Defense is the biggest disappointment in 2024...

Next season is where everyone is on the clock ??. I fully expect the team to invest in the offseason and defense. If the coaching is still problematic then I think we see changes.

This is the standard answer, but certain mistakes shouldn't be ignored. Why waste another year of Maye?

1) The wind in OT
2) calling his players soft, then backing weakly off the comment
3) Not knowing Marcus Jones played offense.

Seriously these are errors that are not excused for inexperience. A Pop Warner level coach shouldn't make mistakes like these.

I agree. It all starts with the QB who can set the tone for the rest of the team. If the QB can put drives together and score points, it can help a less talented defense not play on ice skates and play more downhill. When the offense doesn't score, it exposes a bad defense.

100% this. This is the first year I've been disinterested in a Patriots teams since I've followed them in the mid 90's. Maye has made it interesting.

I agree. It's amazing that Bob Kraft didn't think Bill Belichick was ready to be a HC again after the 1996 season, but he thought Mayo was this season? I know it's going to be tough for Bob to do this, but he's going to have to have the tough meeting with Mayo and let him go. Mayo wasn't ready which isn't his fault he was offered the job which we'd all take.
I don't think Bob will fire Mayo this off season. His ego will get in the way of what is best for the team, Maybe after 2-3 years but I fear we are stuck with him for at least another year. I am not used to seeing a head coach for the Patriots stand on the sideline during games doing nothing , he has admitted that he does not get involved in game plans !!!! That really stunned me when he said that .

Yeah I just posted a video of Albert Breer quoting Mayo saying he wants to be a "walk around HC" and "empower" his assistant coaches which especially doesn't make sense on the defensive side of the ball.

I will be very bummed if Mayo returns and Ben Johnson gets a HC gig elsewhere. I think Maye would be a very attractive piece to work with.

He's had more funny soundbites like "we could've lost all these games", "Stacy James told me to" and the latest "we were in control of the game".

I see your point. But it's the reality of where the organization is right now. Untangling of everything from Bill, and setting up the new regime. This season was always about the QB. Yeah I agree lots of coaching gaffes this season. The roster is what's also letting Drake down.
WR'S dropping passes, running wrong routes, poor spacing. The defense not being able to stop absolutely anything an offense presents.

I don't know what Johnson will present As a HC as being a coordinator is a different animal than running the show. But I know that he would be phenomenal as an OC for Drake. The defense side is Mayo's wheelhouse.. wich I understand the key losses there.. but they should be getting the coaching to be better it's puzzling to me. Here's a guy that's been nicknamed mini bill

Agreed there. Drake needs top notch coaching he's getting that in his development but needs that from his HC on field, situational and just general awareness is what is badly needed.

I think AVP or McAdoo or the QB coach or all three have done a great job with Maye's footwork, recognition, commanding the huddle, etc.

But the play calling and in game startegy are poor, so keep AVP as a QB coach, but we need a new OC.

Yes, Macadoo is supposed the assistant coach to mayo.. never heard the guy say one word. Maybe he's the earnnie Adams who knows ???. But the development of maye has prolonged alot of jobs for the staff.

Once again you interject Brady in to this. I have always been a fan of Brady's but I do not think he walks on water like some do over here. By the same token I have always been a fan of Bill's and he certainly does not walk on water either. I do however believe that Bill's defense took a nose dive from 2022 and that in large part was due to an incompetent offense. No defense, no matter how good they are cannot play to its full potential if game after game the o keeps getting 3 and outs. You say QB is the most important position ( as that Brady was more important to this team than BB ) so why are we giving Mac a pass on his crappy play ? The defense was average to start with last year and they got worse because of the offense. There is just so much a coach can do. Inspite of their crappy play, I always saw Bill talking to the team on the sidelines, coaching them to the last second. Mayo does none of that and to get back on topic, he is a terrible coach and his defense is worse than any defense Bill put together with the exception of maybe 2002.
Well jones is not here anymore and the defense looks worse so at some point that’s on the players we have. Saying the defense sucks because of the offense is just making excuses for them. If they’re good enough they’re good enough.

My take on Mayo is he is a green rookie coach and still looks like a green rookie coach. At this point I’m still not seeing anything that makes me sold on him as our long term coach.

I still hope to see some improvement with the on-field product at least by end of season or a lot of questions will have to be asked about whether he and/or his staff have earned another season.
