Which is exactly what I expect him to be.

Where does that say “ day 1 Mg?
No, you said he'd be a starter by midseason at worst.

That is NOT the same as being our starter from Game One.

That’s right, your the one who said “ day 1” I said he will make the 53 and be the starter by midseason at worst, you’re the person who said “ day 1.” If you want to take either bet then do so, if if not then shut your piehole about it. And in case you haven’t noticed Mg, the young players who contTribute on special teams are usually the ones who get those last active spots in game day, not the ones who contribute nothing on special teams.

Just curious but if Henderson is KRer and Marcus our PRer what other roles will Chism fill on STs?

Baker returned a few kicks last year. Alex Erickson. Jamycal B Hasty. Antonio Gibson.

As electric as he is, the past says Jones will be hurt at some point. There will be opportunities for guys.

I’m not sure where this question came from, but he was not elite. When you think of elite LB’s during that time, the names you think of were Patrick Willis, Navarro Bowman, Luke Kueckly and Bobby Wagner. Then there was everyone else like Mayo.

He was a stat collector who made little impact. Anyone who cares to re-watch the games you’ll see how slow he is reacting to plays and awful in space. He was really bad against Seattle in 2012. He was constantly chasing guys downfield despite having a decent line for a few years and Vince Wilfork his entire career. He rarely had a “wow” play.

Hated the pick in 2008 and Clady should’ve been the pick who was not only heavily mocked to the Pats, but also given what just happened in the prior Super Bowl. Curtis Loften was a way better value in that 2nd round.
How does one collect stats without being good enough to?

Over five seasons he was DROY, went to two Pro Bowls back when that meant something. He was great in coverage, passes defensed, interceptions, forced fumbles, Tackles For a Loss, solo tackles, sacks…. he did it all.

I’d just add those late 2000’s defenses were really thin. They paid Ty Warren a building block contract and he immediately suffered a career ending hip injury. They paid Leigh Bodden a short term but lucrative contract and he suffered a career ending injury. Tom Brady was one of the highest paid players in the league and the league stole a first round pick from them in 2008. Mayo was doing a lot to cover up some of the lesser defenses of the dynasty.

His career was short but he was elite, JJ Watt may not make the HOF because his career was injury shortened… but we’d still call him elite.

I'm trying to figure out what else he does on STs other than returning?

We have several options for returners and he actually seems a little slow for it. As I pointed out Henderson and Marcus seem like better options.

Everyone keeps assuming he'll make it on STs so I'd like to know if it's as more than just a returner?

Good to have multiple return men, if one is dinged up or simply tired you want options. Fresh legs on returns is better. Chism has return experience from college and was effective on punts.

Definitely need back ups but no one makes the team as a STs backup you just fill that in with other skills guys like Demario or Gibson. Or maybe they make PS until an injury.

I seem to remember Jules scoring a TD during the buttfumble massacre when was on the KO coverage team.

OK, let us be clear.

Who do you believe will be the Game 1 starter in the slot for Game 1 and for the first few games of the season?

Barring two injuries (or PUP designation), I don't think that Chism will make the 53 UNLESS he beats out Douglas for his roster spot as our starting slot receiver.

I think that this is indeed possible and depends on how well Josh thinks that Douglas fits into his developing Offense. Personally, I have my long-time bias against UDFA's and 7th rounders being likely to beat out 3rd year players, especially ones that have played well. Of course, this has happened in the past. Edelman is NOT an example. He did not win a WR roster spot. He won a PR roster spot, and was a huge success as a PR, making the team much like Slater (also labeled a WR).

Mike Vrabel on WR DeMario “Pop” Douglas:“I love the person. I love his attitude. I love his spirit. He loves to practice. He loves to play this game. He loves football. That shows.“I think he's gotten better. We’re moving him around different places, and he’s picked up everything that we've asked him to do. The more that he understands, the more we give him. I'm excited to see where he continues to be and continues to grow.”

I said before the year started I liked Douglas and Boutte's chances to improve a little more in year 3 (more Boutte's chances... but still). I don't think he suddenly makes any huge jumps... but even just 50 more or 100 more yards this year compared to last year would be nice to see and i think possible. His play last year IMO has some issues I didn't like. Fixable ones potentially too. So i would hope he's taken another small step up... but while i do think room for improvement is possible, i think he's fairly close to his ceiling already.

Another thing to mention... They are drawing up more plays for Douglas to play outside and asking him to do more of that. His long speed isn't bad at all. But to me this is also a nod to the theory they see Chism as a better slot option and so want to move Douglas around a bit more.

Some of these guys played both ways in high school, played defense, played some special teams beyond returning. I can vividly remember Gunner Olszewski (similar size and athleticism) on back to back plays have a great punt return, then come back on the very next series make a great tackle in punt coverage.

We’ve had WR’s play CB in a pinch, the more you can do the better. Bottom line is if Chism is dominate enough in the slot and contributes on special teams he can earn a spot.

The Patriots don’t have so much WR talent they can turn their back on a good player. We have a bunch of merely good WR talents that are somewhat redundant who contribute nothing on special teams. Baker and Boutte were really the only WR’s who contributed on special teams last year and barely… 6% of snaps. A returner, even a backup provides value, especially if he’s a good WR.

Just to ease your mind I went to the Eastern Washington website, Chism has tackles on his resume, so he clearly played special teams beyond returns, especially as an underclassman.

I suppose I should have done some research myself but that's exactly what I was looking for thanks.

Question 1-Probably Diggs or Douglas.

As for Chism and the 53 my bet is that he makes it barring injury designation. If he’s released he’s gone for good, he’ll never make it to the practice squad.

My predictions are that he makes the 53 and will be their starting slot by week 9. You are welcome to take either as a bet if you want to.

I gave up gambling decades ago.

We disagree. That's fine.

Personally, I think that we are weaker with either Douglas or Chism active.

How can you say they are weaker if they play a guy you have never seen play?

OK
If you're standard is to only post what you are SURE of, then by all means, post only that. I presume that will mean many, many, many fewer posts.

You are perfectly free to speculate that an UDFA might not be weaker than our 3rd rounder. We will all review that analysis and make from it what we will.
