Curran: "In my estimation... [Gonzo would like to] be treated as if he's at the table in 2027." [previous title: "say goodbye to gonzo"]

The Drake Silver one is from July 1st
Right, my bad on that one, someone reposted it yesterday.
Grilled cheese account did add in his comments that the deal announcement is coming this week. He had the Josh McDaniel official hire, the day the new uniforms were unveiling, Diggs number and the whole Kraft-Mayo fallout. So, he has some contact inside...

Season is two weeks out to the day. At what point do you think resentment will build if it hasn't already?

Oh no, not resentment!!! If he gets a tummy ache as well their season will be lost!

To a certain degree, I feel like negotiations didn’t really start until Witherspoon signed because Witherspoon was going to be the new #1 and Gonzo is clearly a step above Witherspoon. So, Gonzo is somewhat justified in saying “hey I don’t want to get paid just barely more than him to be the new top guy, want a decent bit above that”.

Issue was that Witherspoon and Gonzo have the same agent, so this was able to be dragged out for an extended time. However, I do think this will ultimately get signed before the season starts.

I'm not sure Gonzo is a clear step above Witherspoon. Both are elite.

I think it's pretty clear at this point that both things are true:
-Gonzalez is being greedy/unreasonable
-Krafts have a long track record of being cheap

Who blinks first?

Yeah and he was the #5 overall the year we Drafted Gonzo @ 17.
At this point I don't think draft status is a big factor in these negotiations.

Pats have already said they intend on making Gonzo the highest paid CB. Does that mean they think he is better than Witherspoon? IDK.

That wouldn't be wise; he's Top 5 I don't think he's the Best so I wouldn't sell the farm for him. They are so many good Young ones in the League Today.

It's PR. Could be total contract value. Could be total cap number.

My gut tells me the sticking point is total cash in the first 1-2 years.

I am sure Players love UpFront $$$$$$$$; so we can make the cap hits for subsequent years manageable.

There's 3 guys at the top in whatever order you put em in but theyre all close:
Gonzo,Surtain and Stingley. Period.
All the rest, including Spoon, are several notches below..
The # 1 factor is how well you cover top wrs man to man.
Nobody. Repeat nobody. Has shut down more of the nfl's top wrs than Gonzo.
Pat's have a good D but its not in the same class as both Denver and Houston's.
The biggest difference is obviously passrush.
Broncos and Texans have elite pass rushers.
We don't. Obviously, having elite pass rushers makes it much easier on a cb since you dont need to cover him as long.
Not being a homer, but if you put all of it together, Gonzo is slightly better than both Surtain and Stingley.
So yes, he has a better case for being the best than anyone else.

I might be reading too much into it but Wolf's comment of "cash budget" was perhaps a window into the/any sticking points in negotiations.

Speaking of pass rush You're forgetting Seattle's: but we will be playing them in a week. Stingley is very good too also Sauce. Our D is going really test Gonzo Prowess this season.

Again I don't remember the NFL having so many Good Young CB's who are basically contemporaries. Sometimes you could just Single these type of Players out like Champ Bailey and Darrelle Revis during their times.

Hoping they are spot on. Grilled Cheese has been accurate. Like many of these big contracts go down to the 11th hour. But I’m in the belief that this will get done

Witherspoon is elite for sure, but Gonzo is like 1A/1B with Surtain for best in the league. In a different tier IMO. Everyone is of course welcome to their own opinions though, and I freely admit I may have my homer-tinted glasses on here.

tbh I think Surtain is the best. Gonzo has mental lapses where guys get open. Below Surtain is a group of Gonzo-Spoon-Ward who are about equal, then Stingley is a step below them.

Fair enough
