Take Tet off draft board- he does not like watching football/film (title edit)

Matt Light didn’t watch football games, he played the sport because it was his job. I read an article in the Athletic about Travis Hunter a couple weeks ago about how much he loves fishing, he likes football but loves fishing.

Matt Light said he didn't watch film because it messed up his game. He claimed it made him think instead of reacting.

The only position I'd TRULY worry about not watching film is QB. The others...it's a little concerning, but not as egregious.

Absolutely right! When I previously said one doesn't need to love what they do to be good, I didn't say the rest of what I wanted to. Loving what you do, in their case playing ball, will put you over the top. The athleticism with the love of the sport, the drive or even pride, helps immensely. Good example? Someone named Brady

Don't misquote me. I do care if players watch film or not. I am just not going to put much stock in a 21 second video with no context. Unless there is actual proof this guy is not prepared for the game on Saturdays (soon to be Sunday), I am not going to believe these videos. Now if he isn't prepared, then it is an issue.

But either way, this video won't have much bearing. With him being a high first round pick, teams are going to do their research including talking to people in the organization to find out what type of preparation this guy has.

If we do draft him, maybe a guy like Diggs who is heavy into preparation and film study can help him understand the value.

Right he doesn’t watch it alone but at least he watches it with the rest of the receivers, I’m sure his agent will be typing up a follow up message for him to post.

Not to read too much into what he said as hes a twentysomething, sheltered college kid but at least in the video, he comes off as indifferent towards film review and how it can improve his game. In the NFL he'll learn or he won't.

As a prospect, I don't like him because he runs a 4.5 and is considered a 1st rd pick.

He didn't use the word hate. He said he didn't like it. Apparently he doesn't like to watch it by himself but prefers to watch it with the receiver group. Not sure if this means he's more of a group learner.

Some people are just wired like that, they learn better in group settings than self-study.

Sometimes you just happen to come up through systems that didn't prioritize or motivate you to watch film. Believe it or not, I'd wager a large portion of football programs don't properly teach their students/players on how to watch film. If I was simply told "watch film on them" and not really given a map on how to really make the most of that info, I'd probably have the same feelings.

I can't speak for Tet or the programs he's in, but he is a first round candidate with that mentality; that could be a reflection of those programs not incentivizing him to do so.

And if we think "well, me as Steve on a random message board knows it's important, he should!", let's also remember this: the northeast is simply a different kind of sports culture. Its teams reflect that. Its history reflects that in the names we choose to recognize as the greats: all masterminds of their sport. Reminds me of how I was recently listening to Jeff Teague's basketball podcast and the main example for a team that he could think of that actually runs plays, that utilizes X's and O's, was UConn.

It certainly gets to the football character/culture thing that Vrabel indicated he's going to build. It certainly will be looked at if they are thinking about this kid at any point in the draft process.

I get the Gronk thing, but I think he's an exceptional athlete. I think you can tell him and he had exception abilities that you point out, plus he was a freak of an athlete.

His agent is a guy named Rick Spielman from Proactive Sports, and he’s anything but proactive. This report has been out for days and they have done nothing to rebut it. That’s almost criminal malpractice.

You don’t have to love something to excel at it. I cannot count the # of times I hated a job yet was great at it. He could have an excellent work ethic. I would be interested in seeing how his grades were over the years. If he wasn’t coddled/had his classes/tests taken by others (and other ways to cheat the school system) and did well, it may tell us that he’s got a great work ethic. Well this is just what I think…no clinical trials/research done or will be, by me at least. . Making the most out of a situation that’s out of your hands, like being drafted by the browns when wanting to go to the giants for example (why god why?) is so much better for everyone….

When you are talking about competing against the best of the best, and getting paid millions to produce, you better love what you do, and you better be doing everything possible to be great at it. This kid has bust written all over him.
