Does anyone think there is a chance Mayo is one and done?

Bedard made a great point yesterday. Usually players are behind a first year HC during the 1st year. It’s the second year that is usually goes to sh*t if there is no improvement.

If they keep Mayo he will be under enormous pressure to deliver and if goes wrong at the beginning of next season everything will turn in even more of a clown show.
“If” it goes wrong…

Mayo intentionally did nothing this year. He stood back, told Thunder he was a “CEO” and didn’t get his hands dirty with any actual coaching or game planning, This allows him to tak no responsibility for anything & just throw his assistant coaches under the bus, the same way he threw BB under the bus & claim he had absolutely nothing to do with the disaster that was this season.

He’ll convince Thunder to do some window dressing, change a few coaches and rinse and repeat next year.

The Pats will be picking in the Top 5 of the draft in perpetuity, until Mayo is fired. He’s a failure as a head coach, and a disgrace as a human being.
Agreed, although I am not sure he’s a bad human being. In fact he seems like he would hold the door and be polite and return shopping carts and maybe even help turtles cross the road.

He just seems to me to epitomize the new generation, with appearances and feeling good about effort without caring about results mattering most. Folks said BB was old school, too old to relate to modern players. Mayo is the antithesis of that. So all those folks should be happy. They got what they asked for.

I’ve been on the record in saying there’s no chance Kraft will fire Mayo. His ego will prevent him from doing it. But after this game, I don’t know…how can he not fire him??

So think this is how he’ll do it. Wolf doesn’t have the power in the organization to fire Mayo. So He’ll actually fire Wolf and bring in some new exec of football ops or some **** like that and let the new guy do the clean out. So then Kraft can distance home from the situation and if the new guy doesn’t make all the right calls and can blame the new guy.
That makes sense. But the new guy has to act fast, staff building and roster building starts immediately and they need the HC on board with it right away.

This sounds pretty accurate. In the end it will be whats best for the organization. Annoying that Kraft is always slithering around instead of actually manning up and demanding excellence fRom his organization.
He demanded excellence when he replaced BB with the current staff.

What more can I say?

They only way Mayo would survive a season like this is he was known for something or what he was capable of. Bill was off to a really bad start in 2000, but we all knew what he was bringing to the table as a defensive mind. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Mayo has no connections around the league for coaches or players which continues to float under the radar.

This is why I firmly believe Mayo will be gone by season's end.
This season? Or 2025?

I think the latter is a no brainer.

“If” it goes wrong…
Good point

If he makes it past Monday we are looking at Eberflus 2.0 I am afraid.

Schedule is soft enough to go 6-11 next season .

OFFENSE IS ON TRACK
With the #1 question answered the Offense is on-track. AVP is doing fine. He is an OK OC who will not be looking for a HC job, a fine OC for the first 4 years of Maye.

With the re-sign of Hooper, the required 2 WR's and two LT's, the Offense will be fine. Yes, that's a lot, but there is plenty of cap money there to help and perhaps a solid draft pick.

BTW, an ignored part of 2024 is that some players were added who should contribute in 2025 and beyond; of course some may be backups. The failure of course was the second round. We added Gibson, Hooper, Maye, Wallace, Robinson, and Bell.

THE DEFENSE
With no replacements and declining performances by all groups (and especially by the coaches), the Defense quickly became one of the worst defenses in the NFL.

Four new top players and the Offense will be fine. The Defense needs more. It needs a new team to replace the Belichick's plus some health, AND a top player in each unit.
Did you get into Aaron’s ayahuasca?

The offense is on track to go from a smoldering dumpster to a full blown hazmat conflagration.

The OL can’t block, time the snap, or even line up in the right place.

The WRs can’t separate, run the right routes, or get past the line to gain on third downs.

The RBs can’t hold on to the ball, find holes, or catch passes.

The OC can’t call plays, bench error repeaters, or agree with HC on who is starting RB.

The OL coach just can’t.

Yeah they’re on the right track for a string for picking first in the draft for years in a row.

I can only assume Mayo is saying the right things but will do the "right" thing Sunday.

They probably aren't even having real practices this week.

Did Flores learn from his Tua crap? Maybe...maybe not. I don't know if I want to find out.
I’d take a year of finding out if Flores learned, over a year of finding out if Mayo can learn!

This is irrelevant if you think you are hiring someone who is still mediocre and will be a problem down the line just because you are desperate. You don't try to fix a mistake with another mistake because you want to do something.

Fire Mayo if you are committed to going all out to get the right guy and think you have a shot to land him. If you already think that is impossible it doesn't matter if you hire someone marginally better.

Because I guarantee you if in 3-5 years the team is stagnant because Vrabel is the same mediocre coach he was on the Titans and you realize you wasted a third of Maye's career because you got desperate, you all would be looking back saying "I would have taken one extra season of Mayo to have a real shot at getting the right guy".

If you already think the Patriots options are "Mayo or settle" then just wait. If you think there's a real shot at a quality candidate, you make the move.
You fire Mayo because he’s bad.

You then look to replace him with a guy who is good. Or at least better. But you’re hoping whoever you hire is a keeper.

You don’t keep the worst coach in the league just because you can’t hire the GOAT HC.

You don't make a move to be mediocre. A HC is a years long commit. You can **** up Maye's entire tenure with the team if you say "well I don't really want Mayo so I'll settle for a few years of mediocre". You either play to win or you wait.

You make the decision when you are sure it is the winning decision, not out of desperation to put lipstick on a pig.
You don’t stick with the worst HC in the league just because you’re not hiring the next GOAT HC.

No... I have no idea how you came to that conclusion.

I want the team to hire the right people and not waste more cycles because they rushed to fill gaps because they were desperate.
So don’t fire bad hires for better hires unless they’re sure to be the greatest hires?

He's double teamed every play now - that's why his production has plummeted. There's literally no one else with pass rushing skills. They trade him, he'll tear it up on any team with even one more pass rusher.
How much did he benefit from having Judon here last year?

I take it this is about White?

I don't think Bill thought he was ready yet, and Matt didn't play too long before he was done for the year.
Personally? I think he's a man child that NEEDS Tough coaching, but could be an outright beast.
Vrabes is probably good for a guy like him.

This season? Or 2025?

I think the latter is a no brainer.
This season. It was reported they had many coaching candidates passed after meeting with Mayo. That right there should've been the first red flag with Bob that this is wasn't a good decision. If they want to improve the coaching staff, Mayo has to go.

Judon was injured for most of the season. White is clearly upset with how he's used. He's not an edge guy and this scheme doesn't fit him. The way he's talking to the media, it sounds like he's going to ask for a trade if changes aren't made with the coaching and scheme.
