This is confusing because it’s being reported as a “6 year extension” even though he already had an additional 4 years left on his current deal. So you’d think he would now have 10 years left on his deal total, but it’s actually just 6. So in reality, it’s a 2 year extension.

What is so incomprehensible about it? The NFL generates enough revenue to pay the players a certain amount. As revenue goes up, players' salaries will increase proportionally.

There are also social equity layers to it that are beyond most of us to process with a restful outcome, related to effort/skill vs. reward. Oh I agree that giving Josh Allen a 2 year, $180 million extension is definitely a mistake but since I am not a Bills fan, I don't see it as a tragic one like you do.

Allen's new contract makes his cap hit a lower percentage than his old deal over the length of time. The last year of this deal, it will be ~15% of the projected cap. Raw APY never really matters to me so I like the percent of the cap.

It's smart because on his prior deal, the one he had an hour ago, his cap hit this season swelled to $44.7 million, next season it went to 62.9 million, and stayed in the 60's for one more season before going back to 50 million. Smart for Allen because for sure he got more guaranteed... it's a raise.

In the beginning of this deal ^ they deferred the majority of his cap until year four, and in year four it only was 30 million. It would have been double that soon.

It's hard to build a well rounded balanced team with one player taking up a quarter of your salary cap annually.

We have to see the final contract. But it also depends how long he plays and at what level. There's probably void years on this deal.

Either way, when he's done they'll probably be staring at a massive dead cap for a season or two, unless they're really lucky with how it ends.

Wouldn't surprise me if the 2029/2030 years ARE void years. That the "guaranteed money" is just them moving the option and roster bonuses to "signing bonus" and being amortized accordingly.

Just to be clear - we are talking about the game where, even if Andrews had caught the 2 point conversion, Allen had 2 minutes and 3 timeouts to just get a field goal to win the game.
