I do not think he is dumb. However he has had numerous opportunities to come up big in a clutch situation and has failed them all.
McCarthy tonight against the Bears was the exact opposite. He did not accumulate impressive passing statistics but rallied his team back from a double digit deficit in the fourth quarter.
Until I see some evidence that he can come up big in pressure situations, I will continue to have serious doubts about him as a franchise QB.
You won’t. it’s not something you can learn.

You either have what it takes or you don’t and Drake Maye clearly doesn’t.

Pretty concerning quote to be honest. now WR need to cuddle Drake Maye. Tell him that everything is fine.

It reinforces that Drake Maye doesn’t have what it takes to be successful. It’s Mac Jones all over again.

Just want to note a positive, coming out of the first half the patriots had the ball 8 minutes longer than the raiders.

Are these armchair analysts really going to sit back and say, this OC doesn't know what he's doing?

I appreciated much of the work here, because it shows Maye did not have the horrible game many people are representing here. He made some really nice throws.

But in this video, the critic is going after a coach at the top of his profession in this fashion, it makes me wonder how narcissistic the critic is. I am definitely not saying coaches should not be criticized for bad decisions or whatever. My posts in this thread are evidence of that. But this goes beyond that and it questions McDaniels' knowledge and awareness, which is absurd coming from an armchair analyst.
I did mention when I posted this that the guy has a bias against McDaniels and Vrabel.

just need to ignore that and you can make your own judgment on Drake because all the plays have been edited down to one footage and he does a better job at judging the QB then he does play calling/coaching

I disagree, you can gain experience what to do in situations but you either have the speed of thought and the vision or you don’t.

Same in all sports, not specific to NFL.
DENSE! KNOWS NOTHING!

Acutally no. But who is counting - LOL.
Ok PF2. Nitpick it. I think he’s emotionally immature and gets himself all jacked up. I think it’s going to take a while to break him of that.

I hope abandoning the run isn’t something we’ll see regularly from Josh this time around. We saw it a bunch of times before with him.

And ended up tied. You want to know why the defense fell apart in the 2nd half? They were on the field the entire time.

Maye seems to still have problems under pressure like he always had. His int was a result of pressure. He scrambled under pressure for only 2ish yards per carry on Sunday way down from almost 10 last season. That’s not much of a payoff if you have a problem with fumbles and you’re taking a chance with the ball.

On the bright side 22 years old is the right time to break the bad habits he created for himself playing behind a pile of an OL in college and last season. And he did well enough pushing the ball down the field.

Nah. Cork can only dream of having the physical tools that Maye has. Everything was always set up perfectly for Jones at Bama and he can’t play when things go wrong like they do a lot in the NFL. Maye has never had that luxury in college or last year.

I think there's also the rust factor, where most of these guys barely played in preseason or didn't at all. That could've been a partial cause of some sloppiness that they should be able to clean up. If the guys don't work to improve it then they probably get replaced.
That's another fair point. I sometimes think the reduction in the number of pre-season games isn't necessarily much of a boon for fans. It used to be interesting to watch teams develop over the course of the pre-season when the pre-season games were at least a little legit, when you got at least an occasional look at top-of-the-roster players, who now pretty much just do a cameo in one or two games. These days most of the actual work of building the team is done where the fans can't see it as much. Add to that that the teams are not really prepared for week one, particularly those in flux, such as we are, and we end up getting charged to watch for full price, so to speak, what are essentially pre-season games. The longer season compounds the problem by motivating teams to reduce the work load of their best players in pre-season in anticipation of the very long grind that the for-real season has become, so we don't get a look at them or even hear about them. In short, teams are simply less-prepared for the season than they used to be, and a team with 50%-new roster is bound to be way behind the curve.

I'm sure there are arguments on the other side, but from a fan's perspective, I'm not sure we are well-served by the changes.

I am not really discouraged by the first game, but I am a little disappointed. All I'm looking for this year are signs of improvement, and it was hard to discern any such thing on Sunday.

They were on the field because they were stopping the Raiders.

But when you don't have the clutch gene , no matter what your physical tools are you come up short .

In tennis, zverev , tsitsipas and most important of all Nick krygios.

Mats wilander was an ok player but managed to win 7 grand slams. That's what you need . Ability to come back from the ashes. Brady had that in spades along with oodles of talent.

Coming from a loser of a program in UNC , Maye might lack the clutch genes or winning mentality while Mccarthy always has the dog in him and spark .

It's too early and hyperventilation on my part, but tbh Mac Jones looked the part in his first few games and we just had a lower bar set for maye last season which helped temper expectations and we were content when he made some wow throws and AVP and mayo bore the brunt for his poor game results .

This year coaching is better offensive line much better and more experienced wide receivers। The cup of excuses have run dry.

If we look at it objectively, he needs to get that first signature win . I don't mind the loss , but this loss was majorly on him

I get that most of us here are Patriots fans, so we should try to keep a positive attitude here on the forums, but when discussing a single game, a loss to a team they should have beat, we should also expect some negative responses.

I don't get how anyone could say Maye only had a couple of bad throws. With the exception of one or two passes, even his completed passes were off. If Maye had hit Hooper over his shoulder in stride on the outside instead of behind him at his hip, he might have scored on that pass. Two of his long passes were under-thrown and were only completions due to some nice work coming back to the ball by the receivers. Even the DPI play on the Raiders bailed Maye out from his under-thrown ball He sailed 4 or 5 passes over everyone, even the defender. The INT was badly overthrown. There was one sailed pass over the middle where two WRs were in the vicinity and after the play, they both looked at each as if to say, "Was that to you or me".

I also don't get how people say that the D played well because they only gave up 20 points. From my seat, I thought they played terribly. On the Raiders opening drive, they only had one 2nd down play. In the end, the Raiders had 4 receivers that averaged over 20 yards per catch. Four! There were far too many plays where the Raiders had wide open receivers downfield. That's not going to be fixed with one CB, no matter how good he might be. It looked like they were in some sort of man/zone but the handoffs from one to the other were messed up or resulted in a mismatch benefiting the Raiders..

They have the same problem. They can’t execute when the pressure rise.
