Report: Patriots working to trade Matt Judon to Atlanta (Update: Deal is done)

This team isn't winning a Superbowl in the next 3 years.

That's not a concession. That's a fact. That doesn't mean you don't start making progress towards your goals.

I can't think of anyone other than Patrick who's won a Superbowl with their QB in their rookie contract since maybe big Ben.
Three years is a very long time in the NYFL, but this team on offense is as bad as any I can remember.

Bill Belichick
It's too bad because he did a lot of great things here.

How ironic is it that Bill's favorite strategy with players was better too early than too late but Kraft went the other way with Bill?

I think the base (nickel) defensive front will be:

DE White / Wise
DT Pharms / Ekuale / Hill
NT Godchaux / Purcell / Watts
EDGE/OLB Jennings / Uche / OX
ILB1 Bentley / McMillan / Giles-Harris
ILB2 Tavai / Elliss

In obvious passing situations, they'll kick wise in to DT and one of the DTs down to NT with Uche also coming in for Jennings.

Mapu might fit in as well at LB. Bentley has been the playcaller but I wonder if they eventually move that role over Tavai as it seems he's closer to a 3-down player.

It will be interesting to see what happens in Atlanta if the Falcons and Judon can’t agree on a new contract. How will Judon handle it.
Wouldn't they have already agreed before the trade?

In retrospect, cutting Lawyer was a logical (but painful) decision.
In today’s game, though, we could have a safety trio of Lawyer, Rodney, and Eugene Wilson. Adding Law and Poole at CB, and that would be the most insane secondary I’d ever seen. As it was in real life though, that 2003 defense was still the best Patriots defense I’ve ever seen. It just makes me laugh that the way the game has evolved, keeping Lawyer and going down a heavy up front would have been the logical move and the defense would still have been the best in the league for its era.

This offense is historically bad. How the hell did it get to this point?
I love BB but the state of this offence is all on him.
1. Bad drafting on O
2. Bad contracts on O
3. Bad coaching on O

I really don't know what happend to Bill but he blew it the last 3 years of his tenure. We are at the bottom of the league because of his inept management. End of story!

Even the most ardent supporters of BB (like me) will agree his job performance these past 2 years was poor.

Drafting, talent development, hiring coaches, game mgt, clock mgt all went with his ex GFs fake boobs.

Not necessarily. All depends on the communication. Pats could have just told Judon hes traded and that's it. At that point it was up to him if he decided to go Gronk (threaten to retire and not report) or just accept it. What also is possible is ATL told him they would consider it which is a change than the NEP position.

Per PFT they don't have a signed deal in place:

Best guess, they have probably got a mutually agreed upon value in place and need to create the cap room to accomodate it. As it stands right now Judon's existing contract would put them well over the cap. That bagel needs to be finagled.

It seemed to me that all of his "brain trust" guys left. He's always been pretty rigid about his staff, coaching and personnel. He wants things done his way and he's always gone with guys he has history with or who learned everything they know from him. As he got older, felt like there just weren't enough people anymore to surround himself with who he trusted. The whole castle around him was crumbling and he can't do it all himself. He was too stubborn to go make outside hires when they didn't have anyone ready internally so he stuck with "his guys" in miscast roles.

I think the year off for him will be good to observe more freely how different teams do things. He's such a legend that any coach would likely be happy to break bread with him and not only pick his brain, but let him pick theirs. If he comes back next year, hopefully for his sakes its with some fresh perspective and willingness to build a staff of some fresher minds. He can still bring his leadership and team management style, but he has to be willing to accept new ideas.

It's easy to see how he could reject that in NE. He's such a legend, so established, and its frankly hard to teach an old dog new tricks. I think this year will be very humbling to him, not in terms of devaluing what he's done in the past but in terms of accepting that he needs to change some things up if he still wants to have success and keep going at this coaching thing.

Judon lost his leverage at this point. It all comes down to where he wants to play - ATL or NE. He's going to have no choice, but play on the $6.5M.

He should've had representation.

He did. Has the same agent as Barmore - Klutch Sports

The coaching dysfunction too. The MP and JJ fiasco goes without saying. O'Brien showing his displeasure with the staff he was given. Klemm publicly fighting with another coach and then leaving. Bill completely stopped talking to his starting QB after benching him. Things I would have never expected to happen here under his watch.

That was "hiring coaches"

Lol I was so pissed.
Especially the next Sunday, when the Pat's asses were royally kicked, 31-0 Season turned out okay, though Lawyer was really good, Rodney ought to be in Canton, imo.

Lawyer hit a patch in his career in 2002 in which he didn't have a sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery a tackle for a loss or an INT.

He didn't do himself any favors at the negotiating table

Posters were saying he was representing himself. Klutch botched this trade and the Falcons can rescind it if Judon doesn’t cooperate.
