Maybe it takes more than a year however he should have done more that just the 'Maye' pick. He did nothing else. Even if we could not attract FA's, his draft should have been much better. Everyone says the roster was terrible and the cupboard was bare. His draft should have knocked it out of the park. There is not one draft person except for Maye that I am excited about. A couple of them might make a second year leap but I am not holding my breath. If we have another draft and free agency like this last one then the results are going to be the same as this year . I have seen zero improvement from last year, in fact the team is overall worse than last year !!!
It's weird because he's made mistakes but it's also tough to pin everything on him.
-He did in fact hit on the position he most needed to hit on. There was enough debate that we should trade down or get a top end lineman or generational WR. Maye was probably the safer move, but it wasn't the lay up people said.
-free agency was thrown through a loop when the cap went up as much as it did. There were a lot of talented players expected to be on the market and be within range of the Patriots that ended up staying with their teams. Yes there were some areas we could have maybe made a play for guys who could have been marginal improvements. But let's be real, a lot of fans here saw our cap space and were convinced we were going to make a big haul and that died the minute the cap increased.
-At that point, yeah there was a sensible argument to be made that just pushing it to next year because the situation wasn't as good was a more prudent move than giving out longer contracts when we were still rebuilding.
-On the downside, the Polk pick is a ****ing disaster and wasted a very high pick while going against the grain of what the consensus move was.
-Major positions of need were not really addressed at all when they probably should have overextended a bit. Tbf, it seems like we did on WR and players just didn't want to come here or had a preferred location elsewhere.
On both Wolf and Mayo, I'm kind of in the camp of "they inherited a bad situation, this clearly isn't a roster any of them feels is fully made or ready to make a run" they probably should get another year to show they are heading in the right direction before we go full Jets and restart from scratch.
