Surprised no one has mentioned Purdue's LT Marcus Mbow yet.

I've been watching him all year.

I have no idea what his athletic assets are but I do know that every weekend, he stones pass rushers who will be making money in the NFL.

He just handles everyone who comes at him. Penn State has 2 DEs who will go in the first few rounds, and he had absolutely no trouble with them at all.

Now I know he plays on the worst team in Purdue history, but he may drop because of it.

I like this kid a lot.

Yep. And taking other teams "Turd's" and trying to polish them, is still just polishing turd's. They need to stop messing around and acquire through primarily the Draft, and then Free Agency, young and proven talent (in FA) and solid (and hopefully high upside) players in the Draft.

Yes, both are now seen as 6-10 picks. Although that could change come the pre draft testing.

He's been receiving late 2nd-/early 3rd-round buzz; but if he passes his medical exam at the combine (and if his arm length measures at least 33"+) then he should find himself squarely in the late 1st-/early 2nd-round conversation...

Most scouts are stating the Mbow is more suited to OG (RG) than OT. We can't afford to invest in another OG, let alone that high in the draft. I wouldn't mind snagging Ratledge as an OG or Foster as a Center (who can also play OG) somewhere else in the draft.

- 2,546 snaps at LT
- 1,593 pass plays
- 3 sacks allowed (0.2%), so about 1 sack allowed every 500 pass plays, roughly 1 every 10 games

Those are insane numbers for someone playing in the SEC.

The sad fact here, however, is that if his arms are less than 33 inches, he will JIMHO have a hard time making it at OT in the NFL. Above 33 inches and I think he’ll be top 15 and possibly top 10. I’m hoping for the best for the kid, irrespective of what happens on measurables, but unless his arms length surpasses the scuttlebutt I would not feel great about him as a top 5 pick for the Pats.

The same is true for Banks whose numbers aren’t as gaudy as Campbell’s.

We are all going to go crazy watching the flaws emerge for all of the currently projected top draft prospects. As much as I’ve criticized Wolf and Groh on this forum, I don’t envy them here, needing to hit this next draft out of the park with “short bats.”

Good OL coaching helps probably more than any other position group. Jury still out if the Patriots have that guy. I tend to think no. He’s too detailed and doesn’t keep it simple.

Well that is the rub, everyone is expecting he'll probably be under 33....if his arms were above that he would be a no questions top 5 pick (Talent + position importance)....as he is seen now Campbell is seen as a long term NFL player, just not sure what position yet.....Banks' stock is even more volatile at the moment because scouts are currently unsure if he can play LT but they are also uncertain if he can play LG.

Exactly where are you seeing that “everyone expects” Campbell’s arm length to be <33”? It may be true but so far all I’ve seen are rumors, such as the alleged “Hula Bowl scout” who “heard there were measurements” or some such.

I’m on the record here in this forum that I wouldn’t want the Pats to use a top 5 pick on Campbell or Banks or anyone else if it is verified that their arm length or other measurable are below standard AND there is a clearly better choice available in their slot. That goes for everyone rated highly right now. For example I’m concerned that 6’5” not especially fast Tet McMillen will be 6’3” not especially fast Tet McMillen, or that 6’3” 260 lb Abdul Carter will be 6’2” 240 lb Abdul Carter.

I am not convinced that there are any “bulletproof” prospects in this draft, including Hunter who I view as the best prospect. One thing I am convinced about, however, based on what I’ve seen each of the past 5 or more years, there will be at least 5 OL taken in the 1st round and that will include Campbell and Banks, probably Simmons and Ersery too, and maybe Milan also, unless something radical happens to those two players and not just <33” arm measurements.

One other thing: if we were guaranteed that Campbell or Banks would be on the Larry Allen level, we’d sign up for that without question (he’s the best OL I ever saw not named Hannah or Munoz). Larry Allen was 6’3” tall and though I can’t find his arm length number I’d be unsurprised if they were <33”. The Pats need as many dominant players as they can get irrespective of position, even OG.

Well the arm length measurement is specifically a tackle, LT, number.... not a guard one so it doesn't apply to Allen. It deals specifically with getting hands on fast/powerful edge rushers before they can get hands on you.

I agree that the Pats need talent regardless of position, but it is also a matter of optimizing the assesses that you have....top 5 on a LG when you need talent all over the place is crazy. There wasn't a single IOL drafted in the 1st round last year; now this year, in a much weaker draft, I'm sure there will be some greater variance to players/positions drafted, but I would be shocked to have IOL in the top half of the draft. Great guards/Centers can just be found later.

I've read there are less than 5 Blue Chip prospects in this draft, we just need to come away with one of them.

If Campbell’s arms are 33 plus both him and Davis will be gone in Top 10
OT gets over drafted.
They are like QB’s. If you want a good one then you have to draft one. They rarely become FA’s

OK good reply, I’m in general agreement with you but thought maybe you had come across something more definitive about the arm length measurement.

Allen did in fact play some tackle and was excellent there but that was quite a while ago and perhaps he wouldn’t be as good at tackle in this day and age. I’m certainly not suggesting that either Campbell or Banks is the next Larry Allen, I just wanted to make the point about the need for impact which you clearly understand.

If Campbell has adequate arm length I’d want him over everyone other than Hunter. If he doesn’t but Banks does I’d want Banks over everyone but Hunter, McMillen, and maybe Johnson (assuming no similar red flags with those guys). I really line Graham, Carter. and Jeanty a lot too.

This is just based on my own (admittedly no expert) observations watching these guys play. I would have Starks here if I was confident he could play FS. Of course he almost certainly can cover better than Dugger. There’s about 10 other guys I’d mention here as well. Plenty of potentially excellent players even if this draft does not have as great of a top 10 as last year.

The listing for Blue Chips is short in this draft, generally some version of Hunter, Johnson, Graham, Carter, Jeanty.....that is about it. And it is highly likely at 3 we can pick any of them.

I'm out on McMillen in the first half of the draft, I just see him as a possession guy, he isn't going to raise the floor for the rest of our receiving room.

I wish the LTs showed up better this year, and didn't have so many questions....I don't need a 10 year all pro, I'd be happy with a top 16 guy for 10 years. At the moment I'm out on Banks, I think Campbell is the better LT, and he has the Guard fall back, I don't think Banks can play inside. Banks is strictly a LT, with question marks, that is a very risky pick high.

I'm not really interested in Hunter as a full time CB, I would need him to dedicate himself to WR.....he is just so explosive in the short area that he gets open in a way our WRs dont, and he is always looking to score.... I hate watching most WR highlights, it just always seems like they are wide open because of scheme....it wasn't that way in alot of what I've seen from Hunter, he is getting away from press at the line, he loses CBs on the break, he finds holes in zone. All for a guy that is averaging over 100 snaps per game.
