Does anyone think there is a chance Mayo is one and done?

I do not know about DEI but can you name another head coach who has never been a coordinator or head coach at any level, has no coaching contacts throughout the league and was a business development VP for an insurance company after his playing days before he was hired
Its his lack of experience and qualifications at issue not his color
This is not about race

Jeff Saturday was just named.

I mean at some point you have to start somewhere. Him being a 1st time coach isn't the problem. Again everyone has to start somewhere, he just doesn't seem ready for the "big stage" yet.

Vrabel seemed like such an obvious choice to take over: I’m not sure how or why Mayo leapfrogged everybody else so easily with almost no high level coaching experience . They didn’t do him any favors in the long run

Watching the Lions, they have so much talent on this offense that instead of going after BEN Johnson we should go after their GM.

Jokes apart, this OL is so good it allows Ben to basically do anything he wants. I'm afraid, in case theres some mutual interest between the Pats and him and they strike a deal, that with a OL like ours still to be built (because the current I don't even have words to describe) , he couldn't be the same offensive mastermind he is in Detroit.

Nah, they aren't that smart. Bob simply shot himself in both feet with a bazooka putting "head coach successor" in Mayo's contract. A monumental miscalculation.

When Vrabel came in for his Pats Hall of Fame induction during Tennessee's bye week last season, he sat with Kraft in his private box during the second half. I thought for sure he was next in line.
That’s weird right? I thought the same thing.

It felt like when they dumped Bill and Vrabel got dumped at the same time, the stars really aligned to bring in Vrabel, but Jerod might’ve held Kraft’s feet to the fire… “Come on dad, I mean Thunder, you PROMISED me you’d give me the job!!! You SAID!!!!” That plus Jerod’s $10M buyout he would be owed if he WASN’T promoted, plus whatever Vrabel would have to be paid, plus paying Bill $25M+ for the final year of his deal, combined to make Kraft say “alright fine, I did promise, you can go do it”.

Guessing Mayo’s per year rate is.. $5M a year? Or so? So that means Kraft was on the hook for around $30M total to HCs in 2024 instead of the $25M+$10M+$15M or so ($50M total) he would’ve had to pay if he didn’t choose Mayo and picked Vrabel instead. Hefty. Plus a whole staff…

So he gives Mayo a shot, it doesn’t work out. Now in 2025 he can go back to Vrabel for that ~$15M, plus the ~$5M he owes Mayo for 2025 - Bill’s deal is off the books, so Kraft’s total head coaching salary owed drops to $20M. Which is good since he will need to pay some guaranteed cash to players in 2025 too.

Now that I think about it… could Kraft have asked Vrabel to not rush out and take a new job in 2024? Stay a free agent until 2025 just in case Mayo doesn’t work out? So Vrabel goes and gets a little “consultant” job with the Browns that is only written up for a few months. I don’t think he even interviewed anywhere last year. Hmm…

At some point, I'm not sure when, Bob Kraft crossed over from competent NFL franchise owner to addled old man. His infatuation with Mayo was/is purely emotion-driven illogic, which Mayo took advantage of.

I dunno about your conspiracy idea. Vrabel did interview for other 2024 HC jobs.

Yeah I just looked that up. Falcons and Chargers. Does debunk that small piece of it, though I’m just spitballing.

Yes, but it’s not as simple as he gets to do it over. Kraft has to decide he HAS to get rid of Mayo, which he doesn’t want to do for reasons of money and ego. That’s not going to be an easy decision for him. And I doubt he’s going to do it after a single season.
Rex Ryan is getting a do-over.

Obviously they thought he'd be a better coach than he is.

That is the key. How did this happen? No contacts, no network, no experience, etc., yet the chosen one. A huge management mistake, and a very basic mistake that a young rookie owner would make. Obviously RK is not a rookie owner. The simple reason is usually the correct reason. Most likely RK has lost it. I think @Tunescribe said "addled". That is probably right.

No chance, Vrabel's going to do what's best for him and I'm sure he had no idea Mayo wouldn't work out. You're really twisting these ideas in your head to make sense of everything. I always thought you were more level headed and logical. If they fire Mayo and hire Vrabel, it's not some grand plan, it just might work out that way.

How about Spagnolo from KC as head coach. The guy has been phenomenal as DC at KC and he has connections everywhere.
He would bring a good OC with him.
He wants another HC opportunity

I wouldn't get hung up on Vrabel either, they might be able to do better although Vrabel would be a big upgrade. They should open up the search.

That is a great candidate. Great defensive mind. He would have to work with an OC and GM. I assume he would know guys. Smart guys usually know other smart guys.

Get the QB coach of BUCS as OC under Vrabel . He is a New England guy I believe Rhode Island .

Vrabel as coach and possibly someone from Vikings or chargers team as DC or some old school nfl- college DC . Bring back Scott Pioli / Dinitroff as front office head honcho. Run it back again.

Retain AVP as QB coach . Doubt he gets a better offer elsewhere. He is not a play caller but could be a QB savant.

Spagnolo is 65 years old and is 11-41 as a head coach. Great DC but no thank you as a head coach.

I’m just spitballing stuff for fun dude. What else is there to talk about with this team this week besides “fire Mayo!!!” lol, trying to mix it up
