There's been a lot of media chatter regarding Drake Maye not looking great. The spray throws, the missed reads. I fully anticipated that the transition to the JMcD system would take some time. Are you legitimately concerned or is this just media hype and unrealistic expectations that Maye should be looking like a top 5 QB early on in year two?
I'm more concerned about the mental health of those concerned about a 2nd year QB from a non CFP team with the coaches we had last year.

Actually Steve 2002 was Brady's THIRD season as a pro. People forget his uneventful 2000 season and how actually it was critical to his overall development.

I find it a combination of frustration and hilarity how media and fans react to a missed pass or a bad decision like it's a sign of terminal ineffectiveness on the part of Maye. I read where this is his 4th new offense in the past 4 seasons of college and pro football. That is not exactly ideal for a QB's development and yet Maye has survived that adversity to create what most observers believe has been a pretty steady start to his career.

The FACT is we won't be seeing him approaching his ceiling for another 3 or 4 years, so kvelling over every misstep in a walk thru practice really IS kind of ridiculous.

BTW- It's interesting you bring up the Brady "I know the answers to the test" comment. IIRC wasn't it about 10 years or more into his career before he made that comment, not 12 GAMES.

Here's hoping this thread dies a swift death and doesn't morph into a 12 page ode to angst, depression and negativity.
This, to me, is the right approach. Considering the media there has no idea what they're working on (turns out that a lot of Maye's ""bad"" practice in Minnesota was specifically on 2nd and long situations), crying over incompletions in practice is crazy.

The heroball fumble in the game is way, way more concerning to me than anything else.

Nice!

What if JJ McCarthy - Bo Nix and Penix Jr look like world beaters in year two?? What are we to think if our guy struggles??
Wouldn't surprise me if our guy is behind those other guys for the next season or two. Nix and Penix are 3 years older than Maye. That's significant. They're much closer to their finished product than Maye.

McCarthy has played in an NFL style offense albeit as more of a game manager. He wasn't asked to carry his teams like Maye was. He had the advantage Maye never had of being on excellent teams with excellent coaching. So did Mac Jones. McCarthy also has no NFL tape on him yet.

Like with any raw high upside QB prospect I expect our guy to have his ups and downs but the possibilities gives us plenty to get excited about.

I understand the year 2 vs year three thing. I didn't think it fair to compare it to a SB winning season.

“Great” as a rookie is an overstatement. He won one game, he was not good in clutch time.
He looked good at times not great.
Great was Jayden Daniels.
This great as a rookie narrative is overstated
Not when you consider the Mickey Mouse system and checking staff he was saddled with. Not when you consider he had both the worst OL AND the worst weapons in the NFL.
Many players play great but their team loses because it sucks.

JJ averaged less than 18 pass attempts per game with Michigan. It was a run heavy scheme that very rarely relied on JJ to win a game.

Yeah I mean, you can put all the caveats in front of it you want, and you might very well end up being correct in the end.

But the actual results are the actual results. No, I'm not *concerned* but my expectations aren't as high as some others right now either.
The actual results are part and parcel of what you have to work with.
If you stick a QB with poor play concepts, bad play calling, the worst OL and weapons in the league, you can’t expect to compare him equally to other QBs in results.

They really did everything they could to limit his impact.
They went out if their way to not throw the ball and also not have him throw in duress.
I think he is going to be a bust, but if not, Kevin OConnell is a hell of a coach.

And he hasn’t played an actual NFL game, but according to Sam he’s better than Maye right now. Seriously, do some of these posters actually watch football?

O'Connell is the Best HC/QB Coach in the business: though you wouldn't know it with Joshua Dobbs. I expect JJ McCarthy to be very good this year. KOC made Sam Darnell a lot of $$$$$$ in FA.

We shall see. Mccarthy is more accurate and more mobile tha Maye. You are correct we have no regular season film on JJ. With Vikings O line and coaching and better skill players, i expect he will outperform Maye this year

He is not more mobile than Maye. I watched him a ton at Mich. He is in a better position to succeed, but that doesn’t make him better.

Who freakin' cares what they do??? Why do we worry about everyone else?

Saying Daniels or Herbert is stunning. It’s like looking at an NhL player and saying “it wasn’t Wayne Gretzky or Marty McSorley…”

Lotta leeway there my dude. We could line up every Zamboni in North America side by side and we still wouldn't cover the distance between Wayne Gretzky and Marty McSorley

Sam, don’t ever let facts get in the way of your argument
