Best Defenses of All Time

The 2000 Ravens are the most overrated defense of all time. The 2000 season was a joke as well as their schedule. Titans defense was actually better than them statistically in many categories which you didn't know because their offense was even worse than the Ravens. They would've gotten obliterated by the Rams had they not sustained injuries. The Ravens faced Brian Griese, Rich Gannon, Steve McNair and Kerry Collins led teams.

Once the league bounced back in 2001, the Ravens magic ran out.
The 2000 Ravens played a historically weak schedule (sound familiar? Many champs do), but Gannon and McNair were top 5 QBs in that era.

The 2000 Ravens forced 49 turnovers and 12 more in the playoffs and allowed 10 points or less 15 times. They were absolutely the best defense since the 85 Bears regardless of the schedule. A lot of teams play weak schedules, none do that.

Here's the homer take: 03/04 is top 5 all time. Better than 2013 Seahawks.
If we are factoring in strength of schedule 2003 Patriots move way up the list.

2016 is underrated too. 250 points allowed in the passing, offense favored rules era. And they changed the game by being the first defense ever that could dominate in run D out of nickel base.

The 2014 Seahawks defense should be on these lists even though they didn’t win the Super Bowl. Still an insane defense that took a miracle to beat. They led the league in fewest yards, fewest points, and most takeaways.
They’re on the list.

The 2000 ravens gave up 1 offensive TD all postseason. The ‘85 Bears pitched two shutouts during their run.

Houston doesn’t sniff GOAT status.
Thus far the 2025 Pats have allowed one touchdown in the postseason.

Will Stidham fare better than Herbert and Stroud?

1. mid-70's Steel Curtain
2. '85 Bears
3. 2000 Ravens
4. '13 Seahawks
5. 03-04 Patriots

For those of you who never heard of Sugar Bear. This is a Facebook post by Fenway Park Diaries.

"HAPPY 75th BIRTHDAY TO RAY HAMILTON ...
Ray “Sugar Bear” Hamilton spent nearly a decade as one of the Patriots’ most dependable defensive tackles, a tough, explosive interior presence from 1973 to 1981 who helped define the team’s emerging defensive identity. A two time All Big 8 standout at Oklahoma, he stepped into the Pats lineup as a rookie and quickly became a fixture — strong against the run, disruptive as a pass rusher, and respected in the locker room.
His name is forever tied to the 1976 playoff game in Oakland, when he tipped Ken Stabler’s pass yet was controversially flagged for roughing the passer, a call that extended the Raiders’ drive and became one of the most debated moments in Patriots history.
After his playing days, Ray returned to Foxboro as a defensive line coach, contributing to the team’s run to Super Bowl XX. His long coaching career took him around the league, but his legacy begins — and resonates most — in New England, where “Sugar Bear” became a foundational Patriot of the 1970s.
