Patriots Injury News Mike Reiss Provides Clarity on Jacas' Absence

Typical Kraft directive of nitpicking over pennies.
It's all so tiresome. The franchise is valued at 9 billion dollars.
why do you always take the conversation in this wrong direction?
do you really believe Kraft is making a decision on a 2nd round rookie contract language?
the agreement, stipulating if injured, Jacas would still recieve his slotted salary, is predicated on getting injured while practicing, not having a preexisting injury. which Jacas does have.
is Jacas even ready to take the field, healthwise?

His draft call is looking worse and worse by the day imo. Thats a dude that would seemingly do whatever it takes to get on the field period. Even one leg.

It's not clear if Jacas is asking for more, or the Patriots for less, because all of the medical issues.

Very messy, overall.
his contract is slotted. only the guaranteed money after year 1, and the timing of his bonus payout is under negotiation.

A labrum, foot, hamstring, and knee scope for "cleanup". But medically cleared.
At least the narrative to why he is not practising or signed now kind of makes sense.

A glass half full view could say shoulder labrums often aren't symptomatic anyway, the hamstring should have healed, the knee has been cleaned up, and the enforced recovery period won't have done the foot any harm either. He should be a full participant at camp and beyond.

But I agree with your previous post on another thread, there are questions whether the team fully understood his physical condition and what that would mean post draft before they used multiple picks to trade up, it also raises questions about what is going on with Jacas and his advisors. As you say from the outside it looks pretty messy.

Hopefully nothing more than "messy". We don't want it to get to the "ugly" stage.

I like your glass half-full view.

If Jacas had a 1.59 10-split in early April with a bad foot, knee, and hammy, imagine what he can do when fully healthy!

I'm confused about this pick now. What round was he projected to move? Were his medical issues not known/disclosed? Goodell is definitely going to give us an extra Round 2 pick in 2027!

"One factor behind #Patriots rookie DE Gabe Jacas’ absence is that he is not being given a standard “participation agreement” by the team, per
@MikeReiss
.“Most draft picks receive such an agreement, which states that if they were to sustain an injury prior to signing their first NFL contract, the team would still be obligated to sign him to a contract based on the slot he was drafted.”

That sounds very shady from the team.
It sounds very responsible on the part of the team. This reflexive tendency to favor the employees (these poor exploited multi-millionares in the making) over those who own and manage the business entity which makes their prospective wealth a possibility - is foolish. We root for the players because they are out on the field, but without the team, they are just mesomorphs with a knack for violence, no more employable than the average guy on the street, in some cases less so, since most are burdened with a phony degree. I guess this sort of thing is inevitable in a state as liberal as Mass, but thankfully I moved out of there years ago. Give the guy a fair shake - fine - but pantytwisting over his "exploitation" is childish nonsense.

There is a wrap on his left knee. Vrabel said he had a procedure.

Why is your agent telling you to hold out? I saw an article earlier this week that said he was holding out cause he wanted to get the highest % of guaranteed money that a 2nd rounder has got. Dude....

I think that is agent spin. My guess is that the agent did not disclose all medicals. When the Pats figured it out, they made an action plan to bring in Jacas when they are happy with him. The agent spun it to make himself look better. There is very little to negotiate. Its slotted.

God forbid we favor millionaires who put their bodies on the line over the multi-billionaires who sit behind desks and hire them.

At this point this MARGINALLY disturbing and perhaps a little embarrassing for the front office. But in the big scheme of things, it's just something to talk about as we go through the slowest 6 weeks of the off season. However, if he opens TC on the PUP list it WILL be time to start to be concerned. Rookies need EVERY snap they can get if they are going to make an impact in their rookie season. TC injuries lower their chances to do that.

But at this point, there is no reason to believe he won't be ready at the end of July, And when that becomes clear, his signing will happen quickly. There is little wriggle room these days where contracts are pretty much slotted by where they were drafted.

Basically this.

He’s not yet signed because of the medical, and hasn’t received his participation agreement because the injury existed prior to even entertaining such an agreement. You can’t receive a participation agreement about “if you get injured while practicing” if you’re already injured and incapable of participating.

If this was a known injury and the team knew he wasn’t going to contribute for a while, and knew all of that when they drafted him, I don’t think this would be much of an issue. Whether there was a failure to disclose or something, hard to say, but it seems sensible to just wait for several reasons - his injury issues won’t keep him out much longer and he plays a position that can ramp up and be utilized relatively quickly. It’s easier to be a rookie DE than a rookie WR or TE, etc.

He would’ve been a rotational player anyway so I’m not fretting over it too much yet. If he’s still missing come August then it’s a concern.
It does seem that at best we have a player with character issues.

Given his college injuries, it would seem that patriot staff did much checking and many physical exams. This would seem to be normal protocol.

It seems likely that something was undisclosed or hidden from the patriots. With regard to the contract, if all this was innocent, at very least he and his agent should try to show a positive attitude. Why wouldn't he show up at practices, even as a non-participant while the medical issue was being addressed? And, YES, if there is an undisclosed issue, he should accept a lower level of guarantees.

If there is no real issue, surely the patriots could have him at practice and could tell everyone that the signing is delayed until the medical issues are addressed and that the team expects to see Jacas in camp and for him to be a contributor to start the season.

BOTTOM LINE
We are likely not to learn anything until camp physicals.
