I know this is controversial, but I don't believe he deserves to be in the Hall. He was one of the best of alltime, but arguably not the best ever. For certain, he made the greatest kick in playoff history against the Raiders (I'll never forget it; what a game!), but otherwise he wasn't "clutch" . He missed a lot of kicks in the playoffs (made about 81% of his kicks, to rank about 20th on the list overall). We forget his multiple misses like against Carolina in the Superbowl. Missed a 23 yarder and an extra point against the Chiefs when they lost by three points against the Chiefs in the divisional round for Indy. He was excellent but not substantially better overall and not automatic in the playoffs. If you want to add a kicker he would be the choice, but he is, in my mind, a little overrated. Better than Tucker? The Hall of Very Good....

He doesn't deserve to be in the HOF because a better kicker who is not yet eligible is not in the HOF?

That's like saying it's a travesty that Drew Brees is in the HOF before Brady. Well, there's a reason for that.

And as it's pointed out later in this thread, kickers are more accurate across the board now. Very good QB stats from the 1990s and 2000s would in a lot of cases be considered below average in today's NFL. That's the nature of the sport.

He was 7/10 in Super Bowls and played until 2021, across a couple eras. Don't get me wrong, I think he was very, very good. If we let him in for the Raiders/Rams, does Eli Manning get it as well? I don't think so on either. Not saying I'm right, but I don't think it's a slam dunk.

Adam hit two kicks in that snow game, the 45 yarder in a blizzard that got them to overtime, then the 23 yard game winner.

Oh yeah, then he slammed the door in overtime on the Rams in the Super Bowl with a 48 yarder.

I think it’s safe to call him “clutch.”

To be fair, kicking percentages now are much better than they were 25-30 years ago. Look at the 50s and 60s, a kicker was lucky to make 50% of his kicks, then it improved to 80%, now, 80% will get you cut.
When he started, league average was about 80%, now it's 85.6%

In playoffs, Gostkowski was more clutch 89.1% vs Adam 81.2% (regular season Adam 83.8% vs Gost 86.3%)

That's why it's misleading to rattle off stats without adjusting to their peers.

It's not what percentage you make. It's how much better it is than your peers in that particular season. Field goal percentage, qb rating, whatever, it needs specific year peer context.

Interesting thing about his misses against Carolina in the SB 38. Lonnie Paxton, their usual deep snapper got hurt game 14 and went on IR. Brian Kinchen took his place, and was not a good deep snapper in those days, hadn’t played in the NFL since 2000, had some screwups in the playoffs. Had a lot of mental issues with his snapping mechanics. Kinda like a 2nd baseman having trouble throwing to 1st. He readily admits the missed field goals in SB 38 were his fault. Luckily a perfect snap for the game winner.

Vinatieri was the most clutch kicker in NFL history. That kick to tie the game vs the Raiders in the Snow Bowl was the greatest kick in NFL history. I don’t care that it wasn’t the longest, the longest kicks in history were in regular season games. He had so many clutch kicks in playoff games and Super Bowls. THAT’S why he’s deservedly in the Hall of Fame. He’s also the highest scoring player in NFL history.

There are many unavoidable inflection points in the arc of any life, points at which change and decisions are unavoidable. Retirement is one of them. Bill was for a long time a master of managing football games, but he has proven tragically obtuse and incompetent at managing advancing age and the decisions it imposes.

I retired in my early 70's, which for me and in my line of work - as a huckster for literature and philosophy, a barker for brainy fun - was just about right. My reviews from higher-ups and students were pretty stellar to the end, but I know I had begun cutting a few corners, dropping a few extras, declining a few challenges, feeling angered by change, being unnecessarily peremptory; and I know that if I had gone on much longer, I would have sort of dishonored whatever very modest legacy I might leave. I wish Bill had done the same, for his sake.

Venatieri kicked from 1996 to 2019 in the playoffs. He hit 81% of his kicks (56/69). Gostowski, as an example, played in the playoffs from 2006 to 2021. He made 89% of his kicks in the playoffs. So pretty similar eras. Gostkowski had fewer attempts but a better percentage 89% (34/38). Venatieri arguably was the reason they won in 2001, but was 5 for 8 the year they beat Carolina and the case can be made that the Pats won despite him. He also cost the Colts the playoff game in 2019 missing both an extra point and a field goal against the Chiefs in a game the Colts lost in overtime. He's the all-time scoring leader due to longevity and the chance to play his entire career for two elite franchises.

Amen, I am one year form retirement and don't want to "jump the shark" and want to walk away without being pushed. Bill could have walked away and gone right to the Sunday shows without missing a beat..

Eli Manning makes the HOF because he is a 2 time Super Bowl champion. Each Super Bowl Manning made throws that basically sealed the win.

BB has fallen into disgrace, and a lot of it seems petty and pissing contest... but that's because BB became quite petty and egomaniacal in his latter years. He purposely pissed off a lot of people, was vindictive, selfish, and did the opposite of what was best for the team in a lot of personal vendetta moments. All symbolized by the fact that he won't show up for the HOF ceremony... where his kicker that gave him 2 of his rings was being enshrined... and where the voters who punished him for his selfish shenanigans are watching... yet BB thinks that will endear him to them next year???
Is BB the greatest HC ever? Yes! Can he be a selfish jerk? Absolutely.
He belongs in the HOF, but he could help himself by showing up and showing a bit of humility & class.

I didn't bother with the HoF stuff this year and probably won't until Brady is in. They made a mockery of the Hall when Belichick was not a first ballot guy. There's no taking that back.
