coaching job until he was fired. He then ended up becoming a position coach for the Chargers. Sometimes coordinators end up taking a step back after getting fired because there is no coordinator positions open or at least worth taking.

BB is the man and he knows how to fix the problem. I welcome this news. Our secondary D was not that good in 07 because Eli and other QB scored their TDs that way.

With all the free time BB has, patriots team will be better in 08. I want to see #1 ranked offensive and defensive Pats in 08.

i don't know what roll BB will be in 08.

Do you think this could help our cause in getting thomas or maybe even Taylor to posture a little harder now?
I know I know Pees is a great coordinator but i'm saying at least he'd see a guy that Taylor has been noted to like and have alot of respect for.
Moreso than any of his last head coaches except maybe Wannstedt.

The Dolphins are $44 million under the cap. I don't see Jason Taylor coming to the Patriots. The only way I could see Taylor coming to the Pats is if the Pats offered a crazy trade like the #7 overall pick or the Dolphins were desperate for cap space. I don't see Belichick and Pioli giving up more than a third for Taylor and the Dolphins definitely don't need cap space.

Yeah but it be awesome to see him on our side, winning games.

exactly. A guy like Parcells wont let a guy like Taylor leave..especially not to a team like us who they play twice a year and know how to use players

MESSAGE TO CAPERS
Do a good job this year on the DB's this year and next year you're DC.

I don't know why he took the job, and I don't care. What a great pickup!

I watched Pees a bit in college. In one incident, he blew up on a Big East coach supposedly because the BE coach ran up the score. It wasn't even that bad, like 41-10. Piddling for college. He grabbed the guy at midfield and chewed his ear off. The other guy is generally known as a solid upstanding coach who used to work for Tom Coughlin. That doesn't sound like a Patriot guy right there.

Any info on Ass't coach O'Brien's background?

It's not "chicken little breast beating" to ask about whether it would be handy to have an experienced HC around in the case of a suspension.

The answer is yes, of course it is handy to have a backup HC if needed. I am certain that, in the process of getting Capers on board as an assistant HC, that factor was very much in his favor.

I don't think that his real role is "Assistant HC in Case of Suspension," but again, if the Pats are on the fence about bringing him in for what he can help out with on defense, it sure is good they also get a "backup HC" in this particular time period.

But what really scares me is that VP of personnel Scott Pioli now needs a Director of player personnel. But I have no idea whether both positions have always existed (though I don't think so.)

The sky is falling the sky is falling! Pioli's running to the Meadowlands after the draft! No, to Miami to work for the Tuna! Curse the traitorous summabich!

My God! It's the beginning of the Capers/Caserio era! Noooo!!!!

Um, or not.
