Sitting players who are better than other players in their position group is a really bad idea too.

And it’s really only the QB position where that happens because they have to be able to run the entire offense, whereas everyone else just has to know their particular assignment.

Perfectly said! I've felt that his toeing the line of "collaboration " and trying to stay on board with the teams messaging. However as yout stated he is the HC... I believe he relies heavily on imput from his staff notably the HC of the offense he proclaimed in AVP. I've pretty much given up on seeing maye save for mop up duties when we get blown out again.

I've accepted that Jacoby is going to continue to hurt our eyes each week. As in most organizations doesn't the HC have say on who plays? Starts ? Ect. ?

Agree. I just don't know what does mayo do now that AVP runs offense , Covington runs defense while mayo just seems to be hands off media facing coach.

You look at shanahan , you know he is running offense, dan Quinn defense , Reid offensive game plan. Mayo not too sure.

Dan Campbell has a persona and Rockstar in Ben Johnson.

If Ben Johnson becomes available next year, will they dump on Mayo if Johnson is willing to come here ??

The idea of letting a young QB sit and learn behind a veteran is one the Packers used for years when Ron Wolf was the GM, and they have had the most consistent successions at Qb as a result. Favre to Rodgers, and now Rodgers to Love.Ron Wokf was a HOF GM, and that’s where Eliot Wolf started out when he was just a kid. So when the Patriots took Maye with the 3rd pick there was a lot of thought that they would use the Green Bay model and sit him for a season before playing him, and Brissett was signed to be a bridge QB while the young QB learned the offense. And having a rookie QB learn the offense for a year before playing them isn’t only a Green Bay philosophy, as both Brady and Mahomes sat for a season before embarking on their starting careers, and it worked out pretty well for both.
The only challenge I see is in the quest to protect maye they are destroying growth and careers of entire offense and indirectly defense . In the end everyone needs that big contract to save for the future.

When this business decision of pats impacts their growth or earnings , donno what do you expect out of players. Because of contract situation, you cannot even head out of the team unlike a regular job where you can apply elsewhere.its bonded labour with no ability to control your future.

Agreed and you make interesting points. I believe mayos safe and he has plenty of rope. I believe wolf and AVP would be touched before mayo would. Until Drake takes over Mayo's the face of the organization. I believe mayo tells his staff what he wants and what he expects and allows his coordinators to run the units.

Covington would leave if he ever felt his job was in danger. Mayos still making his way as a coach.. adversity is what defines character.. he's lost the Last 3 games in the fashion that he has so alot has come into question wich is expected. For at least this season I believe AVP job is safe. Now when Drake takes over and if the offense is still terrible then I think a change will be made.

The Packers model is completely relevant given that Wolf learned about how to be a GM from his father, who employed that model in Green Bay.
Ivan when was Ron Wolf the gm in green bay?
1991-2000

Which rookie quarterback did he sit? None. In fact he traded for Favre.who started his very first season in Green Bay.

So, when someone tells you "he learned this from his father" you will know they are full of **** because it did not happen.

I am not keen for a change either . But just laying it out based on what has transpired so far - Mayo does not seem to have established any positive pattern yet. On the field and off the field the noise is too much and that too ina negative fashion.

So in a way Mayo needs to reinvent, reassert himself and set some achievable goals which includes player and personnel development. If that fails , I donno how you can give another year to Mayo and AVP.

Because at that point it looks like a sunk cost . The arrow needs to point up towards end of season . it's still early days, but Mayo would need to sprint now and set some targets for himself, coaches and the team. He has just been lazy walking so far . Mayo is touted as a players coach. He needs to get them to perform as a unit and make the team performance exceed individual sum of parts

Winning Sunday would go along way to doing such. Becuase we know next week is a blow out at home against Houston. Mayo's is a precarious position because he's the HC however part of a collaborative relationship with wolf, groh. In believe that players believe in mayo and have said nothing but glowing things about him. I don't think the decision to keep playing Brissett is his alone.. I firmly believe this. He will say otherwise the media but we know that he knows Jacoby is a good guy but not a good QB.

In a New York minute.

I'll keep saying it.. many coaches will not want to agree to the " collaborative " approach like mayo has. That is likely another factor why Caley didn't take the OC job.

Get off the "collaborative" approach train... It's what happens on every team. It's not new, it's not unique and it has been done before.

The more you say it, the way you say it makes me think jerod Mayo is a ****y

Welp, that confirms a prior report by the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that Wolf will “will be in charge of the personnel department, with control of the 53-man roster.” Sure sounds like a GM to us. That corroborates Mike Reiss saying weeks back that Wolf is operating like a GM without the title.
Dude, old news

He runs the personnel department. Guess what they do? Sign players.

Guess what they don't do?
Set the starting line up.

I swear, the more I read from certain guys, the more certain I am some lack the basic understanding of how a football team works.

Mayos safe... ben Johnson will have better options.
That's not what toofy asked... Would I toss mayo out like a bucket of dirty water for Ben Johnson?. Yes. Would not even think twice about it.

I’m well aware of how football works, and I’m well aware that coaches set the line ups, but I’m also aware that there are always exceptions, and your #3 pick who is slated to be your long term QB can be that exception, especially when the team is in the kind of disarray it is right now. As Reiss said Wolf is the de facto GM, and he certainly has input on this issue.

So you are criticizing others takes, but what real fan 02’ says makes you think Mayo is a ****y? I didn’t realize message board fans had that kind of clout?

I see.. well if a coach has the offense Detroit has he should be a wanted coach. He'd look no different here under the circumstances. In many ways they are lucky to have mayo.

Not according to Wolf it isn’t. This is what he said about it:

The Patriots' Eliot Wolf, who recently was named the club's executive vice president of player personnel, said the approach to deciding Maye's readiness will be a collaborative one, which figures to include Mayo.

The article does not say what you claim about Maye. What's up with that?

If that is truly how jerod Mayo works he needs to be fired.

He will never be a winning coach.
