DK Metcalf officially requests a trade (UPDATE: He's a Steeler)

Metcalf reportedly wants to play for a team that can contend right away. No trade can be done unless he agrees to a long term deal. Odds are good the Patriots are not going to land him.

In fairness to DK, this is going to be the case for every player on the market. Nobody wants to go out of their way to play for a losing team. If you can get paid handsomely and play for a contender, why wouldn’t you? That being said, the opportunity to be a catalyst for a winning culture sounds more compelling if the money looks substantially better than anywhere else. I just doubt it gets to that point, so I agree, I don’t expect the Patriots to get him either, much as I’d love for him to play here.

All of those things are true, but I don't think it would move the needle on this team.....this kind of trade makes sense when you are one or two pieces away, it doesn't make sense when the entire roster needs to be rebuilt.

And that is without getting into DK as a player.

While I don't really disagree with you as far as Metcalf making a real difference in winning X amount more games this year. I think he would be a much-needed kickstart to rebuilding the offense that I think could speed up the process to getting us back to winning sooner. The formula for so many of the recent successful young quarterbacks has been to get them a real number one receiver within the first couple of years.

Joe Burrow got Higgins the round after he was taken and then a true number 1 in Chase the next year.
Josh Allen got Stephon Diggs his third year.
Tua Tagovailoa got Waddle his second year and Hill his third.
Justin Herbert had Keenan Allen and Mike Williams already on the roster.
Jalen Hurts got AJ Brown and Devonta Smith within his first two years starting.
Jaden Daniels had Terry McLaurin and now they're kicking the tires on Deebo to see if there's anything left.

I think Metcalf would be the type of addition that seems to help young quarterbacks come out of the gate hot, but I agree he certainly can't be the only big addition. They desperately need to invest in the offensive line and add to the defense as well, but filling glaring needs with established veterans using mid-round picks to supplement some spots on the roster can work if done right.

No team in their right mind would give up a pick for a guy who wasn't going to agree to play for them. Players tank trades all the time. Aiyuk basically did so last year when we allegedly made an offer to SF.

The thing Metcalf could bring that is so valuable to a young qb is swag, physicality, intimidation and a vertical take the topoff threat.

Bengals : Drafted both of them
Bills : Traded for Diggs (1st, 5th, 6th) but he had 3? years left on his deal at the time.
Dolphins: Drafted Waddle, Traded for Hill (1st, 2nd, 4th, 4th, 6th), and then signed him to a big deal.
Eagles: Traded for Brown (1st and 3rd) Drafted Smith.
Commanders: Drafted McLaurin, traded a 5th for Deebo.

So the Trades, Diggs was cost controlled, Hill might have been a top 5 WR at the time of the trade; Brown was going into is contract year; Deebo is washed.

Metcalf is none of those, he is going to require a new BIG contract, he isn't a top 5 WR, and there was no betting on his future, he is what he is.

I think he should be a better receiver than he actually is, he has been pretty productive, but not a top 10 guy, and he is kinda an *******....not sure that the Patriots want him in the lockerroom while rebuilding the team culture.

Draft him 6yrs ago, or pay him now, sure. Both no thank you.

Remember when the Browns somehow landed OBJ who was the big splashy acquisition, which led some other big names going there... and for a while they had a loaded team and made the playoffs.

Boston is a lot nicer than Cleveland and we are an iconic franchise honestly compared to a lot of places like the Titans who managed to land D-Hop and Ridley when they were the cream of the FA crop.

If we can just get one big name through an overpay it could tip the scales and see players wanting to come up here.

Also, this narrative is ridiculous about nobody wanting to live in NE. I visited 40 of 50 US states and the NE region is one of the most gorgeous and has 4 beautiful seasons - I live in the PNW now, but I'd live in Boston in a heartbeat. Much prefer that to being on fire in LA or trying to play football in pads in 110 humidity in florida. These players are so rich if they want sun they can fly to their vacation home in spring anyway. Just my 2 cents.

I think Metcalf is a similar comp to what AJ Brown was if you're comparing stats-wise. Both guys on their first teams hovered around the 1,000 yard mark give or take a 100 yards and both played with mediocre quarterbacks. Brown since getting to Philly has exploded into a top 10 receiver but he wasn't that guy in Tennessee.

To be honest I really don't care about the contract. Overpay him. I really don't care since we have money to spend and the cap is crap anyways and can always be manipulated. What I do care about is getting Drake an alpha dog and pushing this offense from the bottom half of the league to the top half. Getting Metcalf doesn't mean we just stop adding to the receiver room but at least we can slot a guy in there who can be the main option for a couple years.
