Does anyone think there is a chance Mayo is one and done?

I thought this was a good conversation (well until the end) and am glad @Ian transcribed it: TRANSCRIPT: Boston Herald's Andrew Callahan on 98.5 Talking About the Future of the Patriots Coaches

Indirectly, Mayo has said that he's thinking about coach changes this week, to be ready for the end of the season.

Here's some of the quotes from Andrew Callahan who says he doesn't think Mayo is getting fired, but if not, who else might be in trouble:
Hughes the WR coach could be the guy out. Also there was talk about giving covington some support with Mayo maybe bringing in a veteran coach in the defense. Wich should not have to happen Brian, pelligrino, Mayo, covington have all been here and coach the defense. Hightower is the only new position coach.

Yeah, an assistant DC to help Covington be able to adjust on the fly could be a good thing.

Or if the HC had called defensive plays before, he can take over and help out ? This hands off CEO who only is incharge of timeouts and challenges can be more useful

I favored Jefferson over Hughes for WR coach but not strongly. Anyone but Troy seemed like the way to go. Hughes, despite all his coaching experience, doesn't seem to be getting anyone but Boutte trending in the right direction. Would like to be a fly on the wall to see why it's not working.

So Mayo perceives that Covington is in over his head and thinks an outside veteran D coach might help? Mayo can't find time away from practicing his sideline lawn sign routine to actually pitch in?

Almost like hiring someone to teach Covington, but putting him under Covington. I'm not sure someone like that is out there and willing to accept that arrangement. It's basically what they wanted Steve for.

They wouldn't have the nerve to ask SB to come back, would they? That would be a panic move.

As Curran mentioned on NBC sports Boston yesterday. He said Mayo's sort of like how bill was last few seasons were he can't focus on just one part of the ball like he wants. Wich is an oxymoron becuase AVP supposed to the head coach of the offense. This defense is down right disappointment.

Maybe like a McAdoo for the defense? I'm sure there's someone out there.

Fwiw Mayo harps extensively about it being a larger than life priority for him. It's not what we want to talk about on a football forum but, well, the HC openly says it's a priority on how he runs the team. It's a catch 22 for forum rules.

When the coach has explicitly stated that their political priorities influence their management of the team, then discussing the team's performance or decisions inevitably touches on those political factors.

This creates a paradox: members are expected to avoid discussing politics while also trying to analyze or critique decisions that are explicitly political.

TLDR: sucks to be a mod these days.

If people want to discuss politics in football then go to a political forum to do it. The Patriots are a football team, not a political organization, and I guarantee that if people start injecting politics into their football posts then things are going to get really ugly around here. I’ll stay quiet for a couple a couple of ******* posts, but if it goes beyond that then I’m going to let them know exactly what I think of their politics. This place had a political forum and things got really really ugly as a result of it, that’s why it’s gone. Keep the ****ing politics out of here!

If the current narrative is “Mayo is probably safe, but several of his assistants will be toast” now, then I’m curious what the narrative will be when they lose 4 more straight games and get blown out by LA and Buffalo at home to finish the season.

I think we need to prepare ourselves that Maye is making the team look just good enough to Kraft that he probably thinks that Mayo can make the changes necessary on defense during the offseason so they can be competitive next year.

I don’t think Mayo wants to fire Covington, which is probably a mistake. But maybe he brings in someone to work in tandem with Covington like Steve B. worked with Mayo?

Absolute loser take by Mayo in his Curran sit down and already referencing next year for his development. Are there not more games left this season?

The issue is that Steve B was the real DC and Mayo was the locker room guy. So finding a “Steve B” equivalent for Covington just means finding an actual DC who will do the job of a DC without the title while another guy has the title but can’t do the job. Who is going to do that who is worth their salt?

Well, and add into that the further wrinkle that it has to be someone Mayo knows because his network of coaches is really limited. So, Matt Patricia it is!

The defensive side of the ball should have never been an issue. From the looks of things week 1 I thought they would be a sound unit. Boy was I wrong it is inexplicable how 5 guys that were entrenched in the BB tree allow the defense to get this bad. I understand the roster on the defensive side isn't much outside of gonzo, Barmore, peppers. But these guys should have all gotten better they have worsened each game.
