Take Tet off draft board- he does not like watching football/film (title edit)

Matt Light didn’t watch football games, he played the sport because it was his job. I read an article in the Athletic about Travis Hunter a couple weeks ago about how much he loves fishing, he likes football but loves fishing.

Matt Light said he didn't watch film because it messed up his game. He claimed it made him think instead of reacting.

The only position I'd TRULY worry about not watching film is QB. The others...it's a little concerning, but not as egregious.

@BennyBledsoe "egregious" is such a good damned word. Not only with how you used it, but in general....fantastic fkn word! =D

I have been saying all along he will be drafted in the 20’s
This probably doesn’t change some teams minds and they will find value in him later in the 1st round
It seems like someone he knew filmed this
That’s a dirt bag that would do something like that just to get some view’s

Absolutely right! When I previously said one doesn't need to love what they do to be good, I didn't say the rest of what I wanted to. Loving what you do, in their case playing ball, will put you over the top. The athleticism with the love of the sport, the drive or even pride, helps immensely. Good example? Someone named Brady

I'm not saying Tit, er Tet will be a bust because of lack of love for the game, but I'm saying if he loves it, he would be that much better. I think this goes along the lines of buying in maybe....

Don't misquote me. I do care if players watch film or not. I am just not going to put much stock in a 21 second video with no context. Unless there is actual proof this guy is not prepared for the game on Saturdays (soon to be Sunday), I am not going to believe these videos. Now if he isn't prepared, then it is an issue.

But either way, this video won't have much bearing. With him being a high first round pick, teams are going to do their research including talking to people in the organization to find out what type of preparation this guy has.
I was adding to what you said. Sidenote.....not sure how you misquote someone when you cut and paste what they say.

Sitting on the couch watching the Giants draft Hunter 1 spot before us is gonna hurt. Really like that kid.
I know, If I was on Instagram or any of the others I would send him pictures of me and some buddies deep sea fishing reeling a haul in one day.

To your point hes definitely not being proactive or volunteering to do it. He doesn't see the value.

If we do draft him, maybe a guy like Diggs who is heavy into preparation and film study can help him understand the value.
Right he doesn’t watch it alone but at least he watches it with the rest of the receivers, I’m sure his agent will be typing up a follow up message for him to post.

I am sorry. I thought you were saying I just didn't care if he did any prep work as long as he played on Sunday. My bad.

My point was that I don't know if this video is really what it appears to be. I do care if a player prepares though. But this isn't proof that he doesn't prepare properly for games.

Where are all the WR obsessed who were arguing with me here that him not competing at the combine or pro day didn't matter either?

Somebody should ask him the golden question, "do you like football?"

The only thing that could move him further down my board is if he said he is involved in a dogfighting ring. This kid is a bigger PR nightmare than the new Snow White actress.

Gotta wonder if there are any "independent study addendums" in his contract. I agree with you about the dogfighting thing but I don't think Ookie and Ron Mexico give a ****.

He also said he didn’t watch football games when he’s not playing, no desire, said he goes out side hunts on his property, rides ATV’s and fishes.

So I wouldn’t expect him to improve if his heart isn’t in it.

Did he actually say, "hate"?

Not to read too much into what he said as hes a twentysomething, sheltered college kid but at least in the video, he comes off as indifferent towards film review and how it can improve his game. In the NFL he'll learn or he won't.

As a prospect, I don't like him because he runs a 4.5 and is considered a 1st rd pick.
He didn't use the word hate. He said he didn't like it. Apparently he doesn't like to watch it by himself but prefers to watch it with the receiver group. Not sure if this means he's more of a group learner.

Some people are just wired like that, they learn better in group settings than self-study.

Big if. Are there other guys in the draft who are close to his ability who live in the film room when not working out or practicing? I want those guys first.

Sometimes you just happen to come up through systems that didn't prioritize or motivate you to watch film. Believe it or not, I'd wager a large portion of football programs don't properly teach their students/players on how to watch film. If I was simply told "watch film on them" and not really given a map on how to really make the most of that info, I'd probably have the same feelings.

I can't speak for Tet or the programs he's in, but he is a first round candidate with that mentality; that could be a reflection of those programs not incentivizing him to do so.

And if we think "well, me as Steve on a random message board knows it's important, he should!", let's also remember this: the northeast is simply a different kind of sports culture. Its teams reflect that. Its history reflects that in the names we choose to recognize as the greats: all masterminds of their sport. Reminds me of how I was recently listening to Jeff Teague's basketball podcast and the main example for a team that he could think of that actually runs plays, that utilizes X's and O's, was UConn.

I dunno man. I've been coaching HS football in NH for a while, and we prioritize film study, as do the other teams in the division we are in, and we are not a big school by any stretch. I find it hard to believe that a D1 NCAA program doesn't do it.

It's since come out that video might be older and he may feel differently now. If I was drafting him, I'd certainly find out his feeling on it going forward. If your an NFL team and he's on your draft board as #1 and he doesn't like film doesn't want to do it, that's a problem. There are many guys even at the level he plays at where they've been the best player on the field since they stepped on the grid iron, and haven't had to use film study and have relied on pure athletic ability to be successful. Surely, at the next level, he's going to need to use every tool at his disposal to be successful. He's no longer going to be that much better than every one else. If it's a question mark for your organization that you don't know if he will embrace that fact, does that mean that the guy ranked at #2 or #3 who does use all the tools at his disposal move up the ranking?

It certainly gets to the football character/culture thing that Vrabel indicated he's going to build. It certainly will be looked at if they are thinking about this kid at any point in the draft process.

I indicated that in my post, that I think the northeast is more dedicated to that kind of stuff. It feels more engrained into the culture, just compared to how I see players and programs represented in media as a whole. Your primary account is certainly more knowledgeable than I, though.

And to your point, I'd do the exact same: grill the guy on it. And find a way to do so that doesn't just leave it up to them saying "yes I'll be serious about it" and you taking it as truth. I think with Gronk it was a similar situation, he didn't exactly have a good team visit nor did he display a knack for translating X's/O's. He just is a guy that you can say "do this, don't do this" exactly one time and he'll remember it for life.

I get the Gronk thing, but I think he's an exceptional athlete. I think you can tell him and he had exception abilities that you point out, plus he was a freak of an athlete.

The northeast thing, I dunno man. Texas HS football is another level.

His agent is a guy named Rick Spielman from Proactive Sports, and he’s anything but proactive. This report has been out for days and they have done nothing to rebut it. That’s almost criminal malpractice.

You don’t have to love something to excel at it. I cannot count the # of times I hated a job yet was great at it. He could have an excellent work ethic. I would be interested in seeing how his grades were over the years. If he wasn’t coddled/had his classes/tests taken by others (and other ways to cheat the school system) and did well, it may tell us that he’s got a great work ethic. Well this is just what I think…no clinical trials/research done or will be, by me at least. . Making the most out of a situation that’s out of your hands, like being drafted by the browns when wanting to go to the giants for example (why god why?) is so much better for everyone….

When you are talking about competing against the best of the best, and getting paid millions to produce, you better love what you do, and you better be doing everything possible to be great at it. This kid has bust written all over him.
