Report: Patriots working to trade Matt Judon to Atlanta (Update: Deal is done)

"Matthew Judon, the newly acquired Atlanta Falcons star pass rusher, will be playing without a contract for next season, at least for the time being.

By choice, according to him.

In his first news conference Monday, the edge rusher said he does not believe he has earned an extension yet with his new team."

If Chicago finishes with a worse record than Atlanta does, then Eliot Wolf should be ****ing Fired.

I ****ing HATE that ****ing ****.
I mean whoever got Judon was going to improve somewhat. So it doesn't really matter a whole ton. Also sometimes it is better to let players in the league know you will do right by them if all things are equal.

Jeez. The Falcons or the Bears... that's a real coin flip of who is going to be worse. I can make the case for either team.

Interesting in that Judon chose Atlanta with no cap space vs Chicago with $24M available. In doing so he may have painted himself into a corner

Can't say what about who will be worse but what's certain is Chicago has cap space, Atlanta can't quite accomodate Judon's current contract. Obviously adjustments will be made to allow for it but da Bears could've thrown him some additional cheddar right off the bat.

That's not going to happen.

Chicago wanted Judon to agree to extension or no deal. Obviously Judon didn't want what they were offering. Off to Atlanta he went.

I don't know Cap't that's a bit harsh. Getting two teams to agree on a 3rd round pick for a 32 year old Edge coming off season ending surgery seems pretty solid in my book.

And I'm in the let's see what happens crowd with Mayo and Wolf. Definitely not sold on this duo.

Judon clearly wanted out.

He didn't have to relocate to play for the same contract. We weren't going to cut him. I guess that he really thinks that he will have a better year playing for ATL than playing for us.

No question he wanted out.

He is on record as telling Mayo/FO, "you might as well just trade me". Since he made it clear to mgt during his presser what he "would accept", there was no need for the NEP to respond.

I don't think that is a fair assumption. He seems to have liked his time here and wanted to stay.

This was clearly about wanting to get paid.

It appears he overplayed his hand and forced a trade even without the new money.

Breer's hit job on Judon this morning is unfortunate. I don't think Breer is spinning but someone inside the Patriots keeps feeding these stories and it makes the franchise look bad. Move on. Because the reader is going to suspect this is more excuse-making coming from the front office than it is a Judon problem. There's too much backstabbing and CYA going on with the Patriots over the last few years, and it's not a good look. It certainly wouldn't attract new players.

Of course, players and staff may think this is how the place operates, from the very top all the way down.

It’s Red Sox level bullcrap, same energy as the anti BB documentary. The somewhat old fashioned terminology reported by Breer to have been used regarding Judon is similar to what I’ve heard from a particular old fashioned high ranking member of the organization.

Calling it now…after a stellar year in ATL, they still do not extend him. He comes back here on a “prove it again” deal…. /s

Leaking that to trash the player on the way out the door is bad enough but the implication that our best player was traded because of his twitter comments is insane. I have not heard anything yet that makes me feel good about the new culture.
