Milton being here might allow Johnson to devise some crazy tandem plays involving both maye and Milton .

We are top 3 in terms of desirability and number 1 for Vrabel.

So my guess is it's Johnson as choice 1 and Vrabel as choice 2.
Gotta wonder how appealing Joe Milton is to OC candidates.

Yes Drake is the prize, but an inventive mind could have a lot of fun with Milton in his toolbox.

He could give opposing DCs nightmares.

Another reason I wouldn’t want to trade Milton for less than significant compensation.

It would be a major upset if Johnson went elsewhere. This is the best job on the market.

1. QB to work with
2. Most cap space
3. High draft picks
4. Roster can be built how he wants it as hardly anyone has been paid.

I don't think Josh's system suits Maye's strengths. Also, I wonder if his offense is becoming obsolete in the NFL.
Seems like his offense only truly worked when Brady was his QB. Hard pass on McDaniels

Raiders surprisingly keeping Pierce.
So if we don’t hire Vrabel he could very well end up the Jets HC.
That’s why Kraft will hire Vrabel
Too big a risk if Vrabel goes to the Jets and kicks our ass twice a year
Not saying that would happen just a big risk for Kraft

Because Ohio State and Michigan (and a couple other schools) offered him $6 million to stay.
In all honesty that’s really weird. But I read that it was between ND and USC for Ewers. I could be wrong though.

I have a hard time envisioning a world where the Kraft’s don’t hire Vrabel this offseason. Robert at least will be determined to do so. I wonder if Jonathan will be more open minded to Johnson.

You're assuming that Kraft actually wants him and hasn't already made Vrabel the coach in waiting.

Jags have Balke and Lawrence has been disappointing. Balke is a HUGE negative this coaching cycle and there is more upside to Maye.

Really it's between us and the Bears for Johnson.
Both places there is a GM or whatever Kraft calls it

This interview triggers a natural conflict of interest on the part of the interviewers. Eliot Wolf's job would be seriously in jeopardy if Johnson came here, so what do you think he is going to recommend?

Lots of comments from players on Ben Johnson as an offensive guru

Lions RB Gibbs: "The stuff he comes up with every game is crazy," Gibbs said. "You don't see really stuff like that, only if you're in college. In college, they have all of those explosive plays and stuff basically."
  • Lions WR Jameson Williams: “He’s a mastermind on the offensive side of the ball. And I’m pretty sure he’d find somebody to take care of the defensive side.”
Lions RB Montgomery: Oh yeah, he’s a genius, knows a lot, teaching me a lot,” Montgomery said. “I’ve only been here for a short period of time, but I’ve learned so much about defenses that I hadn’t know, and me being in the league for four years that I’m learning now. Really smart guy, definitely lucky to be able to be in his offense.
  • Lions WR Tim Patrick: “He comes up with things that you don’t really think about, but he’s also open-minded to listen to guys that have been here that have input. He finds a way to make it work. A coach that listens to his players but also puts his own touch on it, that’s hard to find.”
Lions WR St. Brown-praised Johnson’s tireless work ethic and strategic mindset, stating, “I think what they don’t see is the amount of work that he puts into his craft. He’s up dissecting defenses for hours on end. Honestly, I don’t know if the man sleeps.” The thing that Ben does that’s so great is he’s not trying to set up a play during a game, he’s setting it up weeks before.”

Bears QB Caleb Williams: It was fascinating to watch because he had wrinkles for counters and things like that throughout the game," Williams said of Johnson's game plan vs. the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night, via The Athletic. "I think he's obviously done really well. So it would be cool to see how that all goes down."

McDaniels did more with Mac than anyone on the Pats or Jags. McDaniels was also successfully coached Cassell. McDaniels got into the playoffs and won a playoff game with Tebow as the QB, and won 7 games in 2020 with Cam Newton. Working with Cam, Cassell, Mac, and Tebow is somewhat impressive.

Never even though of that.

So Johnson has been super ridiculously successful on offense all this time with the statue of Jared Goff under center. Then he suddenly gets not just ONE tall, mobile, young, rocket armed QB… but TWO?

Dude would suddenly take the league by storm with wacky 2 QB trick plays with 100 variations

Todd Hailey made it to the playoffs with Cassell and Cassell had his best statistical year under Hailey as well.

Cam Newtown was a former MVP at the end of his career.

Mac benefited from a rookie campaign in which DC didn't have enough game film on how to stop him. Once they got enough footage he was ruined. Has happened to plenty of QBs over the years. Either they learn how to improve on their weaknesses or flame out.

That Denver team was coached by Jim Fox that won a playoff game with Tebow. McDaniels went 4-12 his second and last season in Denver

It's easy to get infatuated by Ben Johnson's potential to boost our offense to the top of the league like Detroit has.
But, I have a lot of reservations about another 38 yr old with only experience in 1 of the 3 phases.
He would need to have a very solid elder disciplinarian to be DC / Asst. HC.
Maybe Dennis Allen or Saleh? I'd actually be fine with either being our DC - if they're willing to not chase HC jobs in the next 2 years.

I don't trust Josh. He's been a reported headcase everywhere he's been without Belichick. I don't want him to go nuts and pull a "I coached Tom Brady, so sit down and shut up" stuff with Maye.

I thought he did very well with Matt Cassel and Mac Jones. I'd even argue he did an admiral job the Cam Newton year where there really wasn't much to work with.
Based on his HC opportunities going up in flames when his ego went off the rails, JMD needs someone who can keep him on track to be successful. If he is Vrabel's pick for OC, I think it would be a good pairing that would challenge each other for the betterment of the team. This year feels so much different with Vrabel and Johnson having an identified posse that they would put in place as soon as they joined the team. That is exactly what it the team needs.
