DK Metcalf officially requests a trade (UPDATE: He's a Steeler)

The odds that a 3rd round pick can turn in to a player of anywhere near Metcalf's contribution are about 2%. Assuming he stays healthy, and putting the cap spend aside as a factor (which is a form of denial), he's worth about 10 years worth of 3rd round picks.

1. My issue with Metcalf is doesn't create a lot of separation on his routes.
2. 1st and a 3rd
3. $30m AAV

meh

I think he's physically gifted and everyone falls in love with that. There's a lot of pie in the sky here IMO. He looks like he should be a game changer, and while he's very good, he's not truly elite. He looks like he should be absolutely uncoverable, but his numbers don't bear it out. Swap 4 for 18, pay him $25m x 5, yup I'm in. A first and a third, and $30m per? Seems a little rich.

Metcalf runs a 3 tree route, he’s not an agility guy who can run the entire tree. He’s more David Patten than Troy Brown.

That being said a guy who attacks the defense vertically provides a service, even when he isn’t catching balls himself. His speed forces the opposition to account for him downfield and opens up the underneath routes so guys like Hunter Henry and Demario Douglas can thrive in single coverage.

Metcalf can beat you on 2-3 catches a game, he is also stupid tall, strong and fast… the final component that matters a lot to his success is Drake Maye and Joe Milton can heave it 90 yards. All they’d have to do now is block.

I mean NE does have two 3rds

If a third is all it takes, then I'm sorry they would be idiots not to offer. Based on what is out there, it seems like he probably doesn't want to come to New England, but if we give him $30-$35 million a year, maybe it changes his mind. I know some are saying the Chargers are in the race, but it seems like Davante Adams may want to go to LA as well, so maybe Adams lands there and takes Metcalf off the table for them.

Agree 100%. Elite physical talent. Not a truly elite WR.

Yep. Agree.

I just don't think that's worth a 1st and a 3rd and $30m.

I am going to real annoyed if we end up as one of those teams that is "interested" in everyone meaning the organization makes sure it gets out there that we have interest to appease the fanbase but don't actually pull off any a trade that fills a need.

It's an overpayment IMO, but you probably need to do that to break the ice. To @Wozzy point, his addition makes everyone else better. I'd do that deal.

I think Jefferson is $35 mill a year so putting Metcalf in that category is definitely an overpay but at this point we need to pay that crappy team in a cold climate tax. Metcalf would instantly push the other guys into better positions on the depth chart and be our first guy who can win a one on one matchup since Edelman or Gronk.
