Ok PF2. Nitpick it. I think he’s emotionally immature and gets himself all jacked up. I think it’s going to take a while to break him of that.
You could be right or maybe Maye is not great at reading defenses, going through his progressions, or striding properly in the pocket. I was hopeful to start seeing a progression of learning but it has not appeared yet. Maybe next Sunday?

"Clutchness" is doing the same thing, the correct thing, whether it's the beginning of the game or the very end. It's not about doing something different in high pressure situations... it's about not changing at all.

Tom Brady didn't change in crunch time, he was his same consistent self, took what the defense gave him instead of pressuring something to happen. He moved the chains efficiently and put his team in a position to win.

That's what we need from Drake Maye, he's young, he thinks off balance throws and improvisation are positive traits because he listens to idiots in media and fans... they're not good things. When Mahomes does it and gets away with it people make too big a deal about it... the highlights never show all the times he tries to shovel a pass to someone as he's falling down and misses completely. They never consider that Mahomes has had an amazing coordinator calling uniquly designed plays and talented teams around him to make him look good, and when he didn't... he looked as mortal and mistake prone as anyone else.

We need Drake to become a boring monotonous passer who looks exactly the same every time he throws... his form never changing... that was Tom. Nobody cared about style points because the passes were completed at a ridiculously high rate of success and the wins piled up. He was called a system QB early, he was boring because he dinked and dunked. Over decades his game became more explosive and downfield, but he never lost sight of efficient time consuming drives that end in a score. We need a boring consistency from Drake... that's "clutch."

It may be longer than that for him to bring all of what McDaniels has given him to the playing field.

I get that most of us here are Patriots fans, so we should try to keep a positive attitude here on the forums, but when discussing a single game, a loss to a team they should have beat, we should also expect some negative responses.

I don't get how anyone could say Maye only had a couple of bad throws. With the exception of one or two passes, even his completed passes were off. If Maye had hit Hooper over his shoulder in stride on the outside instead of behind him at his hip, he might have scored on that pass. Two of his long passes were under-thrown and were only completions due to some nice work coming back to the ball by the receivers. Even the DPI play on the Raiders bailed Maye out from his under-thrown ball He sailed 4 or 5 passes over everyone, even the defender. The INT was badly overthrown. There was one sailed pass over the middle where two WRs were in the vicinity and after the play, they both looked at each as if to say, "Was that to you or me".

I also don't get how people say that the D played well because they only gave up 20 points. From my seat, I thought they played terribly. On the Raiders opening drive, they only had one 2nd down play. In the end, the Raiders had 4 receivers that averaged over 20 yards per catch. Four! There were far too many plays where the Raiders had wide open receivers downfield. That's not going to be fixed with one CB, no matter how good he might be. It looked like they were in some sort of man/zone but the handoffs from one to the other were messed up or resulted in a mismatch benefiting the Raiders..
Did you dream this?

Jalen Hurts
Not a bad example even though Jalen Hurts in his first full season had 2 games winning drives in the 4th quarter. So I will say that Hurst showed more clutchness than Drake early on. So I don’t think in my opinion it rise to the category of a QB that was unclutch and develop into clutch.

Hurts showed flashes of clutchness early on. Drake hasn’t at all yet.l despite having multiple opportunities

I really think it's going to be a slow process. The staff is new, he's got to learn JMcD's system, and, to MV's point, they all have to learn how much to put on Maye's plate before he's overloaded. I think he's got a lot of growing to do, and I think it's going to take years. I would like to see him start stacking some good games, but I think right now, as fans, we need to be looking at him stacking series together. Then quarters. Then halves. Then maybe games. How does he respond after something bad happens? This week was horrible after the INT. How does he respond after a **** second half?

I also think they've got to establish the run somehow.

I think we all need to be patient. I get that everyone wants him to flip the switch. I really don't think it's going to happen as quick as some folks do.

What McDaniels needs to give him is better play calling than 30 drop backs and zero handoffs to rb1 or rb2 in a half.

Anyone watch JJ McCarthy last night? Personally, I was very vocal in wanting to draft him ahead of Maye.

After shaking off some rust, he looked tremendously poised in taking his team from behind to win. His throwing mechanics are light years ahead of Maye's right now even though he is a rookie. Throws with a nice wide base and really limits extra hitches and unnecessary movement in the pocket. He can run, too.

I did mention when I posted this that the guy has a bias against McDaniels and Vrabel.

just need to ignore that and you can make your own judgment on Drake because all the plays have been edited down to one footage and he does a better job at judging the QB then he does play calling/coaching
Agree.... and I did see you wrote that. Just very hard to get over it.

You're 100% correct. I gained a lot of admiration for the seasoned much older Peyton Manning who was very clutch late in his career, and not so much earlier.

Maye seems to still have problems under pressure like he always had. His int was a result of pressure. He scrambled under pressure for only 2ish yards per carry on Sunday way down from almost 10 last season. That’s not much of a payoff if you have a problem with fumbles and you’re taking a chance with the ball.

On the bright side 22 years old is the right time to break the bad habits he created for himself playing behind a pile of an OL in college and last season. And he did well enough pushing the ball down the field.
He got hit on the INT. Call it holding the ball too long or whatever, but he didn't seem bothered by the pressure there. If he should be knocked there it's for being indecisive and misjudging how much time he had to throw. But he wasn't scared.

It should be obvious this year's coaches do not want Maye piling through defenders for yards.

Im glad I don't live in new england anymore cause the overreactions are insane. Having lived through 3 decades in Massachusetts I'm glad I don't have to hear these buffoons on TV.

Bo nix had 3 tos. McCarthy had 6 straight 3 and outs. Why did the commies only score 21 points? Where were the lions? Miami?

I have faith these issues will get worked out. Week 1. Seriously it's week 1

I mean Manning has still one 4th quarter comeback during his awful rookie year and had 7 4th quarter comeback or winning drives in his second year.

So no Manning wasn’t unclutch. He just wasn’t on the same level as Brady.

And McCarty rose when the moment got bigger and played well to bring his team back and win the game.

Drake crumble in the same position. McCarthy is less talented than Maye but he has the intangibles that Maye doesn’t.

I don't like Aaron Rodgers much but he was that same way against the Jets Sunday. Not pretty but they scored 30+ points by doing the little things to make plays, taking hits, etc., keeping the Steelers in the game.

Not 1 week- 6 years of this nonsense.

So, this team was an 8.5-win team on Saturday, as voted in our poll and in those of Vegas bettors.
==========
Our inexperienced quarterback, playing his first game in a new system, looked lost and we lose by a touchdown, allowing 20 points.
======
CONCLUSION
We are a hopeless team that needs 3-4 years to rebuild.

That is UTTER NONSENSE! I get it that many think that this is a 6 won team. That may be true. However, it is NOT much more true today that on Saturday. We don't know how long it will take for Maye, the OL and the Offense to become an NFL Offense.

The Defense is a top 10 Defense, maybe better.

Our receivers looked OK, especially Henry and Boutte and this with a terrible performance from Maye. Williams will get better, but we have 4 others who will perform, and one future prospect.

Our RB's are better than last year, and Stevenson should have fewer reps.

Our TE's are the same.

Our OL is much, much, much better than last year.

And we found this out in a poorly played game. Wait until the Offense and OL has had a chance to gel. The reason folks think that we might only win 6-8 games is because it might take half the season for the Offense to be anywhere near a decent Offense, with OK QB and OL play.

Just BTW, I thought that the OL played much better than I thought that they would. Campbell will take time but looked pretty good. Bradbury was very good. Moses had his hands full with Crosby but did OK. Onwenu was OK. The weak performer was Wilson. We're asking a lot of him. He really is a rookie center. What the OL needs is health and time (and yes, to trade for a veteran LG).

I get where you are coming from, but propping up a pre-season poll of fans as being significant is like building on quicksand. The same is true of attaching significance to what gambling houses do. They're just trying to keep the money on both sides equal so they can live off the vig, so in essence it's an opinion poll too. Their actions are based on what the fans do, not based on analysis of the product on the field.

I think you can and should update your opinion after the first game, and after the first four as well. For instance during the pre-season if Maye had a bad play we can say it's pre-season and they're just trying things out. Now we know they aren't just trying things out, this is their actual best effort for this point in the season. If they're doing the same things after game 4 it's fairly likely they will be doing it the rest of the season, barring an unforseen growth spurt.

He's not a rookie.

You won’t. it’s not something you can learn.

You either have what it takes or you don’t and Drake Maye clearly doesn’t.
I knew I shouldn't have signed in this morning, figured the "JJ to the HOF" after one game guys would be here...

That said, having some of the league's best receivers and a veteran OL sure helps ...

It’s too early to say if Maye will or will not have the killer attitude and winning intangibles.
