The difference I see is that WRs never seemed to get open against the absolute best corners like Revis, prime Rod Woodson, Champ. You can get open against Gonzalez. Currently his elite physical traits let him recover much of the time, but I’d hesitate to pay him as a generational Revis type. It sounds like that’s the type of money he wants. The 3rd year of a consecutive Franchise tag does get expensive, but averaged out over 5 years, the Pats have 5 years of control. I’m fine with that.

Again I don't remember the NFL having so many Good Young CB's who are basically contemporaries. Sometimes you could just Single these type of Players out like Champ Bailey and Darrelle Revis during their times.

I think it is a result of the rules. CB's now just kinda gotta be perfect. It's my favorite era of CB play, tbh. I do miss physicality, but this **** is like... a clinical showing every game. Gilmore feels like the archetype of the new CB: fast, incredibly good at studying his opponents, and extremely surgical with the touching. Rules made it easier to be a WR, while demanding more of a CB.

This is generally how defenses evolve in sports, in response to rules that favor offense. Defensive schemes become a lot more complex while offenses don't have to make that adjustment. You're seeing it in the NBA as well.

Not so sure about that. I understand teams and agents negotiate through the media and often spin things, but you think the Patriots would straight up lie about that publicly?

Not necessarily a lie. A $31M AAV with a final year that he's paid $50m would have qualified as the biggest CB deal. But in realistic terms the $50M would never have been paid, and of course, Witherspoon hadn't even signed his contract yet.

What’s with the revisionist history with Gonzo all of the sudden?? Now, people are nitpicking; acting as if Gonzo gets beat routinely. He’s ELITE at the position. About as elite as you can get; especially in this era. No CB is completely shutting down every single pass, but you’d be hard pressed to find a better corner. He’s the perfect prototype at the position. He consistently wipes out any competition week in and week out. Yes, he’s given a play maybe what, two or three times in two seasons???? Lol He just masterfully shut down the best receiver in football on the biggest stage & even has a classic pose to prove it. Pay the man..Insufferable…

If true, I will say Keion had BB written all over him. I'm so glad we went with Gonzo, but to be enticed by Keion... I think we all really saw some potential there.

Then again, I'm unaware how clear it was Gonzo would be this dominant in the NFL, as I'm not privvy to college football at all. So if it was clear he'd be this good, then yeah, you're taking your chances on a project who could be great over a sure-fire top-of-his-position player.

There is something about Gonzo that teams don't like. And that's been clear for awhile. I am not one of those people, I don't know what it is. But he dropped a lot during that draft. Consensus had him around 7 and he ended up falling to 17.

The last time any team kept a tag on a player who was not a running back was 2020. The player was Dak Prescott.

Now, there have been non-stars who played under the tag, but they were hardly impact guys. I'm talking about players like Mike Gesicki, who played the entire year under a franchise tag. Also Tee Higgins but that was after a really bad injury and surgery.

But no one since Dak Prescott in 2020. This is a really rare situation.

And he does this week in/out.. look at his Contemporaries Surtain and Stingley they are greatly aided by ferocious pass rushers up front... gonzo doesn't have that benefit and he still locks guys UP. Vrabel knows this, the team knows this! Last I heard is the disagreement is over guaranteed $$.. if this is for some reason on RK then it's shameful.. not to long ago he was embarrassed by the Mayo season and the last in cash spending reports before that.. I hope this isn't the case. Everything Vrabel wants to do defensively starts with Gonzo.. He and Drake are the cornerstone pieces of this team!

When he was coming out of Oregon the only questions I remember hearing was his willingness to tackle.. that's likely the only concern teams had.. hence I can bet those 30 other teams outside Of Houston and Denver bet they wish they had a Gonzo!

Couldn't have said it any better!!!! Great Post. Of all the turmoil around the last few year's of BB he left us with an ALL Pro and cornerstone piece in Gonzo. The guy just does it effortlessly.. he forces OC to change up what they want to do.. he allows the guys up front to get home.. I don't want to imagine the team not having him.. whenever we've had lock down CBs we've won championships! Ty law at the top the list. Trading him shouldn't even be anywhere on Vrabel's radar.. the Bust we've had At CB before we hit on Gonzo is egregious... Terrence Wheatley, Jonathan Wilhite, Cyrus Jones, Duke Dawson, Joe Joejuan Williams.. over ther years

Yes you cant' trust what anybody says during negotiations. Both sides.
Its the same as what teams say and do leading up to the draft.
