Another Taboo Elephant! [Mac Jones playing well in SF]

I am not rooting for Mac Jones. He was arrogant, petulant and entitled here. Just because he was given a short shrift doesn’t mean we owe him our support.

That said, I am not surprised that he is succeeding in SF. The pre-draft consensus was that he and the Shanahan system were made for each other. San Francisco made the mistake of passing on him because they fell for the false narrative of Trey Lance - athletic freak, just as the Patriots made the mistake of falling for the false narrative of Mac Jones - poor man’s Brady (not to mention Bill Belichick - wins with anybody). Fit is everything. Jones found his.

Jones, stacked up against the other QBs in the league, is likely a low end starter - a 25th to 30th best kind of guy. His pre-draft comp wasn’t really Cousins, it was Andy Dalton. That kind of guy can lead a top 10 roster into the playoffs consistently. That same guy has no chance on a bottom 10 roster. Same as Fields, late career Wilson, Tua, Geno, Cousins, Darnold, Murray, Flacco, probably Purdy, maybe Goff too. Jones was no worse than Trevor Lawrence when filling in for him last year because his team was trash. Now he plays with an elite line, a top 5 RB, decent receivers, a good system, and a weak schedule. It should not be a surprise that he is having success, nor should we be fooled into believing this success means we was ever better than below average.

I don't know why people are missing/ignoring the Classic McCorkle Ball from last week.

SF was still definitely in this game.

As the graphic points out, it's fourth down. Any QB with a decent football IQ takes the uncontested throw right at the sticks instead of forcing it into triple coverage. Especially one like Mac who should know by now he doesn't have the arm talent to squeeze it into such coverage.

You've got 5:43 to go in the fourth quarter, it's an eight point game. Take the first down, keep the drive alive, get it into the end zone, go for the 2 pointer. If you make it, it's a tie game. If not, you're still within a FG. It's all in front of you.

Instead, Mac has one of his panic attacks, doesn't read the coverage and does the one thing he simply cannot do, he throws an INT. TPA takes the gift, gets a FG, now an 11 point game, and that's how it ends. SOFMJ.

True but Mac starting games are more brain farts than not

And his worst moments here had little to do with a horrible staff/team mates. He made dumb decisions at the worst times

Little to do? You mean dumb decisions that should be COACHable moments? Interesting

They were cap strapped
Logically they should have mailed that season in and got assets and conserved cash .

But bill wanted to go for his wins to overtake shula. And he had a version for stidham . And we know how it all planned out .

Purdy also has the ability to do the things that have been proven to win big games that Mac Jones will never be able to do which is scramble and buy time and make big plays down the field.

Everything has to be perfect for Mac to function when he's under pressure he's still going to panic make a bad decision and throw a pick or fumble, he could have easily had 5 turnovers at the weekend.
Again we are judging mac by what he did in NE.

When he has weapons and better scheme, who knows Mac mental processing could also improve . Mac was setup for extreme failure here and it should be no. Basis to judge him . Let's see how he does with 49ers .

He had a coach who didn’t want him, and a team that I think was built to fail around him.

He’ll be in the league 10+ years, he’s good enough. Not great, but certainly capable

In a parting remark, Mac's "crying" when his ankle got wacked is often used as an exemplar of his mental toughness or lack thereof. I've always seen it differently. I saw it as a kid who has worked his ass off striving toward his goals and in that initial moment thought his season was over and responded accordingly. He was crushed at the thought and got emotional. That isn't so strange. He cared. So while you can criticize several aspects of his game, THAT particular one shouldn't be one of them.

Mac always struck me as someone who never had a hiccup in life until the Patriots. He just did not respond to adversity like he had really faced it before. Where your whole **** is on the line. No one can bail you out, there isn't a change of scenery that can happen in a jiff.

It's okay. Sometimes we all get that tough lesson later than others. But what I saw that night, and continually on display, was someone scrambling to adapt to adversity in a way where it seemed brand new to him. You couldn't have a worse pairing with that and being an NFL QB, especially a BB-led team. I cannot imagine those meetings lmao.

That MIGHT be your impression based on his time with the Pats, but during his time here AND in Jacksonville he's face a LOT of adversity and has overcome it. So I would opine that while we COULD surmise, while it SEEMED that he didn't deal with adversity based on his time here, as it turns out, he clearly has the perseverance and mental toughness to overcome adversity

he COULD have developed into a solid NFL starting QB who, with the right team, be a championship contender.
Be a championship contender? I agree that there is no reason to crap on Mac, but saying championship contender is getting carried away.
So while you can criticize several aspects of his game, THAT particular one shouldn't be one of them.
Mac's crying over a sprained ankle is part of his weird personality. The NFL fined him for a cheap shot on another player. Watch him on the 49ers. Mac still limps off the field with a pained face when there is nothing wrong with him. Just a weird personality.

This is correct. You forgot "All the whole limping around pretending he is battered and bruised".

Well that's my point. It seems like he had his first bout of adversity in NE and is now a bit more grown from it. His ability to carry through Jacksonville to now supports that.

The part I miss most about Mac were all the Zappe-aholics calling for Mac's benching.

I just don't see that. I agree about the arm but Drew couldn't process as well as Mac...or wasn't asked to. Drew was also tough as nails...like Grogan. Mac is a sensitive human being that enjoys walks on the beach and cuddle time. Drew is also 2 inches taller and 20 lbs heavier.

Hey now, there’s nothing wrong with cuddle time!
