They could have fixed it... Add a salary bump the year after a player made the team, if they played... And for the teams, that bump wouldn't count against the cap... Like the performance pay incentives the league hands out...

It was sort of like the Pro Bowl because the NFL guys really werent trying to lay out the college boys. And, if a college guy did make a big play the NFL guys laughed it off.

Just remember, even the worst NFL team is filled with college all-stars.

There's about 30,000 D1 college players (low estimate). Even if we go with a high estimate, only about 1 percent make it to the NFL and onto a 53 man roster to fill out the NFL's 1700 roster spots.

That's why I don't ever want to hear about receivers who are contested catch specialists. It means they can't get open against competition where 99 percent of them will never see an NFL field.

Jets are a joke. But every one of those players are of the very few people worldwide to make the NFL. They made it for a reason. I don't think Nick Saban would outcoach Aaron Glenn. How many guys on the best college team have ever been taken in one draft. 6? I know Alabama had Hurts among others.

Some of the all-time great QB's didn't have it easy in college. I think that helped them prepare better for the pros. They knew what adversity was and when to look for it. Mahomes teams weren't good. Brady didn't have the best team imo. Even if he did, he didn't play all the time. Josh Allen (Best QB as of today imo) had a bunch of nobodys on his team.

QB's who get elite OL, receivers, HC etc in college are at a disadvantage going to the pros. Because their whole life has been "easy". Suddenly, they have huge men chasing after them. Guys aren't open by ten yards. The DL is made up of pro players. Many of them great too. You will be eating dirt if a decision isn't made in two seconds. Too much parity in the NFL. The Jets play Buffalo/Patriots twice this year. Would it be surprising if they beat both one time? Yeah. Shocking? No. If the best college team lost to the worst college team, it would shock the nation for days.

I read a Patriots fan on reddit one time say that not having Edwards in 99 helped them miss the postseason. Which in turn led to Carroll getting fired. Belichick hired. The theory was that Carroll would not have wasted a pick on a late round QB in 2000. Because of his relationship with Bledsoe. Whereas Bill came in with a clean slate and was apparently not a huge fan of Bledsoe to begin with. So taking a very late round QB wasn't something he was against.

I think that is a bit of a stretch. But he also said that Vinatieri missed a kick in KC that would have helped them make the postseason. If they make it, does Carroll still get fired? Not as likely. Somehow these things happened and the rest would eventually be history.

Jamal Anderson and Priest Holmes were rumored trade targets. Nothing happened. There was another rumor the Pats tried trading up with the Colts to take Edgerin James, but it turned out the Colts wanted him. They had to use a 2nd round pick on Kevin Faulk (who was awful from 1999-2000) and signed Terry Allen. Their running game was a joke and a big reason for their downfall after a 6-2 start. Although the Pats defense ranked well statistically, the defense would crack at the worst moments costing them games. The home games against Miami and NY Jets were the most glaring meltdowns.

Adam missed multiple kicks that season that lost them 2 games. The game winner against KC and missed one kick at the end of regulation and overtime against Buffalo. The Pats should’ve been 10-6, knocked Miami out of the playoffs and played at Seattle.

Despite their problems, the Pats had no business being worse than 12-4 that season.

In the end though, would that not have "hurt" the franchise more? The Patriots seemed like a "team in the middle" by that point. Not bad enough to get high picks. Certainly not good enough to win a SB though. They were just kind of...there.

In retrospect, it was a blessing in disguise to not make it. Because along came Bill. Who undoubtedly ends up elsewhere in 2000 with Carroll still in NE. Of course, the Brady thing was mostly because of Rehbein. Belichick still had to pull the trigger though.

It's weird how everything unfolded. Especially in 2001. I don't think Bill was a fan of Bledsoe. He said Brady would be the starter if it were up to him in a documentary. But you have to start the guy making that much money. And coming off a 5 win season, it's not as if Bill had a big enough resume to say no to Kraft. Then, Mo Lewis comes along and the rest is history. Who would have thought going to the game that day it would be the last time Drew Bledsoe would ever start a game for the Patriots.
