They tried throwing money at Caley and he turned it down. It takes two to tango. Sometimes money isn't enough. The Pats have one of, if not, the worst roster in the league. And they have a rookie head coach and as such one with no track record.
Not talking about nick caley. He was another one with zero experience in the OC role.

We're 4 games in and they're 1-3, about where we expected. There have certainly been some growing pains to be sure but did you really expect it to somehow be a 'pretty' 1-3? They're sporting a new coaching staff and revamped front office with an undermanned roster. They're doing it after the single biggest jump the cap has seen since its inception upended Free Agency.

C'mon man, this thread could have been started by Fred, Sam or Andy
That is a fair criticism Maust.

The issue has permeated every thread on this board. I am a willing target of criticism for starting this thread if it helps the others from being derailed.

Yeah and speaking of caley he turned turned a nice contract for a OC with no experience. I was watching games with names McDaniels was saying how when he first started out bill was paying him, ziegler and caserio 10K a year..

Weird reply. The question was « why did we choose » and I responded what I thought was the answer. We differ.

Clearly - one day soon - I hope Maye develops, improves, and makes Foxborough a destination again.
You made the excuse that we didn’t choose the coaching staff, draft choices or usage of $100,000,000 because we are tainted and can’t be competitive. Why would that change? Does the ugly guy get better looking?

How can we become a destination if we are relegated to picking scraps? (Your contention which I dispute)

I think I mentioned it - but : if Maye becomes a player, FAs will want to come back to NE. In other cities (DC, Buffalo, Cincy…), the fortunes changes with the emergence of a QB. If that situation improves, and draft picks pan out, players will come to the North and perhaps things get turned around.

That is my hope. Not saying it’s a promise.

It’s not “they are 1-3, what did you expect”. It’s they haven’t made any improvement whatsoever. It’s hard for a 4-13 team to digress, especially one with 100,000,000 to spend but they have.

Really if you said WOLF instead of MAYO it would be more appropriate because Mayo didn’t make the personnel decisions that resulted in deterioration.

Its difficult to compare a Belichick coaching staff bringing in a rookie OC/DC or OC/DC without a title because of his vast institutional knowledge. He has a life times worth of experience he can draw from to help round out game plans and help correct any perceived flaws in the game plans.

Mayo doesn't have that depth of knowledge. He might have been a player for a long time, but playing isn't coaching. That's not an equivalent experience. Playing doesn't prepare you to run an entire organization.

Washington was in exactly the same boat we were.
Why were they able to get a good OC and free agents and we weren’t? Tennessee signed a ton of players

Buffalo was competitive before Allen and neither Buffalo or Cincy had a major uptick in free agent signings after thise QBs arrived.

Players won’t sign with a bad team is an old wives take that doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. At best they are a few top players who are choosy about going to a winner. We refused to even pursue dozens of mid range free agents that are much better than the players we went with, and are suffering with playing bad players in order for Kraft to keep the money in the bank.
$40,000,000 of cap space, even with minimal up front money in contracts is over $100,000,000 cash in krafts pocket.

But hey, let’s be patient

I agree with that. Bill had been doing it as a coach or assistant since age 24.. the advantage that Mayo has is that he's been a player and a respected player at that. Just like he can never have bills 50 years of knowledge Bill can never have Mayo's experience as a player.

Even listening to some of the leaders on the team they specifically talk about Mayo's experience in game experiences as a player. I remember ty law saying whenever something wouldn't work that he and Bru would go to Bill and say hey coach..this **** ain't working we are on the field i see this or that, ect. let's do something differently.

Again - I just think we have a different view of the situation. Whereas if there was a toss up in the past, winning NE was always competitive acquiring FAs. In recent years, as NE struggles, they lost out on players such as Ridley.

Maybe we just need to move on. Perhaps you’d like to reply again in order to get the last word and then we can see how this afternoon goes vs Miami.

That's not a coaching advantage though.

It’s amazing how posters acknowledge how bad BB disciples have been, but think Mayo was going to buck the trend for some reason. History is not in Mayo’s side succeeding.

This was an emotional hire by Bobby. Mayo had no businesses being a HC who isn’t known for anything around the league. Almost every coach who gets hired as a HC is known for “something”.

He’s Jim Tomsula 2.0.

Right but it's huge with the players guys said the same things about Ryan's in Houston. So ultimately part of coaching is getting guys to buy in and respect the process that holds alot of weight.. mayo knows how guys bodies feel late in the season.. beat up ect. That is how coughing lost his team by not understanding guys were hurting and knowing when to let up.

Your right. We should have went with Jeff Saturday.

I’ll respond to your misunderstanding of my viewpoint and move on.

I am not comparing them to the dynasty, I’m comparing them to bad teams trying to improve. The dynasty teams never would have gone after Ridley.
This team isn’t “Ridley away”. He’s not what they missed on. They are about a dozen or so players away, between starters, role players and depth.
They didn’t blow free agency because they didn’t get flashy players , they blew it because they didn’t get solid mid level players that eliminate weaknesses and make you competitive.

Instead we end up with the worst ol in the NFL and an increasing high number of defensive players who either shouldn’t be on the field or are starting instead of being a role player.

If the direction is let’s pray the Qb zworks out so we can build a roster with high priced free agents and ignore the solid unspectacular players, role players and sold depth that makes up a wining team we have lost before we started.

I’ll allow you the last word since that seems important to you.

I can appreciate the thought behind that even while I doubt your hope will be anything other than in vain. If nothing else the whole ongoing Kraft vs BB vs Brady thing has taught us the derailments will continue apace. The kids just can't seem to help themselves.

Your right. We should have went with Jeff Saturday.
The only guy you can think of who is worse is an interim HC? That’s telling.
So far they are tied in wins lol.

Did you really think our choice was only Mayo or Saturday?

God cut Mayo some slack, give him a proper chance. He is new and learning, haven't we all had to at times. Yes I know none of us are NFL HC so no need to point it out.

Oh sure he was.. he's experienced isn't that what posters want the experienced HC..
