I'm just not sure I see it with Vrabel the way others do.
He got the TEN job coming off a 1 year stint as the DC for a 2017 Texans team that ranked last in points allowed during that year.
The Titans in 2016 and 2017 were 9-7 with Mike Mularkey as the head coach. Vrabel took them over and in 2018 and 2019, again went 9-7. In 2019, that was the year they upset us in the WC round and beat BAL in the divisional round before losing to KC in the championship game.
It looked like that was going to be a huge springboard for them. The next year they started 5-0, then went 6-5 the rest of the way to end up at 11-5 and lost in the WC round. In 2020, they started out 8-2 before kind of sputtering out at 4-3 the rest of the way before losing in the WC round again. In 2022, they fell to 7-10 and then 6-11 in 2023. And during that time, there were reports of internal conflict in the organization.
It's not like he took over a bad, rebuilding team like we are and spearheaded a turnaround. He took over a team that was kind of hovering around the playoffs and he helped get them over the hump. They also found a QB on the scrap heap (Tannenhill) who solidified the position for a few years and that gave them a nice little 3-year run of making the playoffs. But only one of those they actually won a game and the thing seemed to be crumbling under Vrabel's watch on the way out. Team was in decline, and they weren't maintaining a good working environment behind the scenes. As Tannenhill was declining they kind of made some weird QB decisions. They bounced around with offensive systems as guys left (LeFluer, Arthur Smith) and he fired Todd Downing after that.
IDK, Mayo looks like a terrible coach so far and Vrabel has had some level of success as a HC so if they make the switch it's not like I'd complain. But just looking high level at Vrabel's TEN tenure, and it doesn't feel to me like he's the right guys for this team. We're a bad team that needs to be coached up all over and put in place a quality offensive support system for a QB. Vrabel's success came on a team on the cusp of the playoffs that found a vet stop gap QB and went with a few different offensive system stints to just be passable enough on that end to make the playoffs, where they only actually had success in 1 run. And once that short run of competitiveness was over and they needed to do some level of retooling/rebuilding, Vrabel didn't seem to perform well and didn't maintain his relationships behind the scenes. It feels like a very bad fit for where we are, IMO.
