Does anyone think there is a chance Mayo is one and done?

I haven’t watched the Super Bowl for years if the Pats were not in it, and it wasn’t sour grapes.

The product was losing it’s appeal.
Speaking for myself, the product is not as appealing because the team I follow is bad. Watching other teams has gone from assessing a playoff opponent or a demonstration why I was lucky to be a Pats fan to a stark reminder of how far the team is away from being good. That perspective takes some of the enjoyment of watching.

Well, wanting it and knowing how to get it are two different things. If he thinks he's on the path to his next SB then he's going to be disappointed.
I like seeing Kraft getting a reality check, I just don’t like us fans being dragged along since we already know how the first and second dynasties happened, and who made them happen, and who was just along for the ride.

For those making the argument that Belichick was given a 2nd year after having a bad team, I looked up the numbers.

Average margin of defeat, 2000 Patriots= 8.27 pts
Average margin of defeat, 2024 Patriots= 12.22 pts

Big difference.
Also remember that Kraft is now in his 80s vs being in his late 50's. The clock is ticking on his life. If the team keeps playing this way, I think Mayo is gone at the end of the year.
1999 Patriots = 6.63 pts
2023 Patriots = 11.15 pts

So compared to the year before, not much of a difference.

Mayo will convince Robert that he needs another year with a better oline more money on WRs and a second year from Drake.

Meanwhile we see Ben Johnson go to the Raiders, Vrabel to the Jets, Flores to the Jaguars, Kellen Moore to the Bears.

Belichick to the Cowboys

My only solace this year is the fact that Drake Maye looks like he has the potential to be the real deal. My main concern, on the other hand, is that he develops Superman-itis due to the fact that he is basically the only one on offense with a pulse. The quicker they surround him with talent, the quicker he will develop. The offseason agenda has to be: first-round tackle, starting-caliber (at minimum) guard in free agency, and sign/trade for a top-tier receiver.

That is very real concern. For all of the talk about Peyton Manning's development one could argue that for most of his career his Achilles heel was trying to do too much on his own, especially at the end of games. Maye seems to be very aware of his mistakes so far, he may lose his perspective if he doesn't get help next year.

I think R1 has to be LT, R2 has to be Center, FA has to be RT (sign an older LT being allowed to walk and switch him to RT to extend his career), and sign/trade for a top-tier WR plus an older WR like Cooks, Cooper, Allen ,etc. Maybe 2 older WR guys since they get hurt easily.

If one of Strange, Robinson, Sow, or J Andrews can shine in 2025, our OL would be wholly improved. Can't depend on 2 of the above 4 improving.

I was severely doubting Kraft parting with Mayo after 1 season, but this story about the Krafts looking for outside coaching for the QB (and it was very specific reporting that it is THE KRAFTS doing this, not anyone on staff now) makes me reconsider. It does seem a little bit like he is not really sold on the current product and is putting his feelers out there early so he knows what to look for when January comes. Also makes guys like Johnson, etc aware that the position could potentially be available.

I do also wonder what this means for the front office.
I firmly believe there will be a coaching adjustment on the defense. The defense is in Mayo's wheel house, the continued continuity was there with the coaches Brian, pelligrino, covington. Bringing in a Steve wilks would be great for Mayo and the defense.

I think they should consider it, because there are some troubling signs.

That being said, I think the fand and media are going overboard with over analyzing every sentence out of the guy's mouth and discounting how truly terrible the roster is. They took one of the worst teams in the NFL and made the conscious choice to roll over pretty much all of their cap space to next year. What did people expect? This team sucks, not sure how anyone expected the record to show otherwise. And despite all the overanalyzing of every sentence he says, there's really no indication he's rubbing the locker room the wrong way with guys speaking out against him. Not even anonymous rumblings. And for all the *****ing and moaning because guys seem "light" even in a game like yesterday where they got blown out early they played better in the 2nd half so it's not like they're rolling over - they just aren't very good.

The in-game management has been concerning and it doesn't feel like too many players are getting better. Those are the troubling signs for me. But if they actually liked him as a head coaching candidate last year and weren't just making a move to make a move after BB, then I doubt anything they've seen will sour them that much on him to fire him after 1 year.
In another locked thread you wrote:
Roster isn't in a spot to compete so win total won't be the best barometer IMO. To evaluate the coaching staff, I will be looking for:

1) Do the schemes on both sides of the ball seem cohesive and make sense?
2) Are young players developing over the course of the year?
3) Does the locker room seem unified and focused throughout the year?
4) Do the in-game management strategies make sense?
5) Does the team play with a competitive spirit and mindset each game?
6) Are there signs of good in-game and week to week adjustments?
7) Does the team play disciplined football (i.e. keeping mental composure, avoiding stupid penalties, knowing the intricacies of the rules, etc.)?
I’m curious how you grade them on these criteria now that the season is winding down. You could create a new post about it so it doesn’t get buried in the noise Anyway just curious what you think

I just ran across this post from HugePatsFan

"Roster isn't in a spot to compete so win total won't be the best barometer IMO."

I'm sick of hearing about how terrible the roster is. Even with the lousy coaching and lousy game management they almost stumbled their way to 2 or 3 more wins. The OL and DL need some infusion and need to remain healthy. Team Kumbayah is tiresome. Bring in a real coach. Obviously, I can't have Bill back, so give me Flores or Vrabel. Kick some butt, show some football smarts. Please remind Kraft why he brought BB in and gave him authority. It was to take the owner meddling out of the scenario. It worked until Kraft started meddling and then it didn't. I won't get better until he goes back to his couch.

I don’t like the idea of changing coaches a year into their tenure, but I do concede that there are signs that Mayo isn’t doing a good job. The first is the failure to take responsibility for their play, and trying to deflect it onto other. The second is the penalties. Overall I think there are people here who have made strong arguments that the coaching staff isn’t doing a good job, and I think Upstatets post about Jones and Duggar is a good example of that. The drop off in the play of the defense, especially since Maye took over at QB and the offense is doing better, is a good example of this. And the penalties should have been cleaned up by now, and instead are derailing them every week. So I won’t be arguing against letting them go at the end of the season. Wolf is another story altogether, and if they let him go I’m going to be seriously pissed off, and I’m going to lose faith completely in the ability of the Kraft’s to hire a management team that can turn them into a contender. Wolf inherited Belichick’s team, and Kraft’s coach, neither of which were any good, and expecting any GM to turn that around in 6 months is idiotic.
Please name 3 good picks Wolfe has decided to acquire? I'll wait. How about 2, humor me. Any track record? 2 coaches are gone in the NFL already.. Millions of dollars where wasted or not used. He could not acquire the top talent. It's a bottom line business. We showed them the money and they still didn't show up. Didn't get it done, simple. Any reason he will in the future no..anyway I am prejudice, when he said he was going to convert a jag from a right tackle to left he was done in my book!

It takes more than one year for a GM to put his stamp on the team. This team is still mostly Belichick's.
Regardless of what anyone thinks about his performance, this is now Wolf's team. NFL rosters turn over 40-45% per year so there is not as much carryover as in other sports. Many of the BB players were resigned by Wolf so they are now his players. While I agree that it will take a couple of years to really learn their jobs and try not to get frustrated by the growing pains, I am extremely disappointed that leadership continues to blame the previous regime for everything. Until Wolf and Mayo take accountability for the product on the field we should not expect the players to be accountable.

It’s a loser attitude for sure, and shows the current players they are not valued nor in the long term plans.
Incredibly stale and stagnant Visiion.
This team is going to be mediocre to bad til they clean house.
Or Mayo learns how to develop players, make in game adjustments, game prep, discipline, earn respect. If I was the owner he would of been fired after the soft comment.
