Defense is the biggest disappointment in 2024...

The rest is history filled with leaks by the team on how great Mayo was behind the scenes whenever the defense had a good game, and his name fully redacted any time there was anything negative to be said about the team.

It's extremely hard for me to root for this guy because everything points to Kraft being played like a fiddle and we the fans are the biggest losers in all this.
Corporate kiss ass / Empty suit

He's going to get at least one more year IMO.
Hope he's a fast learner.

This season even with all the changes on the coaching staff, rookie QB most of us thought the defense would be sound.

Trading judon, Barmore's health ,peppers legal situation, and Dugger underperforming all have effects. However even with 3rd string guys this defense should still be at least middling. What is Covington asking these guys to do? The Rams game made me realize that coaching, and match ups have been a problem all season. Can it get better? sure but not this season! However this defense has been the biggest disappointment to me this season. Save for gonzo and Barmore feels like the defense needs injection of talent on all levels.

what do you fellow posters think?
I expected it.
You took away the brains of the defense.
The defense succeeded by being a game plan, role player, play as a team unit that hid weaknesses
Players were subtracted and no one added to replace them is worth a dime.
The front office bought into the “don’t worry the defense is always fine” line without recognizing those things.

That is why I hope we lose out I don't think the Krafts stick with Mayo if we don't win a couple of more games. That's the gauge Five or Six games if we lose out we should be First in line for Ben Johnson - Kliff K or Bobby Slowik. That said I don't see too many wins on the remaining schedule unless our WR's play light out: not holding my breath.
This year has been really tough for me. I’ve loved game day for 50 years and watch every play of every game on the edge of my seat rooting for wins.
But this year I have honestly been conflicted by the fact that I’m afraid if they get lucky and steal some wins, it might mean they convince themselves that this abysmal offseason was a good plan and a step in the right direction.
Ive realized how miserable the people who root for losses to get a higher draft pick must be.

All I KNOW, is Shawn Springs had 12 years EXP B4 he came here, and said of Bill: "He's like a brain on legs"
NOONE is perfect.

what happened to the bears game defense, is chicago that bad?
Both of Chicago's starting tackles were out with knee injuries for that game.

The end result for the Bears' offense was about what one would expect in that scenario.

In a league obsessed with offense, where defense coaches rarely get an opportunity to be HC, it's a complete dereliction of duty for the Krafts to hire a head coach from the defensive side of the ball that can't actually coach a defense.

Mayo can't coach the O, he can't coach the D. He has no command over the game & makes boneheaded decisions every week that costs his team points. He adds absolutely no value & has no business being head coach.

Bob Kraft should be embarrassed & humiliated that he got conned into turning over his greatest asset to an unqualified DEI fraud of a HC who only excels at kissing Thundercats ass. His franchise is a joke & will be irrelevant until they hire a real HC.

Agree.

Wolf as GM is the biggest disappointment.
Really? He drafted Maye despite the media pleading with him to trade down, rather than roll the dice on an unproven QB, with "bad feet" (lol). He hired AVP & McAdoo, who have the offense improving, pretty significantly every week.

The issue with this team is with Jerrod "Checkers" Mayo, Covington & the Defense that can't stop the run & somehow gets worse every week. It makes me sick that the Krafts went out and promoted a LB coach to HC when every other team in the league is looking to hire the next brilliant offensive coach. If you are promoting a Defensive coach in this league, he better be a F'n defensive genius & Checkers is anything but. I've never seen a NFL team make fewer in game adjustments.

Mayo is a complete & total fraud. I rue the day he led a prayer group in Israel that led the senile Bob Kraft to decide he had found his next great HC. RK needs to hand the team over to Jonathan ASAP!

Defense is 100% the biggest disappointment. Things have been bad, horrible at times with the offense but that was to be expected to a certain degree. The defense was suppose to be at least average. If we could consistently stop the run, we would be in playoff contention RIGHT now.

Tavai is exposed without Bentley. Bentley has never been a favorite of mine but the guy is consistent. Godchaux demanded more money for what??? I thought way overpaid for Duggar but now I KNOW we overpaid. Aside from Jennings, White, and Barmore the entire front seven could be replaced with udfa and have the same or better results.

The Scatback didn't hire Mayo because he's senile or a soft touch for Mayo's BS. He hired him for political reasons, thinking it would help him get the thing he wants most:

Until he gets the HOF election he lusts for, winning here will be secondary. We all know what happens to him when he is consumed by lust.

I saw Maye as a layup, but you're right. Wolf didn't miss the free dunk.

I'm not thrilled with Mayo, but if they brought in a real OC, I think he would become an ok coach.

If one of the three needs to go I would want it to be AVP.

If two need to go I'd prefer Wolf and AVP.

I wouldn't say that. The Patriots defense gave up 10, 23, 24, 30, 14, 41, 32, 22, 20, 3, and 28. Yes there were 3ish bad games for them. They are 17th in ppg. Yeah it's not stellar, but look at the offense. The offense only scored, 16, 20, 3, 13, 10, 21, 16, 25, 17, 19 and 22.

You simply just aren't going to win no matter how good your defense is in the modern NFL if those are the points you are putting up. Then think about how their inability to stay on the field hurts the defense and puts them on their backfoot over and over and over again.

The Pats offense is 31st in ppg. That's horrendous and it throws any chance of winning games out of reach.

If we have an average offense this year, we would have a winning record and be in the playoff hunt. So I can't **** on the defense too much. They are constantly being put at a disadvantage by the offense.

I'm at a loss to understand why people thought the defense would be as good as previous seasons. The Pats replaced a career coach and, one of the greatest defensive minds in NFL history with a rookie HC and DC.

For me, this season was always about hoping Drake Maye would flash elite QB potential. He's done that, so huzzah.

I'm at a loss for why people weren't expecting what we got this year. This was pretty obvious. Very untalented roster, got kinda screwed for free agency when the cap went up, they hit on Maye, but needing a QB severely hampered them in addressing other issues that have persisted for years. First year HC, rookie QB, new coaching staff, a lot of the talent on the team isn't part of the longterm plan.

This was always going to be ground zero. Hitting on Maye was the biggest piece and so far it looks good.

Thats the face of post nut clarity. lol

Yes it's real ****ty when you think about it... if we had stayed Pat no pun: we would have come away with Maye and Ladd McConkey. Trading can seem tempting then it blows up in your face. We were picking close to the Top of each round and came away with absolute Stiffs after Maye that's bad. IF Wolf messes up again in 2025 he needs to be in the Unemployment line abysmal.
Wolf should be gone before we head into the 2025 off season. We cannot afford the 2025 off season to be like 2024 (or a few season prior). Maye needs too much help and we have minimal talent everywhere.

During the offseason, online reports and posts (not just on this forum) often described the Patriots defense as "elite" and/or "championship quality". I questioned that and would receive the horns so to speak. Now I shake my head...
Me too! I've said before last off season that they were too old in most positions, not talented enough in most positions (especially depth), and I couldn't understand why people thought that they were going to be anywhere near as good a defense as people were saying they would be.

Its the perfect storm this year for this defense to be just simply bad. You cant overcome but so many negatives and expect positive results.

.......
No Pass Rush (White has the physicals but lacks talent, he has one move, bull rush and try to win going outside and loses containment often)
Poor coaching (worth mentioning twice)

I feel like all those things I see as negatives are too much to overcome and at this point I think the defense is the weakest unit on the Pats. My oh my how far we have come since training camp.
possibly another instance of Poor Coaching
