If it didn’t change why would Bob announce it changed very publicly?

He never announced the change in Belichick's total control because it never changed. Let me post the exerpt from the article you posted.

So basically the article says Belichick could have overruled his staff and waited for Mills. He chose not to. He wasn't overruled. It was his decision to defer to his staff. That is no different than him making the choice himself in terms of responsibility for the pick. Jones was as much on him as it was his staff.

And even Howe says that Belichick like Mac Jones. He just didn't want to take a QB that high.

Belichick said a year after he left that personnel had changed his last few years there.

I saw a report that most teams see Boutte as a WR #4 on most teams. That means most teams don't really see the value for trading for him more than a late third day pick (maybe conditional that could be more if he produces).

Most teams have 90 man rosters now and young guys they want to see practice. If a trade is going to happen we probably have to wait for camp to start.

The only time Kraft ever got involved in personnel decisions prior to 2021 was Brady related. He negotiated Brady's contract. And in 2019, he sided with Belichick over Brady.

Other than what the budget was, Kraft let Belichick do whatever he wanted. Even after 2021, there is no proof that Kraft was involved

And no one lied. Belichick maintained final say on personnel decisions. Didn't change. He just allowed other people to have more input in those decisions. From the same article you posted:

“After previously vowing to be more collaborative, Belichick recognized he couldn’t go back on his word with his first selection under the new approach,” Howe said. “Before calling Jones, Belichick repeatedly asked his staff members if they were fully on board with the selection. He received no pushback.”

So there was no real change how personnel was chosen. Belichick just agreed to be more collaborative with the decisions on personnel. He didn't loose control. He CHOSE to give others more input.

And if he thought Jones was going to be a bust and he didn't use his final say power to overrule the pick just because he wanted to be a team player, that is worse than him thinking Jones was going to be a star and drafting him.

Mac was mentally weak and of low character… there’s no coaching that away.

But he saved the 49ers season going 5-3 putting them in position for the #1 seed when Purdy returned. He took big hits and made some tough throws to help them win games. He could've easily folded like a lawn chair in big moments, but he didn't. Having a competent offensive play caller guiding you certainly helps.

Bill keeping Mac in games as he crashed and burned with a smirk on his face was a clear indicator what he thought of the pick.

And he lost his job over that. It was obvious Jones was a limited passer, but Bill proceeded to nerf him further by hiring Patricia to run Shanahan's offense only to get called out by Bourne. That was scraped after a year and Bill was forced to bring back O'Brien in which the offense ended up being worse than the year prior.

The O-line was deteriorating and none of the skill players on offense were going to scare any defense. BB chose to mimic the early 2000's way of building his team through defense, but they constantly got pushed around by any competent offense. Jones was set up to fail.

Bill has nobody to blame but himself for the way he coached and built the team post Brady.

Kraft on the possibility of taking control away from Bill instead of letting him go:



"Every decision has been his".

Pretty clear cut to me that even Kraft believes Bill always had final say from start to finish in his time here. Kraft wouldn't be mulling over taking some of this power away from Bill if it was already taken away...
