Another Taboo Elephant! [Mac Jones playing well in SF]

Mac could have been Purdy, if McD stayed and Bill supported him/built around him.
Mac could have been Cousins over time.
I think that is/was his ceiling, which would have been good enough to be a playoff + team each year.

During the draft, comps were Cousins and/or Derek Carr, good not great QBs.
Bill totally screwed up his development by bringing in MP as OC sans title and JJ as QB coach.
Whatever Bill's true opinion of MJ was, he did not handle the situation well at all.
OTOH, you can't really expect to win it all with a QB you have to handle like fine china.
It's obvious Bill felt he needed more, but again, he handled it all so poorly.

Losing w Mac lead to winning w Maye. If Maye ends up being a real winner, the lean years - while frustrating - could potentially be over much earlier than many franchises who lose their hero QB.

That said - it’s partly on Mac. While posters are making good points, he stunk. And that has to be partly on him. Blaming others is the sign of a loser.

Look at Baker. He clearly has the necessary skills. He was clearly in a tough spot. But at times he stunk. That’s on him as well.
I think this post will confuse Jete fans.

You said that lean years led to the Pats getting an elite QB in Maye.

The Pats only had five lean years between Brady and Maye.

How many lean years do the Rats need to have before THEY get an elite QB?

It doesn't matter how many years till they get a talented QB, because they'll **** him up anyway.

It is an interesting concept.

The obvious candidate would be NYG since they loved Drake. Maybe 2 1sts (move back to 6 plus 2025 1st and a 2025 2nd? Or maybe get both of their 2025 1st rd picks they used on Carter and Dart? Honestly just spit-balling)

Draft Nabers with 2024 #6 for Mac, strengthen the line with your other picks - maybe they could have grabbed Henry before Baltimore?

..and then **** breaks down and Mac looks like a JV qb - it is what it is - happy we have Drake.

The Giants didn’t step up with an outstanding offer, but if they did, would you feel confident that Wolf would have used the picks well?

Normally I'd pass on this discussion, given the nastiness it sometimes brings out, but something occurred to me while I read it. I was a Mac supporter, who decried how his Patriot experience turned out. He was easily the best QB of that 2021 rookie class under Josh and while not physically gifted he COULD have developed into a solid NFL starting QB who, with the right team, be a championship contender.

I blame Bill and Josh's leaving for turning him into the puddle we witnessed in the 2023 season. But that aside, there is ONE critical quality that Maye has that Mac doesn't, and it isn't arm strength or foot speed. It's the ability to make those around him better. Mac, on the other hand is the inverse. Those around him, make HIM better. This quality isn't something you can measure or quantify. It just IS.

In a parting remark, Mac's "crying" when his ankle got wacked is often used as an exemplar of his mental toughness or lack thereof. I've always seen it differently. I saw it as a kid who has worked his ass off striving toward his goals and in that initial moment thought his season was over and responded accordingly. He was crushed at the thought and got emotional. That isn't so strange. He cared. So while you can criticize several aspects of his game, THAT particular one shouldn't be one of them.
Said it before. Jones really is someone who you'd label a system QB.

Put him in the right system with the right players and he can win games. Nothing wrong with that but you shouldn't expect someone like that to elevate your team.

IMO Mac Jones is Chad Pennington post shoulder surgeries
Almost agree, but Pennington had some guts. At some point, your QB has to be a leader. He can't be gutless.

Those of us who remember the Grogan versus Eason days remember the respect Grogan commanded while Eason was the Mac Jones of his day.

Mac's a poor man's Drew Bledsoe without the cannon arm. Again the stars have to be aligned.

I just don't see that. I agree about the arm but Drew couldn't process as well as Mac...or wasn't asked to. Drew was also tough as nails...like Grogan. Mac is a sensitive human being that enjoys walks on the beach and cuddle time. Drew is also 2 inches taller and 20 lbs heavier.

Jones is a good qb on a good team, on a bad team he is a bad qb. Which was his floor ceiling when he came out.

Um, but Drew stood in there and took some big hits. Not as crazy as Grogan, but Drew got walloped a lot.

Grogan was the nearest thing I've ever seen to Joe Kapp.

You go waay back stater.

I think Mac is changing a lot of minds around the league, except here in NE, playing thru injury, winning games, making all the throws.
sure, Shanny's scheme is spot on for him, but everyone knew that was the case when he came out. it was incumbent for the Pats to take advantage of that. they did for 1 year, and then Bill gave up on him

I'm not sure "making all the throws" is a great call after his 2 INT performance last week, one a true game killer in the 4th quarter.

Maybe you're including the other team?

This is the look as the pick is happening;

A throw into triple coverage while two of his guys are standing there right past the sticks all alone... not good!

I think we here in NE are all good, thank you very much!

I don't even know if it was that long. Most people here write off 2021, but it doesn't change the fact that they still won 10 games and everyone went into every game feeling like they had a shot. And they weren't terrible the year prior, aside from Newton falling off a cliff. So basically it was really 2022, and 2023 that was a moderate mess, and then obviously last year the managed to draft Maye and he stepped in and got better as the year went on despite the record.

But either way, you're right. Can't imagine living through what they're living through. And I'm definitely glad we don't have to.

Nah, he's not nearly that good. Pennington's leadership and intangibles got his team to wins despite not being able to throw.

I don't know why people are missing/ignoring the Classic McCorkle Ball from last week.

SF was still definitely in this game.
