I guess I am far less worried about LG then others. Strange or Sow will have it covered to a degree that is not below average. I'm more worried about a rookie at LT or the 34 yo RT. I feel reasonably comfortable with the interior.
Agreed

I agree.
on the cusp of camp starting, my opinion is 4 OL spots are locked down, barring injury or retirement. LG is wide open, may the best player over the summer win the job.
Marrone is interesting, and I hope he meshes well with McD.
Marrone played OL in college, and while he hung around the NFL for a good 5-6 years, with 6 teams, but only saw action in 4-5 reg season games.
he has been a college OL and TE coach and a college HC. he has also been an NFL OL and TE coach, as well as an NFL OC and HC.
he has a lot of young, in need of coaching, players to work with, plus a couple of vets that should lead the OL room. I expect we not only see an upgrade in OL play, but less OL confusion, fewer penalties and fewer missed assignments.
last season, we saw an injured and poorly coached OL with an offensive scheme that did not help the OL. we saw a QB in Brisset that simply isn't an nfl starting QB. we saw no playmakers at WR. Stevenson and Gibson flashed when the OL did their jobs. the only bright spot was Maye.
we now should see a much improved offensive scheme and OL coaching. we have playmakers at every skill position.
Also Marrone has two O-Line assistants whom I believe have been O-Line coaches previously. There should be a lot of teaching going on in the O-Line meetings.

VD Low is indeed not a stating-caliber LT in this league; but he does have the size to play RT; so it wouldn't shock me if he sticks as one of our back-up OTs this season.
Size isn’t what separates left tackles from right tackles, this makes no sense.

You are NOT worried about having only 2 LT's, both of which are coming off injuries, and both of which have not shown that they are above average LG's?

He has to learn how to play LT first.
No, LT is a premium position because RT is not as difficult. If he can play RT he will find a niche even if he can’t play LT.

I'd rather have VD & DT than those two stiffs.
Don’t know these ^ initials.
Yeah, hitting the sauce too much leads to poor judgment and other dire consequences. I’ve never had either and prefer to keep it that way. But if I had to choose, er, um, none of the above please.

IMO.. he sucked at LT, and reportedly doesn't play any other positions on the OL, he'll make the team by virtue of him being need to back up Campbell. That's his only value really.

A backup tackle who wants to be active weekly has to be able to play both sides, even if it’s only relatively well. Marcus Bryant played both sides, he is younger and better athletically than the alternatives… I can see him possibly taking that job.

Sow has flexibility if he isn’t starting at LG, those are the two best potential tackles and backups if they don’t trade Strange IMO. Jared Wilson will round out the interior on the bench.

???

You say that Lowe's ONLY value is being the backup LT. That is huge need.

For 20 years, one of the most important aspects of our winning teams was to have JAG's like Lowe on the team. It is critical to have experienced backups who can step in when needed. Obviously, they need to be healthier and better coached.
Given some adequate coaching, that is enough for him to have a long career playing for the patriots.

Saying that injured backup player sucked as a starter is rather typical posting by lots of folks. Lowe should have been on IR for much more, if not all, of last season. The incompetence of management in not getting additional help at OT, even after the season started was malpractice.

Lowe is what he is, a much-needed backup OT, a 4th OT. Even St. Brady found it difficult to play with injuries in the last half of his last season here.

And just BTW, I don't why you think that Lowe can't be backup swing OT. He can play and has played RT. However, for us, he would just be the emergency backup RT on the 53. We have Moses and Wallace (another injured player whose play sucked last year) and we will likely carry a RT or two on the Practice Squad.

Where are you gettting that from? He played RT here in 23.Bit yeah he sucks. The problem is most backup tackles are either unproven and experienced or suck. Few teams have good proven players at back up OT, much less back up anything.

Strange was having a very good season when injured in 23. He was playing at an above average level for 2 months, after starting slow due to the knee injury he had in camp that led to the season ending one

fair enough

Will Campbell has never played guard.

Verdarian Lowe’s only value is getting things down off of shelves that shoppers can’t reach.

I am not Lowe's defender or his excuse maker
but he is 3 years in the league (year 1 he never played)
year 1 he played 33 snaps
year 2 he played 470 snaps between LT and RT
year 3 he played 800 snaps mostly at LT
all 3 seasons, he had a different offensive scheme/co-ord.
he has had little to almost no coaching.
he plays thru injury
he is still only 26 years old. he has great length and reach. he has good size and athleticism. with better scheme/coaching, he could be a very serviceable OT
