Okay, for the sake of argument:

Boutte is not a free agent. He does not need a new contract this year.
Point 2, "nobody wants to trade for a guy then set him a massive new contract..." Well, A, it happens all the time., and 2, it wouldn't be massive. He's Kayshon Boutte, not Jerry Rice.

Data points:
- Boutte's contract is not up.
- Boutte came in and competed like he has something to prove (or, like he had something to prove to trade partners, if we believe he wanted the trade)
- Prior to camp, Boutte publicly announced, basically, "It's not me, it's them." I.e., he wanted it to work in NE. Of course, any party can be lying at any time. I mention this in case we believe there was urgency to trade him because we promised to trade him.
- Even if it was a "daddy, you promised" move, it wasn't one that couldn't wait.

I don't remember him being a "me me me" guy at any point, and I just don't understand it. I know I can live without his mid production (until you factor in yards/catch.)

That said, he's the odd man out (as always, for some reason.) Okay. I love the other guys who could also be traded, so it's not a binkie situation to me.

Maybe it's in-building stuff I guess. It could be some species of "Tow the line one more time without a holdout and we'll trade you, and we won't even say it's your idea."

It could even be, "you're right - you're worth being a star somewhere, but we're swinging for the fences and we think you've got a lower ceiling than we want."

It could be, "Hey you three guys. One of you has to go this season,. I don't care who. You're all medium productive. Anybody want to volunteer?"

All that sounds stupid though. I'm putting it in the "unexplained" file.

Of course, the explanation could just be "we need the room to get somebody, anybody, who can take the pressure off the LB corps (via big nickel) and my back hurts too much to go out and play myself so there goes Plan A."

So yeah, I am sure it's explained fairly easily, but not as easily as "he's about to be a free agent."

Let’s play this out. You’re the team owner and I’m the player. You insist I should honor my contract, practice and play, despite having zero guaranteed dollars left on my contract.

My agent convinces me so I show up for work, get out on the practice field and start running… dohhh, ouch I just hurt my hamstring and can’t practice or play anymore. Be sure my paycheck arrives on time.

That you believe a piece of paper guaranteeing nothing holds power over people is where you’re confused. These people aren’t slaves or mindless robots. An NFL team can cut a player at a moment’s notice, the player only has to honor the guaranteed money on his contract.

Secondly, I said a team trading for a player then giving him a massive new contract is not smart. And I was very exact with my words. If Boutte was worth a 4th round pick, but he’s in the last year of his previous contract and won’t play without a new contract, he is now worth a 6th.

If I have to pay him a massive contract and signing bonus, then the trade compensation is lower. If he has a couple years left on his prior contract and all I have to do is pay his salary then he is worth a 4th… at best.

When you do both, you just paid twice for the same player. I could have just used that draft pick on a rookie WR with a cheap, cost controlled contract for the next four years. You’re not just trading for the player, you’re trading for his contract.

It’s not an argument, it’s common sense practice in the NFL.

you continue to discuss "worth" regarding Boutte, while disregarding the pending contract.
Boutte's "worth" is not only predicated on his on the field production, but his next contract.
Boutte's value on the field far exceeding a 6th round pick. his looming free agency is what is impacting his trade value.
If Boutte puts up the same numbers he did this past season, he is getting paid, and he is playing where he wants to play.

the Pats did not put a value on Boutte, the market did. the market digested his production, age, health, and contract status.

Doubs-2025 season. 55 rcpts. 65% catch percent. 13 yards per rcpt
Boutte-2025 season. 33 rcpts. 72% catch percent. 17 yards per rcpt
Doubs-4 years $70m
Boutte with the same stats as 2025-4 years ??million?

So if he puts up 33 catches, 551 yards, and 6 TD he is getting paid? I admit the 6 TDs are stunning, but the other numbers don't equal your claim. Boutte is more like....Hmmmm, what do we do with him because 33 catches and 551 yards with Drake Maye and no high level WR1 (sorry Diggs), just isn't what it should be. I am a Boutte fan because he is a home grown guy who beat al the odds of BB and Mayo, but those stats are not even a #2 guy.

He won't put up 6 TDs with Stroud. Maye is on another level and could drop that ball into the tight window for Boutte to make an amazing catch. Stroud is horrible. He can't do that. He has only regressed since year 1.

6'0 211 pretty quick with a 4.49 40 yard dash. Had 98 tackles his last college season at Penn State.

Seems to be more of a box run support safety than a coverage one from the scouting report I read.

Diggs and Douglass got all the touches out of the slot last year, Chism was learning the position. And Edelman himself has acknowledged that he was on the bubble his first 3 years in New England. Like so many others it appears that you don't have the patience to allow them to develop players, they have to produce big numbers immediately or they SUUUUUCCCCCKKKK!!!

Edelman may have been on a bubble. However his first year he had 37 receptions for ~350 yards, a TD, and 32 punt returns for ~270 yards.

I highly doubt he would be cut. so if injured, he still gets paid. If cut, he is immediately a free agent to sign where he chooses

I don't think that is happening. the Texans are giving Boutte an opportunity to go out and earn a new deal. It appears that opportunity will be better than what was unfolding here

Boutte is 24 years old. proven. hungry. playing for a new deal. he is in line for a classic show me/bet on himself season. if the Texans get him the ball, his production will be interesting to follow

I see Reed in competition with Dell Pettus, Mike Brown, John Saunders and Peter Manuma for one, maybe two roster spots.

They not only need a backup safety, they need to replace Schooler's special teams contributions... and that's not nothing.

You really think Reed is in danger of not making the team? They clearly like this player and I can see why. He was injured last year (a metal plate inserted in his forearm in college broke) but when he played he was solid. He is a box safety who should help against the run. Now you can argue they did not get enough, or should have kept Boutte, but no chance the guy they just got back for him does not make the team. The PR fall out would make this outcry look like a nothing burger. I would have preferred to keep Boutte for the first month of the season just to make sure everything is working out as expected and for insurance. If everything was good after the first month, then trade him. But they decided to do Kayshon a solid and trade him now. One thing I will miss about Boutte is how strong he is. Not easy to move him and it shows on his contested catches.

Yes, he was inconsistent before his injury. You have no idea if his injury had anything to do with his play a month or two after he was injured. You are just assuming that.

But at least you are admitting we don't enough information for you to make judgement of whether he is good or not. Eight games is not enough to make a judgement on a player. Especially when he wasn't anything special in half of them.
