Patriots Player Departure Patriots are sending WR Kayshon Boutte to the Texans for safety Jaylen Reed and a draft pick

Very good thread, thanks for finding and sharing that.

From Tanner’s analysis I’m thinking that Reed sounds like what we were hoping the ideal manifestation of Marte Mapu would turn out to be.

To add another thought… Reed played a ton of single-high/two-high safety as well. He wasn’t solely your traditional strong safety. They were moving him all over the defense... slot, to linebacker, to free safety, etc. That versatility is probably the most interesting part of his game.

Agreed. I mentioned how his frame & skillset remind me of Adrian Phillips. He played very well for us during his tenure here (2020-23). Versatile player with special teams value. It’s funny how Pro Football Reference lists him as a DE during the ‘23 season. ??..

While this team is lacking depth in several areas, WR certainly was not one of them. They had too much depth there. The loss of Boutte is manageable while adding depth at safety, which was a little weak after the top two guys. A linebacker or edge player would've been better, but it's still a slightly healthier overall roster.
"We can't develop wrs"... Lost Meyers and let this one walk for the two year aj brown rental. Got rid of the wrong wr

OK

Vrabel has judged that Boutte's worth to the patriots is the same as a backup safety.

I see no reason to disagree.
The reason comes when Doubs or Brown are injured. If they make it thru all 17 games, you lucked out.

Whatever happens though he's certainly worth more than a backup safety.

My theory is he might like those guys as okay depth but doesn’t see them as future starters. In the playoffs reed played 82% of the defensive snaps on possibly the league’s best defense and has looked good thus far in preseason per reports and pff(take that fwiw). Reed probably has more potential there and we didn’t have a succession plan to byard. Not the most pressing need but at the end of the day it was a need looking down the road.
I can’t imagine he is even keen on them as depth. If we cut all 3 they’d be unemployed going forward

Vrabel makes mistakes too.

Good call on this one Wozzy. I’m not a huge fan of it, but I trust the coaches and I’m encouraged that they obviously think highly enough of the young guys to trade Boutte away. Hoping Reed can turn into something.
