If matters continue more or less as they are, should the Krafts fire Mayo at season's end?

I was on board with this hire in the beginning, though I had reservations...

The biggest reservation was Mayos lack of experience... He was literally Coaching for 6 seasons before being hired as the Head Coach... Until this year, never called a game, Steve was making the defensive calls... Never coordinated a game... he worked as part of a group who did, but never had that responsibility... He doesn't have the knowledge base to draw a lot from to build a base to work from...

He is too effusive in his dealings with the media... he has continually said things that have been walked back, the two most glaring are "buring some cash" and "Maye out played Brissett"... He has diarrhea of the mouth... tries to hard it seems... It is okay to not answer every single question thrown his way...

The product on the field has been less than stellar... A lot of this is attributed to the talent level of the roster ( thanks Bill {sarcasm Bill let us down in the last 5 (or more?} years} ) ... At the same time, he was anointed early on... even if he wasn't officially appointed immediately, we all knew he was going to be the new Head Coach... Wolf was already there... Work and moves should have begun much sooner than it did... Not enough was done with the roster in the off season... He knew the roster had limitations.... He knew where the Large holes were... Nothing was done about them... "Trying" isn't doing...

And part two of the "product on the field" has been less than stellar is not on Bill... This team has been just plain bad a fundamental football... The offensive line has been atrocious... Like holy **** we are bad atrocious... this extends to other areas like assignments and basics like tackling... This might not be true, but at times it feels like they miss more tackles than a pee wee football team... Maybe thats just me... Probably thats just me... But eh, maybe someone else sees this... Is it on his staff? most assuredly... If there is a deficiency, its on the coaches to fix it...

The adage "Players win games coaches lose them" is coming to fruition in new england... Maybe it will turn around... maybe it starts with the benching of Stevenson, with the coaching staff finally bring some accountability to bear... we'll see...

there are more things to say... kinda need to take a minute or ten or more to think them thru before writing them down... At this point I am seriously questioning if Jerod Mayo is up to the task, is capable of rebuilding the Patriots.

Thank god another Mayo thread
Z man, everything seems to be funneling to Mayo across the board... so why not... but i understand the exasperation

so maybe a central place to talk about it, without it derailing every other thread?

They are playing Brissett and the youngsters. That was the plan, still is the plan for 2024. Mayo is doing exactly what he said he was going to do. The record is what we thought it would be.

Can’t fault the guy for injuries.

strength and conditioning plays a part, no?

I'm getting sick of all the Mayo nays. The guy just began trying to right a sinking ship and it's going to take time.

Congrats to Steve Belichick and the Washington Huskies for defeating scUM. Both he and UW head coach Jedd Fisch will be back in the nfl sooner or later.

It occurred to me that the University of Washington has a better top trio of coaches—hc, dc, oc— than some nfl teams. Like the Patriots.

They were kinda bad at the fundamentals for 2 seasons prior to this one tho…

I’m in the middle on Mayo right now…he is a rookie HC with limited experience and he looks every bit the part. On the field and dealing with the media. Time will tell if he’s the guy or not.

Get why he isn't, but SB should be our DC

Id be surprised if he doesn’t get another shot somewhere in the league

Agreed - with his old man's connections and long record of success (and the tutoring that resulted from that), there is really no doubt that SB will be back in the league...

The Pats 3rd down defense is 31st in the league, last year we were 7th. Mayo and Covington are supposed to be defensive masterminds, Mayo hand picked Covington, the coaches were handed a top 10 defense with enough cap space to sign anyone they wanted. The defense is heading in the wrong direction.

The excuse this year is injuries. There are injuries every year.

At this point it is personnel decisions and coaching that have tanked our defense. Of course there are posters that are "tired" of talking about the coaching failures, but the incompetent coaching is on display every Sunday.

This is not being negative, it is being honest. The coaches are supposed to be defensive experts and had enough cap space to sign any player they wanted. The defense is going backwards. That is on Mayo and Covington. Godchaux is complaining about the lack of discipline and performance which is coaching.

At this point Mayo and Covington are failing. Let's hope they can turn it around.

so it won't take a Miracle to Whip them into a competitive team, just time?

This. Why are we being like an ostrich ignoring coaching failures .

I think fans are calling out ineptitude in coaching primarily on offense and an increasing pattern on defense which shows with the product on field. Even in Patricia years we did not lose this bad.

We were competitive. Now we are getting steamrolled. That is just not on players. That's on conditioning , coaching and personnel attitude. If there is no improvement on these and the product on display how can you waste another year on mayo.

He needs to walk the talk and start showing some improvement of the product on field . Losses are okay, annihilation is not.

Or the defense wasn’t nearly as good last year as people think they were. I can’t take a “top 10” ranking seriously when there’s a 72-3 annihilation over 2 games in there plus a schedule featuring Trevor Siemian, Zach Wilson, Minshew, Devito at QB for the other team.

I think they were a product of schedule more than anything else.

So the excuse is not injuries? Now the excuse is pivoting to "the schedule"?

Real men don't make excuses.

Excuse? I’m talking about last year. That defense was overrated by a lot of Pats fans, like the boogeymen defense was.

They weren’t that good and that carried over to this season against a harder schedule.
