Zach Wilson is a good POTENTIAL comparison. Hope its not true

No he isn't. Wilson was a turd who was uncoachable. From all accounts, Maye accepts coaching. Wilson thought he knew better than everyone else including his coaches.

The Jets were probably always going to ruin Wilson. But Wilson made it easy for them to ruin him.

And even if Wilson was coachable, I don't see the comps. Wilson wanted to hit the home run on every throw. He wouldn't throw a five yard pass and run around forever until someone got open down the field or just throw into triple coverage down the field.

Now Maye has his issues with checkdowns and seeing the open man when his first read isn't there at times, but not a gun slinger like Wilson is. He does take the smart throws over the big hits when necessary.

I think there is a legitimate comparison where they are both QBs with worlds of natural physical talents, but need to work on their mechanics and intangibles (football intelligence and such) and become more disciplined in their game. But that is where the similarities end in my book.

I think Wilson was doomed for failure before he was even drafted. I think Maye has at least the possibility to be turned into a good or great QB.

There's a LOT of positives to build on.

We saw the D play well and play poorly

We saw the O play well and play poorly

There might have been some disappointment that they weren't able to really use the run to set up the pass, and had to rely more on a passing offense, which put more pressure on Maye and the OL, but I don't view the team's play as an embarrassment, the way I often did last season.

So for me, they played about to expectations. I know everyone compared the Raiders and Pats as two teams that were rebuiilding with a new coach, but the Pats have more rookies probably than any other team, and less experience playing together than most teams - and given that, I think they played about the way I expected.

A loss, but not an embarrassing loss.

Overreaction (maybe not) - Spillane is a fraud.

Sign Bentley back, and this front 7 would improve immediately.
Hey, I might even say that about Tavai right now.

It could get ugly in Miami with many one play TD drives. Tua is undefeated against us: we made the Raiders TE's look like Gronk in his prime: not saying Bowers ain't Great but Mayer looks like the second coming.
Twin mayher was open becuase of presence of Bowers.. just like what gronk did for us.. a great player open up the field for others.

I thought the Pats would be able to run the ball, they couldn’t and I thought the Pats would struggle stopping the run and they didn’t.
6 sacks, INT, 56 rushing yards allowed, 20 points... that any defense would take...

Offensively take a peak at the numbers. They were relatively close. The offense wasn’t good, the defense wasn’t bad. That’s not a ballsy statement to make i get it but it’s where we are and kind of where we should be too.

On offense the third down efficiency needs to be much better. They were dead men walking when it was third and anything beyond three yards.

They still seem to waste a play every drive by having Rhamondre run right into the line and get 1-2 yards on second down after and incompletion and were seemingly always at 3rd and 8, not an enviable spot to be in especially with a new offensive line, young QB, let us not forget Drake Maye is STILL the second youngest starting QB in the NFL. He’s going need help, and he’s going to screw up.

We need an identity as a team and that doesn’t happen overnight, and sometimes doesn’t even manifest in a single season.

Lots of question marks, lots of work to do, we haven’t had a legitimate rebuild on this team in ages, fingers crossed you have the QB and Coach for the future and you can start to build around that.

Maybe we need a "regulating reaction" thread... Trying to get off the def con 2 siren.

It was bad, yes. But, the 2nd quarter was actually quite good. Proving they can do some things.
The total collapse in the 2nd half was likely more on the coaching/plan than any one player.
They seemed over their depth (which is shocking for 2 vets like Vrabel & JMD)

If they get their heads out of their asses, it may be a quicker return to sensible football.
It appears the coaches were more affected by the pressure of this "hero's return to greatness".

Maybe an away game - in a place we historically have no chance - is a good place to go re-calibrate.

Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly looked way more confident than our guys.

Slight correction, they *didn't*. 14 carries isn't trying to run the ball. Not when you've got a ****ing lead for a large portion of the game.
I didn’t get why they only ran the ball three times in the second half. Did they think they couldn’t because of the first half, even if they did they shouldn’t have given up on the run game.

I agree, Thats why I stated I thought they would struggle stopping the run and they didn’t struggle.

My wild overreaction is that the Patriots have an excellent chance to go 0-17 and be in position to draft Arch Manning. But I am still stuck in week one of college footballs wild overreaction of Arch Manning being a massive bust and won't even be drafted.

Gonzo give us a fighter's chance against Miami on Defense. IF Gonzo's out this one could be over by halftime. No way we can cover both Hill and Waddle without him: or with the current misfits.
I saw the Dolphins got blown out by the Colt. Do the Colts have a top defense? I guess that will be answered on Sunday.

Jeanty 19 rushes for not even 40 yards. 2.3 yards per carry allowed overall. They stopped the run really well.
19 carries, 38 yards. #6 overall pick.

Our DC was a defensive line coach. I guess it makes sense our Dline played pretty well.

But the thing is, and is so often true in the running game that gets overlooked. HE GOT 19 CARRIES. Even if he was terrible, it still ran the clock and kept the defense on the field. That's called a complimentary offense.

You don't have to run the ball 40 times if it's not working. But you have to at least pretend like you're going to run the ball. Even if you suck at it.

Josh was on with Julian on his podcast and told a story about telling him how they didn't need to focus on the run this week because he just didn't think it would be successful and they'd be beating their heads against the wall.

I can't help but think Josh got something similar in his head about this game either pregame or after the game started.

Which then the follow up thought is that this is a young Drake Maye to be able to handle that the same as a veteran Brady?

Absolutely baffled by the lack of commitment to the run. The weather and the score only make it more frustrating. It's not like we were in the middle of some high scoring shoot out.

The announcers were horrible, pumping up Jeanty like he was Barry Sanders out there. He had one good run. Otherwise the Pats stuffed him.

I hope the Pats get back to winning soon, if only so that we get good announcers and not those clowns anymore. I didn’t know if I was listening to Adam Archuletta or Dan Fouts at times.

There’s no need to overreact and I’m not going to, everyone needs to improve and it starts with the coaches. If that’s representative of what halftime adjustments will look like the coaches dropped the ball entirely. Nobody looked ready to start the game… they looked outright inept the second half.

As far as the original posters comments go…

Pats are no better or even worse than last season - They’re better. At least the talent is there, last year at this time the offensive line had no talent and no hope to improve.

Dolphins are toast time to rebuild - True, they just don’t know it yet.

Drake Maye is 100% a bust it's time for a new QB - To be determined, he doesn’t have to become a bust to be a disappointment, he could be a Drew Bledsoe “good but not good enough” type. It’s too early to tell.

Daniel Jones is the answer for the Colts - He’s a thousand times better than Anthony Richardson, who will be a colossal bust without major improvement.

Thornton is going to be a star with the Chiefs - If he can stay healthy he can be that field stretching outside receiver that takes the top of opposing D’s and catches 2-3 deep balls a game for a high average. Some Pats fans have an irrational hatred of the collaborations draft picks and root for them to fail. Odd….

Aaron Rodgers is going to make the Steelers great - Rogers on the Steelers instead of last year’s Jets is better for Rogers. It’s a team game and the Steelers are well coached. The Jets have a glimmer of hope with a new coach but still need a QB, we’ll see.

The Pats beat themselves, they can fix themselves… that is reason enough for hope.

So we lost the game. The offense looked disjointed. The OL gave up a ton of fast pressures. Drake Maye was missing some wide open WRs. We couldn't rush the football effectively.

What did you expect? This is all within expectations for a rebuilding team that should have finished dead last in the NFL last season. The Josh McDaniels offense is a VERY HARD offense for QBs and WRs to pick up. The OL is relying on a rookie Left tackle, rookie left guard and an RT who has never played for the Patriots before.

Patriots offense just needs to execute better. Players need to learn and get comfortable with the system. We're on to Miami. That's probably going to be a loss because we never play well there. The thing to look for is incremental improvement. We need players to understand the system better and be on the same page.
