Report: Patriots working to trade Matt Judon to Atlanta (Update: Deal is done)

Now it's a real rebuild not the faux one over the last few years. This process should have started the day Brady left and we might have a contender right now.
Agree. I believe they will be much better on offense this season. It's all about the growth of Drake and all the rookies. I don't think they will be the embarrassment they were last season. Even in losses I believe they will be much more competitive. I've already resigned to this before judon was traded. This is a move that Bill we know would have made.

Not decades they won after their rookie deals too. I said more than half the SBs won this century were won by players who were capable of doing it on their rookie deals. Point being don't punt on 3 seasons like you stated.

How do you suppose they compete in the next 3 years when they have a 21 year old QB, they don't have a 1 or 2 wr, their TE is probably mid at best, they have ZERO NFL caliber offensive lineman, a rookie defensive minded coach and overpaid RB.

Judon fixes all those problems?

And the Pats defense even with Judon could not handle good offenses very well, this wasn't a problem that started in 2023.

Even with judon and Baramore healthy, this team was looking at around 5 or 6 wins at best.

This season is not going to be competitive. Next season you could realistically expect that it would be better than this season and by year 3 you should be a playoff team.

And if Maye is the guy, you could even be a Superbowl team.

Unfortunately Bill left us in a really bad spot. He ran it into the ground. It's not going to be easy to fix and it's going to take a real amount of time.

That third round player, if they hit on it will provide this team a lot more value than Judon ever could in the next 3 seasons.

The former homer brigade turning into the mope squad is the most laughably transparent thing I have seen on here in a while. The same posters who told anyone that criticized any decision the organization (Bill) made the last few years to "go root for another team" are now critical of every single step the new regime has made.
I take great offense to the use of former.

And I highly disagree with moping. Plenty of us have been discussing what's going on in camp and are excited for this upcoming season.

My takes on this season have been very optimistic. I'm allowed not to like a move and still be a homer.

Some other posters are ready to punt the next 3 seasons so who is really the mope squad?

It will be interesting to see what happens in Atlanta if the Falcons and Judon can’t agree on a new contract. How will Judon handle it.

Ok how was peppers career going before he came to us.. X already said this defense is best for him and covington puts him in position to utilize his strength. I like what he brings and he will have ample playing time.
"X" love the nickname for him.

They're definitely not the guys.
We don't know that. None of them have coached/played a single game yet.

And frankly as much as people don't want to admit it, the issues with this team have FAR MORE to do with the last regime than the current one. If Mayo wasn't the coach, this season's outlook wouldn't be much different. They would have still ended up drafting Maye. They pretty much had to after they benched Mac for good. I guess they could have got McCarthy instead who wouldn't play this year regardless.

Does a 3rd round pick next year fix all those problems? What's the likelihood it even fixes one of those problems (less than %20 chance).

And Not having Judon just creates another problem to fix that next year's 3 isn't likely to fix either.

Dont understand the sulking at this point . Judon was not going to be here next year and we would not have got a compensatory pick . By getting a 3rd rounder we also get opportunity to play young guyz and see how they perform. There is an opportunity cost for extended preseason and this lost year is the price we need to pay. If the rookies and younger players develop that's a huge plus. Think of lions, Texans. They were in a similar situation.

I believe kraft is a smart business man and understands that brand equity is tied to winning and will not be always cheap. The money will be spent when we need . We will rollover this 50 million over next year and who knows we sign 2-3 pro bowlers .

You need to lose some battles to win the big prize.

As for why we did not draft tackles higher, maybe we did not agree with the collective valuation that others saw.

Polk is coming along real well, baker could be a x factor and Wallace and Robinson will be decent depth pieces .

Sow will offset loss of strange .

If maye starts to come around towards end of season we start to compete as early as next year . QB purgatory is something that we don't want to be in.

Let us roll in for first 6 games and see which players need to be part of future. Unlike other teams , we are lucky we have 17 preseason games for 2025.

Just treat this season as extended preseason and it should be good for our sanity as well as heart and health.

The steelers needed to rebuild after Big Ben retired. To their credit they did not tank like the Patriots clearly are this year.
The Steelers were never in a position where the team was as devoid of talent as the Pats were the last few years. That's the difference. The offense was a problem 5 years ago. That didn't start last year. The defense had pieces that kept the team middle of the pack in the AFC for a bit along with some good coaching.

The truth is the Pats had 2 options post Brady

1. Get very aggressive on acquiring offensive talent including big trades and overspending. They didn't want to and settled for the second and third best players on the market to avoid bidding wars and trades and then everyone jerked off to how savvy they were. The amount of times we passed up on a WR and half the fanbase went "he's not worth that" and then sat on their thumbs while we didn't have talent there is hilarious.

2. Actually commit to a hard rebuild starting in 2020 when we didn't have a real answer at QB and were screwed that year anyways.

They did neither and picked the worst move of patchworking their way to trying to be good enough with okayish acquistions that might be enough to sell to the fans but then never really helped move the needle. Then it finally caught up with them last year.

The Steelers at the very least were willing to go out and get talent and be aggressive post Ben. It didn't work, but they weren't passive so the team didn't just rot out like us.

If you're a homer and have been a homer than honestly more power to you and I can respect that homerism especially now with the team at a low point. The "homers" I am speaking on are the ones who chastised anyone who didn't agree with something Bill did and loved to tell people to go root for another team if we didn't like something. Now those same posters are criticizing any and every move the new regime makes because they're mad Bill got canned. Their loyalty is to Bill and not to the New England Patriots so their years of hypocrisy are just embarrassing at this point. They're pretty close to openly rooting for the new regime to fail.

The difference between a Team committed to winning *Atlanta* and one who ain't * the Patriots*. Atlanta could take that Division pretty easily they have some nice pieces.

I believe he would have signed a 3 year deal.

To those who think "we aren't going to contend, why bother?" I say teams need to start somewhere. Judon is an upper tier player who not only would make the defense better (and would hopefully serve as a mentor to younger players) but takes some pressure off the offense to score every time they have the ball. When Maye likely starts next year he's going to need help on both sides of the ball to be successful.

The Pats had the $$$ to spend. No other FAs are walking through the door. No one wants to play here right now. The message is being sent very clearly that this team has zero interest in winning in the near future. All else being equal, if I'm a FA I'll take the same or less money to play somewhere else.

This team is praying that Drake Maye proves to be a lights out slam dunk pick. If he isn't, there doesn't appear to be any plan in place to build something here right now. Obviously no one knows what's happening behind closed doors but right now it doesn't look good.

We are spoiled by decades of the belief that anything other than a Superbowl winning season is a failure.

The thing that really pisses me off about this surrender is that it removes the possibility of serendipity. What if it turns out Maye is actually ready and is really good this year? And the idiot front office or coaching somehow fixes the OL? But we just threw in the towel and damaged the defense by shipping our best player off for whatever the present value of a 3rd round pick is.

It's contemptible that the front office is apparently forfeiting the season. Makes their jobs safe for now by setting the lowest possible bar.

Kraft is a clown, has always been a clown and this is his show now. Enjoy the suck.

A third round pick has a 10 plus year career. Judah has two or three years left. And in case you haven't noticed that doesn't line up with where we're going to be. You don't even have to take my word for it, take the Patriots word for it. If they thought otherwise they wouldn't have traded him.

Ben, Eli, Flacco and Mahomes all won on their rookie deals. Wentz would have been on a rookie deal as well, he got injured and a dirt cheap back up won instead. So that's 5. Rodgers wasn't tecnically on a rookie deal, but he won within 3 years of being a starter. Brees, Brady and Manning were the big exceptions

Exactly. They will not be in contention for a SB this year. So 50% to 33% of whatever Judon has left is already irrelevant for us. You are basically hoping every single thing goes right for next season or the season after that and that Judon doesn't fall off by them.

It was just a dumb bet for us.

Patriots don’t feel like they can compete in the AFC and I agree.
No superstars at WR no O line.
Equals last in the division maybe the conference.
This year is all about getting Maye ready and collecting assets.
This is why I don’t think Bourne, Jones, Wise are necessarily safe,
I think it depends if Wolf has final say in the roster or Mayo has equal or more power.

This is realism vs delusion. The truth is the Pats have so many holes that the odds of everything you say happening and panning out enough to actually give them a shot at a Super Bowl are the same odds that they could do it without Judon because it's that far fetched.

You can either take a real look at where the team is and actually put them in the best position to make things better for the future, or you can be one of the teams that is stuck in mediocrity for years because they are afraid of ripping the bandaid off and upsetting some fans who need to hold on to false hope.

Hard to think I might not be looking forward to Sundays now thanks Patriots brass. On the bright side we won't have many primes time games so an old geezer like me can get to bed on time. No 2-15 Team should keep anybody up.
