For those of you who never heard of Sugar Bear. This is a Facebook post by Fenway Park Diaries.
"HAPPY 75th BIRTHDAY TO RAY HAMILTON ...
Ray “Sugar Bear” Hamilton spent nearly a decade as one of the Patriots’ most dependable defensive tackles, a tough, explosive interior presence from 1973 to 1981 who helped define the team’s emerging defensive identity. A two time All Big 8 standout at Oklahoma, he stepped into the Pats lineup as a rookie and quickly became a fixture — strong against the run, disruptive as a pass rusher, and respected in the locker room.
His name is forever tied to the 1976 playoff game in Oakland, when he tipped Ken Stabler’s pass yet was controversially flagged for roughing the passer, a call that extended the Raiders’ drive and became one of the most debated moments in Patriots history.
After his playing days, Ray returned to Foxboro as a defensive line coach, contributing to the team’s run to Super Bowl XX. His long coaching career took him around the league, but his legacy begins — and resonates most — in New England, where “Sugar Bear” became a foundational Patriot of the 1970s.
